Kotomitsuki won tournament

Recommended Posts

36 sekitori participated in a tournament on Sunday. Takanohana withdrew without fighting causing a huge sigh amongst 5500 spectator in Nagoya. He is eager to have a good solid basho in Kyushu but evidently is still tired or continues his own ways of preparation.

Kotomitsuki was strong winning the tournament. He beat Asashoryu and Miyabiyama on his way to collecting the 200 000 yen prize money.

200.000 yen? This are barely 2.000 Euro, so I checked the source. The prize money is given as "200 man en". "Man" is the normal Japanese unit for larger numbers as "thousand" is for Westerners. But the twist is that "man" isn't thousand but ten thousand... so the prize money was 2.000.000 yen.

Btw, thanks a lot for your reports and the links to the sources; it is just amazing how many of the kanji are recognizable now for me, one year after beginning from the scratch. Try it, totally new horizons are opening this way. :-) Just be warned, it will twist your brain crenellations into unforeseen structures. :-)

Thanks to both of you for these infos.

I've just understood at last why the contenders in "Sports Bakka", the Japanese crazy game we can watch dayly on DSF via Astra satellite, when they win 1,000,000 yens, we watch the score of 100 something on our screen ! So "100 man en" is 1,000,000 yens ! Well, I will sleep more intelligent tonight ... And congratulations to Kotomitsuki, and for Takanohana, I hope he will be present at Fukuoka ... Everything is possible, from now on, with him ...

(Assuming I haven't isunderstood the less-than-perfect tranlation programs out there:)

And Iwakiyama won the Juryo contest... Again... It should be interesting to watch his Makunouchi debut.

And it seems Takanohana lost to Takanowaka... Again... Should be interesting to see them both come Kyushu...

Assuming my use of babelvista is correct, I understand that Senshuyama won the Juryo contest.

This is what was posted to the SML about the above mentioned tournament (and about Takanohana's participation).

Local favorite Kotomitsuki won his first Ozumo Ooza

Ketteisen ("King of the Ozumo Championship")

championship held at the Nagoya Sogo Taiikukan on

October 6.  Kotomitsuki picked up the 2 Million Yen

prize.

Kotomitsuki defeated Takanowaka to win his Block and

then proceeded to win against the other two Block

winners, Asashoryu and Miyabiyama.

Yokozuna Takanohana participated in the championship

for the first time in four years and promptly was

beaten by Takanowaka in the first round.   Prior to

the championship Takanohana said he was hoping to

repeat his performance four years ago when  he won it.

"I feel great.  This place is big and I really feel

it's worthwhile to go out there and do the best I

can," said Takanohana.

However after his loss, his tsukebitos quickly

surrounded him telling reporters he would not be

answering any more questions today.  He left without

making any further comment.

====================

Very interesting....
