Kensho Aki 2023

Recommended Posts

I haven't followed the kensho lists each basho that closely, so it's strange to see that the yusho winner loses the top place to a 9-6 ozeki. Even more considering Kirishima is a new ozeki and Takakeisho an established one. I guess Kirishima made better use of his musubi-no-ichiban bouts, if I counter correctly those were 4-3 in Kirishima's favour. And the yusho was only 11-4. But still, weird.

Kirishima had not only more last bout wins, he had them on the days that count most: day 15 and day 1 - and day 7 had was also better than most days

I'm out of reactions but thanks for the reply! And I'm guessing that Kirishima got day 1 and 15 musubi-no-ichiban because he's the highest ranked ozeki?

Exactly, the highest ranked gets the most opportunities to collect kensho

Yeah, when there's 3 of a sanyaku rank, the lowest ranked one gets screwed out of would normally would be their day to have the last match (a multiple of 3) because for Day 15 it resets to whoever it highest rank.  That's not as big of a deal when there's 2 or 4 to a rank when it wouldn't work out evenly regardless.

I'm very surprised to see that Wakamotoharu doesn't have a lot of kensho for his bout. It seems to me that he is a popular wrestler but not for the sponsors...

Just to give you an idea of the money they made. Kirishima won around 87 000$ of kensho. Wakamotoharu around 8 000$ and the poor Tamawashi just 600$...

Well, you are supposed to win in order to collect kensho...

And win at the right bouts. Some wins can give you nothing and other can be gold !

He had no regular sponsor that each day put a kensho on him.

Mitakeumi didn't get much more than his personal kensho: 9 of 15: 60% of 118 = 71 kensho - he was the lowest ranked in the top 6 and thus had mostly unattractive opponents - 1 win against Endo, but a loss against the only other from the top 6, Asanoyama, who with the same amount of wins got close to twice the number of 60% from his personal kensho - 62, higher ranked Kotonowaka just over twice that (63.6 kensho)

Only the ozeki really get enough profitable bouts - they all have much more than double the amount they'd have with just the personal kensho. Wakamotoharu mostly was in top 5 bouts, which have at least 1 Tama Home kensho and as sekiwake regularly attracts a decent amount, but he only had one profitable win, against Kirishima in a penultimate bout - he lost all other bouts against members of the top 6 and had no bouts with other popular kensho attractors
