Seki-Toto/Quad/Oracle/Fantasy Sumo banzuke for Kyushu 2017 (+ invitation to play!)

Seki-Toto (play):

The yusho score line dropped to just 11-4 for Aki basho, and the title was eventually won on tie-breakers by juryo Takanorappa for arguably the third surprise winner in a row. The makuuchi results were once again fairly mediocre with an average of 7.6 wins, although the presence of no less than 10 8-7's still meant a pretty lopsided KK/MK split of 24/15. However, outside of a couple of slightly unlucky KK players at M10/11 and in high juryo things worked out very well on this banzuke.

Only one sanyaku-ranked player managed to reach double-digits, and he wasn't found among the yokozuna or ozeki. Norizo completed one full year without any record better than 9-6, and if it wasn't for the fact that there was also just one makekoshi in there (and in the oldest of the 6 results, so 5 straight KK now), I'd have been tempted to ask for the scissors.

Kadoban ScreechingOwl's ozeki career looked to be on the rocks for a while as he found himself down at 3-6 at one point, but six straight wins to close out the basho made a clear statement after all. Fellow ozeki Susanoo scored 9 wins as well, and Gurowake went 8-7 following his repromotion.

Seven sekiwake and komusubi were active, but only three managed to KK, with Unkonoyama leading the way at 10-5. He has actually turned in an ozeki-level run of results with consecutive scores of 11-4, 9-6, 11-4, 10-5 (the three 10+ scores were all just one win off the respective yusho lines) - but unfortunately he has done so starting from Juryo 1, so he has only now arrived at the sekiwake rank. Pandaazuma had the sole KK among the incumbent sekiwake, scoring 9 wins, while Konosato and Andoreasu are headed down. Yusho runner-up Ganzohnesushi moves up to sekiwake as well, and has scored similarly to Unkonoyama with 11 / 9 / 9 /11 wins, but started out even lower at Juryo 2.

Seki-Quadrumvirate (play):

Great depths were plumbed by the Aki 2017 results, with the average winning rate of just 40.8% the lowest since Natsu 2011. That made the +1 score adjustment a no-brainer this time, although even that didn't help the KK/MK splits much (from 7/31 to 14/24 in the top division, 5/18 to 9/14 below).

Bad news for the ozeki hopefuls ranked at sekiwake, none of whom scored better than 8-7. Choshu-yuki's run at least remained intact with that minimum kachikoshi, while Ganzohnesushi, Norizo and Flohru had to vacate the third-highest rank again. The incumbent ozeki for their part both managed to KK, so ScreechingOwl and Gurowake are set to enter another tournament without kadoban concerns.

Joining Choshu-yuki on ozeki runs now are the promoted komusubi duo Konosato (with back-to-back 10-5's) and Gernobono (12-3, 9-6). Yusho winner Sebunshu was shuttled up to komusubi from a little outside the normal zone to reward his performance. Even so there weren't a whole lot of credible promotion candidates, so sanyaku had to be reduced from 10 slots to 9 again.

Fortunately, the rest of the results were distributed in a very banzuke maker-friendly way so this actually looks like a proper banzuke for a change after the last two messes.

Pandaazuma's amazing streak of three yusho was finally snapped as Aki basho ended with ozeki Gurowake beating him by one single point. That result followed on the heels of Gurowake being in a tie for 4th place in Nagoya, putting him on tsunatori watch for Kyushu. Norizo again didn't figure into the yusho race, but achieved credible 9 wins, as did Choshu-yuki in her ozeki debut tournament.

ScreechingOwl sadly completed the turnaround from his own tsunatori shot, going makekoshi for the second straight basho to get demoted from the ozeki rank. Andrasoyamawaka2 also went MK and missed out on the opportunity to move up.

Fantasy Sumo (play):

Sadly, Taka's extended tsuna run sputtered to a finish outside the top 30 in Aki, not nearly enough to maintain his shot at promotion. It was good enough for kachikoshi though, as was the score for fellow ozeki Pandaazuma, so both fulfilled their duties at the highest filled rank on the FS banzuke. Previously-demoted Kuroimori unfortunately fell well short of 10 wins and will have to try to return to ozeki the hard way.

We entered Aki basho with no less than 5 sekiwake, all of them with reasonably good shots at promotion, and the basho proved cooperative in enabling some high peak scores (not always a given in FS), but - sadly all of them went makekoshi. However, completely out of left field a new challenger appeared: Chisaiyama, runner-up in the main competition, scored 13 (adjusted) wins for the following set of results:

It's a distinctly unusual promotion run, but in keeping with my banzuke-making philosophy that truly exceptional performances deserve to be rewarded above and outside the usual framework, there wasn't any way past those impressive two second-place finishes in a four-basho span, even without a sekiwake appearance. Congrats!

Four maegashira-ranked players also picked up strong scores of 12-3 or 13-2 and all found themselves promoted to sanyaku; in some cases a bit generously, but with the incumbents having bombed so badly there was plenty of space to fill. 11 sanyaku again, though with a newly expanded ozeki section and loads of komusubi for a change.

Outside of some bad luck for four MK players in mid-juryo this banzuke worked out rather well.

The final 2017 edition of Fantasy Sumo saw victory for Ryukyuyama by 4 points over runner-up Toratorii. Third place was another point back, before a sizable gap to the rest of the field.

146 entrants with 12 of them being new, that's more in line with the standards than the last two tournaments were. Unsurprisingly, the strange huge influx of players we got back in Aki basho disappeared almost entirely again.

Another basho where you picked the right yokozuna or else... And as usual, ailing-but-participating high-rankers meant lots of kinboshi (six) and sansho (two in the joi), so plenty of extra points and wins were available - and at least partly picked up with Takakeisho and Hokutofuji this time, while Tamawashi and Ichinojo and the two lower-ranked sansho winners were decidedly specialist picks.

Two brackets without a KK rikishi doesn't happen too often, I think.

KK sweep by the 5 rikishi in section 5, so everyone was guaranteed at least one win. Aoiyama was the only MK rikishi in his bracket, adding insult to the fact that he was also one of the more popular bad picks. Myogiryu or Daiamami by contrast barely hurt their nearly 100 selectors at all, given that the best choice was only one point ahead.

Average wins by division:

Makuuchi  8.83 (30 KK, 10 MK; -1 win -> 27 KK, 13 MK; -2 wins -> 14 KK, 26 MK)
Juryo     8.83 (18 KK,  6 MK; -1 win -> 12 KK, 12 MK, -2 wins ->  9 KK, 15 MK)
Makushita 7.91 (42 KK, 40 MK; -1 win -> 35 KK, 47 MK)

Overall   8.32

Makuuchi distinctly screwed up again in KK/MK terms. However, the KK overhang at -1 is largely situated in sanyaku (9 KK, 2 MK), with the 18/11 split in the maegashira ranks somewhat manageable on its own. Juryo is a straight-forward decision, of course.

Makushita looks like it ought to get away without an adjustment, but not so fast: The average is a result of a massive split in performance between the "meat" of the division, and the struggling rest. Ms1-20 has posted 8.61 wins (17/14 split on -1), and Ms21-40 is at similarly strong 8.48 (10/13 on -1), but the stragglers and newbies below scored only 6.68 wins.

In other words, -1 it is for all three divisions.
