Natsu 2025 videos: lower-division yusho races (+ discussion) and other selected matches

I've decided to hijack my own video threads in order to amalgamate all the lower-division yusho race content, rather than having the videos here and the discussion (if any) in the Promotion/Demotion thread after it goes up.

Starting off with the situation after round three / Day 6 (no videos for this, but here are the results):

3-0 Jk16w Ikazuchishu (Ikazuchi)
3-0 Jk17w Ikazuchiarata (Ikazuchi)

For those not scoring at home, that's 64 unbeaten rikishi at this stage of the tournament, which in theory could have played right down to four 7-0 rikishi. The torikumi rarely works out that neatly, of course, and in this case it started off with Otsuji taking a scheduled turn up in juryo despite his 3-0 record, leaving lowest-ranked Ikazuchiarata to face a 2-1 opponent. So, it was going to be either 31, 32 or 33 rikishi in the next update after round four. Other than that: No necessary deviations, all rikishi were paired with an opponent ranked right next to them in the list.

4-0 Jd91e Kyokuhayate (Oshima)
4-0 Jd101w Satsumasho (Oitekaze)

4-0 Jk7e Kazuma (Kise)
4-0 Jk16e Kazeoka (Oshiogawa)

So it's the neat total of 32 rikishi at 4-0 after all, thanks to Otsuji winning in juryo and Ikazuchiarata losing to fellow rookie 2-1 Matsuda. And with even numbers for each division, too, so the Day 9 schedule does not feature any cross-division match-ups.

Fairly limited same-stable presence in each respective race: Fujishima has two rikishi in makushita, and Sakaigawa and Shikoroyama each have two in jonidan, but in all cases spaced along the list such that the rounds five and six matches are not affected by it.

We've got our 16 rikishi who stand just two wins away from a zensho yusho (or at least a playoff, as the case may be). For the makushita developments, I'll refer you to Reonito's summary over at Tachiai.org.

In sandanme we've got a pretty eclectic group of leaders, the most exciting one among them being Yonezawaryu. The 20-year-old youngster who came in with extensive judo but no sumo experience a year ago had a makushita debut last basho that was a bit of a struggle, but he's bouncing back in style this month and has at minimum secured a direct return to the third division already. Two other young-ish rikishi have joined him in 22-year-old Kotohaguro who was already as high as mid-makushita but lost his way a bit over the last year and a half, and 21-year-old Kyokumizuno who has been mostly bouncing around the middle of sandanme since he made his debut in the division two years back. The other contenders are jonidan/sandanme elevator Yamenosato and often-injured collegiate veteran Hatooka.

Jonidan has a major favourite in freshly returned Mineyaiba, who was a steady presence in the makushita-joi before an injury took him out of the last three tournaments. Nevertheless, two other contestants may be skilled enough to take him out if given the chance: Kobayashi is a 21-year-old who debuted two years ago and smoothly went all the way to high sandanme before injuries befell him as well, and Tenrosei is a promising 18-year-old Mongolian rookie who certainly is better than his current mid-jonidan position suggests. (Although I have to say I've not been all that impressed compared to the hype he had coming in six months back...) This field is rounded out by Zuitenryu, 19 years old and already with four appearances in sandanme (all MK though), 20-year-old Boshuyama who has yet to go beyond jonidan, and 25-year-old Satsumasho, one of the lesser collegiate wrestlers to ever have turned professional.

Last not least, jonokuchi is down to a single undefeated contender, and it's the one probably the vast majority of fans would have predicted at the start of the basho: Kazuma, the powerful makushita tsukedashi starter from last year who got injured in his debut in a bout that he had entered with a 4-0 record.

The Day 11 schedule isn't out at this time, but there doesn't appear to be anything stopping the committee from just doing the eight straight pairings, which would mean Mineyaiba and Kazuma fighting one division up, and being strong favourites at that, too. That would mean 2/2/3/1 unbeaten rikishi after round six, who theoretically could play down to four 7-0's, but some rank differences might make that infeasible - Kazuma vs Boshuyama could be a justifiable pairing for the lowest match, Kazuma vs Tenrosei probably not. But maybe there's a curve ball coming on Day 11 that shakes up the whole race anyway.

A further potential complication: While the double Fujishima representation in makushita ended today, we still have all Sakaigawa and Shikoroyama rikishi in the jonidan race. Particularly Shikoroyama's Mineyaiba and Tenrosei look like a big threat to both be 6-0 in a couple of days.

Nice to see Kazuma on his way back after his promising debut got cut short by that horrific injury.

No real surprises in yesterday's matches, every match bar Tenrosei - Boshuyama was won by the rikishi with significantly higher-rank experience, although I suppose Fukuzaki - Gyotoku was a bit of a black box as neither guy has much of a professional track record yet.

As expected they haven't made the Tenrosei - Kazuma pairing for the finals, so there will be two 5-1 guests in the bracket. Tenrosei will take on Jd44w Takano, a 24-year-old with some sandanme experience but none in the last year, and may face stablemate Mineyaiba in a playoff if they're both successful (although I wouldn't rule out Kobayashi spoiling the party). The Kazuma procession culminates against Jd98e Masarufuji - the 17-year-old had made some good progress towards upper jonidan last year, but bounced off hard in recent months with at one point 11 consecutive losses. The makushita and sandanme divisions will see straight deciders.

Aww. I was hoping for Kazuma-Imada instead. I don't think the outcome would have changed, but Imada has shown some pretty brutal take-your-head-off nodowa in his bouts that I've seen, so at least it might have been a contest.

Speaking of whom, Imada is the absolutely least judo-looking judoka we've ever seen in sumo, isn't he? Nodowa and tsuppari barrages, dang.

Indeed. Must be in the genes, I had a look at his father's Kyokai profile and tsuppari is given as his specialist technique.

Day 13 Results

Makushita
7-0 Ms3e
Otsuji (Takadagawa)
6-1 Ms39w Fukuzaki (Fujishima)

Sandanme
7-0 Sd16w Hatooka (Kise)
6-1 Sd45w Kotohaguro (Sadogatake)

Jonidan
7-0 Jd21e Mineyaiba (Shikoroyama)
6-1 Jd24w Kobayashi (Kasugano)
7-0 Jd61e Tenrosei (Shikoroyama)

Jonokuchi
7-0 Jk7e
Kazuma (Kise)

No big surprises in these matches, although Otsuji and Mineyaiba had to come through very competitive performances by Fukuzaki and Kobayashi. Hatooka took a bit longer to defeat Kotohaguro, but looked to be in charge of the match the entire time, and the Tenrosei and Kazuma wins were the expected easy affairs. The Shikoroyama duo will be contesting a playoff on senshuraku, the other three championships have been decided.

Kazuma should be the runaway favourite for the jonidan title next time as well. Mineyaiba will certainly be expected to deliver another strong score, too, but a 7-0 will be much less of a foregone conclusion there, and Tenrosei should have his hands full in mid-sandanme if I'm not completely underestimating him. Hatooka...well, good luck at your highest rank in three years.

And for completeness, the jonidan playoff:

Tenrosei gave it a good shot, but his higher-level stablemate Mineyaiba was pretty much in control of the bout from start to finish.

Time for some of that "other selected matches" stuff...

All the Natsu matches by the three freshly minuted makushita tsukedashi:

Gyotoku 6-1
Urayama 4-3
Hanaoka 4-3

The records are linking to their basho results on the DB, the bold-face shikona links are to the video playlists. You will have seen Gyotoku's last four matches already as he was in the makushita yusho race, the other two guys' stuff is "new". Urayama and Hanaoka faced each other in their mutual dohyo debut, the other two pairings weren't realized.

Full coverage of the jonokuchi debutants would be a bit much, but for historical purposes (hey, maybe there's an ozeki or yokozuna in there), here's the playlist with each first official bout for the 32 newbies from Haru's maezumo, listed in bold to set them apart from the handful of non-rookies who happened to be matched up with them. Just like the previous basho, one unfortunate rookie had to wait all the way to Day 4 to make his debut.

Day 1 Jk24e Sawaisamu (0-0) Kazenohana Jk23w
Day 1 Jk22e Futagawa (0-0) Kototerao Jk21w
Day 1 Jk20e Kido (0-0) Ryugi Jk19w
Day 1 Jk18e Asahirai (0-0) Ikazuchiarata Jk17w
Day 1 Jk16e Kazeoka (0-0) Wakahasegawa Jk15w
Day 1 Jk14e Matsuda (0-0) Komanofuji Jk13w
Day 1 Jk12e Asarikimaru (0-0) Yamagishi Jk11w
Day 1 Jk10e Shunta (0-0) Kazeoki Jk9w
Day 2 Jk25e Terui (0-0) Higohikari Jk24w
Day 2 Jk23e Hashimoto (0-0) Sawazaki Jk22w
Day 2 Jk21e Sumiyoshi (0-0) Yamauchi Jk20w
Day 2 Jk19e Teranishi (0-0) Mitsurufuji Jk18w
Day 2 Jk17e Hokutonada (0-0) Ikazuchishu Jk16w
Day 2 Jk15e Umeyama (0-0) Satomatsunaga Jk14w
Day 2 Jk13e Yamanobe (0-0) Imada Jk12w
Day 2 Jk11e Uchima (0-0) Wakajin Jk10w
Day 2 Jk8e Okuniiwa (0-0) Kazekodai Jk9e
Day 4 Jk23e Hashimoto (0-1) (0-0) Usagifuji Jk25w

And at the other end of the career spectrum, 6 of the 11 retiring rikishi were active on the dohyo to the end of Natsu basho, namely these:

Day 13 Jd56w Masuminato (3-3) Najima Jd54w
Day 13 Ms49w Ryusei (4-2) Shiroma Ms44w
Day 14 Jd100w Satonofuji (2-4) Kumanishiki Jd99w
Day 14 Ms40w Noda (3-3) Hayatefuji Ms37w
Day 15 Jk24e Sawaisamu (1-5) (2-4) Usagifuji Jk25w
Day 15 Jd79w Kaitoma (4-2) Asaazuma Jd78w

Promotions!

Two rikishi were announced as returning to juryo.

Ms3e Otsuji 7-0 Y
Ms4w Kotokuzan 5-2

The Otsuji playlist is of course the same as what was already posted in the yusho racers' summary.

Just two rikishi will be making their makushita debuts in Nagoya.

Sd5w Furuta 4-3
Sd39e Fujiizumi 6-1

A more impressively-sized cadre of five rikishi will be reaching sandanme for the first time in July.

Jd15e Tamatensho 4-3
Jd20e Yumenofuji 4-3
Jd22e Okada 5-2
Jd34w Sunasaka 5-2
Jd61e Tenrosei 7-0 D

Tenrosei's set of bouts was also already featured above.

And now finally some random highlight selections. Two notes up front:

I'm removing tsukitaoshi from the list of "rare" kimarite that I include no matter what. It fulfilled my arbitrary criteria of an average under 5 appearances per basho when I started half a year ago, but after Haru basho had already blown way past that number, so did Natsu. Many tsukitaoshi matches weren't all that interesting on their overall merits anyway so it won't be a big loss, and any that do look noteworthy will of course still be included, just not with their kimarite being highlighted.

The other change is that I'm going to note matches that went to mono-ii in the bout descriptions. You'll still have to watch for the actual outcome of the mono-ii, though.

Day 1 Highlights

Jd84e Tokio (0-0) Gokishin Jd84w mono-ii
Jd55e Tsukioka (0-0) Najima Jd54w
Jd49e Takatsukasa (0-0) Kaihakusho Jd48w this clever finish is underrated by its kimarite sukuinage

Jd36e Tochihayate (0-0) Yoshiazuma Jd36w mono-ii

Sd34e Chiyonokatsu (0-0) Koki Sd33w
Sd27e Chiyoyamato (0-0) Daishoki Sd27w
Sd23e Soma (0-0) Rakanji Sd23w mono-ii
Sd11e Taiyo (0-0) Tenei Sd11w henka leads to a short but wild bout
