The Shikona Game

Recommended Posts

The Shikona Game

The aim is to create a Shikona as long as possible by connecting several existing Shikona.

The rules:

First you choose any of the Shikona on the current Banzuke.

Then your second Shikona has to begin with (at least) the last two letters of the first one you have chosen.

Then the third one has to begin with (at least) the last two letters of the 2nd Shikona. And so on.

An example (post it this way): Kotomitsukitanoumiyabiyamainoumiyagino

In difference to the example you only are allowed to choose active Rikishi from the Haru Banzuke (Y1e – Jk22e).

You must not pick the same Shikona more than once in your entry and you are not allowed to pick the already posted ones.

The points:

Only the number of letters counts (not the number of Shikona).

You get 1 point for each „usual letter“ and 2 points for every „connection letter“ (the underlined letters in the example),

so that if the real number of letters is equal, the number of connections is decisive.

The connection between two Shikona always has to consist of at least two letters, but could be even longer (for example two syllables).

Bonus points were awarded if one Shikona is inside another one, for example „Toki“ in „Tokitsuumi“ (the number of bonus points depends on how long the including Shikona is, in the example 10 bonus points for „Tokitsuumi“)

The player with the most points is the winner of the game.

Tiebreaker is the total number of wins of all your picked Rikishi (at the Haru Basho 2015).

Probably this is a one-time game.

The deadline is Shonichi, 10 a.m.

Nice Job! (Nodding yes...)

69 total letters + 23 connection letters + 17 bonus points for Aoiyama (7, including Aoi) and Kisenosato (10, including Sato).

109 points for Rufakiyama!

picked Rikishi:

Orora, Rao, Aoiyama, Maeta, Tamawashi, Hidenoumi, Miyakojima, Masunoyama, Masutenryu, Ryuki, Kisenosato, Tochiozan

I can not count Orora because the rules say, the next Shikona has to begin at least with the last two letters (and it's not Raoiyama... :-) )

I overlooked it at first, too (yay for the delete button...) - I think that's supposed to be Orora - Rao - Aoiyama.

Haha, you are brilliant. Thank you! (Applauding...)

If I'm not mistaken, the shortest non-trivial solution is Chiyooume - Meisei. So avoid that one. ;-)

Shouldn't Rufakiyama also get bonus points for Sato in Kisenosato?

Yes, of course. You are right. Obviously I am a bit overstrained with my own rules... :-)

All I can think of is Ichinojokoryu

13 letters + 2 connection letters + 7 bonus points for Jokoryu (including Okoryu)

22 points for Kasutera!

picked rikishi:

Ichinojo, Jokoryu

Other players are not allowed to pick:

Aoiyama, Hidenoumi, Ichinojo, Jokoryu, Kisenosato, Maeta, Masunoyama, Masutenryu, Miyakojima, Orora, Rao, Ryuki, Tamawashi, Tochiozan

I don´t agreed with that

for example

kisenosatochiozan it´s different of kisenosatoyohibiki

the ban should be for the same connections only

But this is how it works. The earlier the entry the easier the choice. And there are more than enough other Rikishi to pick.

Very good. I counted 118 letters + 44 connection letters + 6 bonus points for Oisato (including Sato) = 168 points

Wamahada takes the lead!

Ako - Koba it´s trivial for you?

That sequence is incomplete, there are shikona to continue with after Koba. Trivial are chains that terminate immediately after the first and only shikona, such as Genju, Irie or Kyokuhozan.

Actually I was wrong about Chiyooume - Meisei, I was only looking for two-letter continuations (which don't exist at either side, it's unique for two-shikona chains in that), but of course it's possible to continue with *chi and Sei*.

The idea behind the "banned" Shikona was to keep the game short and to reward quick entries.

But because I don't want to make you angry and I have a lot of respect for the work of Chishafuwaku and Achiyama (sorry for wasting your time by the way), I decided (better: I was forced ;-)) to change the rule as it was suggested.

Everybody is allowed to pick any Shikona on the current Banzuke (but not more than once). The players who already entered the game are free to make another try although I believe the Yusho decision has already been made. Here are the points for Chishafuwaku and Achiyama:

Chishafuwaku:

587 total letters + 172 connection letters + 144 bonus points = 903 points (even 75 Kaiho was correct. I thought he retired some years ago) :-)

(bonus points for Aonosho (7, including Onosho), Nankairiki (10), Kaiho (5, both including Kai), Wakayamanaka (12, including Yamana), Sadanosato (10), Mienosato (9), Wakanosato (10) Kisenosato (10), Kasugasato (10), Burinosato (10), Tochinosato (10), Hokutosato (10, all including Sato), Hokutohomare (12), Hokutohana (10), Hokutosho (9) and Hokutosato (10, all including Hokuto))

Achiyama: Unfortunately you wrote "Hokutowaka" twice (21 & 38) so I counted 1 - 37.

254 total letters + 72 connection letters + 74 bonus points = 400 points

(bonus points for Sadanosato (10), Wakanosato (10), Tochisato (9), Tochinosato (11), Mienosato (9, all including Sato), Hokutohana (10), Hokutowaka, Hokutogo (8, all including Hokuto) and Aonosho (7, including Onosho))

Many thanks for your entries (I didn't expect responses this huge)

By the way: Even with the old rule, chishafuwaku would have taken the lead with 205 points for the section from 31 to 49 (30 Honda and 50 Matsuda were banned). So you see: It was not impossible to do it!
