Masuiyama new career as a singer

As Mihogaseki-oyakata he was the 2nd shisho of Kitanoumi: now singer Masuiyama will open a "Chanko Masuiyama" at the keiko ground of the old Mihogaseki-beya, with the old name plates of Kitanoumi, Hokutenyu etc. on the wall like in the heya. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1572350.html

Good luck to Chanko Masuiyama. What memories! My first visit to this place (yes, it's the same place!) must have been in the later 1970s when I was first starting as the Foreign Press Center's employee taking foreign journalists to watch sumo training. The original Ozeki Masuiyama, then Mihogaseki oyakata, was in charge, and his son (later the second Ozeki and much later the shisho) and others were training. Halfway through the keiko session Andy Adams, who was working hard to publicize his English-language magazine "Sumo World" walked in without a greeting and helped himself to a seat on one side. The master gave me a withering glower, but I just pointed to my own group of young visiting journalists from all over Asia, who were sitting properly and just making notes. "No connection!" was the implication.

As I live nearby I have kept tabs on the building (which was first loaned to another shisho) and also to how things were going in the singing career. He seemed to have a charmed life and somehow stayed in his mid-forties for about 20 years. It seems now, however, that it is time to move on, and I wish all success to the newest venture. Whatever you call him, this is a good man, and a man of many talents. Best wishes in his old age.

I hadn't noticed it yet, but presently singer Masuiyama, like his father Masuiyama I, both as Mihogaseki-oyakata shisho of Kitanoumi, is a reasonably good painter as well. Both have had paintings in Nikakai exhibitions, Nikaten.

on the net several sumo paintings of Masuiyama the singer son can be found

I couldn't find any information if the cover for his single "Sonna Yuko ni ..." was painted by himself

I removed the escaping pics layout to use the thread for more. Tedious to first hide the pics (to be able to edit) and then try to grab them from the post.

All about Masuiyama's geinou activities: http://www.nikkansports.com/search/top-search.html?q=増位山太志郎&ch=芸能

He has a new song to promote 白雪草 shirayuki-sou (white snow grass, some from the edelweiss family)

Karaoke full version with the flower as background  -  text

This means all kind of PR activities for him - for cup sake he had a try at glass making, now at (Chitose-)sweets making (for his sweet voice), in a candy shop in Ometesando. http://www.nikkansports.com/entertainment/news/1735790.html

masuiyama161109-ogp_0.jpg

this candy is meant to show he himself as Kintaro

there was another nice pic as tono-sama with the 2 other geinou-jin playing wife and daughter.

Masuiyama's song debut was in 1972. His 2nd song "Sonna Yuko ni horemashita" (1974) had at first sold 600 000 times - the record company then went bankrupt and at the new one he for the first time got a royalty contract. Afterwards another 650 000 records were sold.

In 1978 he won a best hit award for 1.3 million sold records of his 1977 song "Sonna onna no hitori-goto" and also had a chance for the best record of the year award, but didn't get it. Looks like he also got an offer for the NHK year end kouhaku uta-gassen song festival, but apparently the NSK refused.

Later the NSK prohibited song recordings and only after finishing there at 65 he released new songs. http://www.news-postseven.com/archives/20170205_488943.html

with the award

Bonus points if you're old enough to get this joke.  (BTW, we need a singing emoji...)

That's from the great 70's Hakuho show, "The Love GOAT".

A new single for Masuiyama and a new trade he shows to promote it: "Gomen ne (sorry), Reiko" - not the Reiwa rei in Reiko and not the one for freezing, which he shows here, but he made a pun of it with rei-ko as abbreviation for his new ice coffee - and he served it to passers by

Masuiyama on the 28th brought chanko to a record shop near his Chanko Masuiyama, in the hope for a new spring for the recording industry, hinting at his latest song, otona no haru ni, in a grown up's spring
