Takamizawa 0 Posted May 19, 2010 I'm not sure if this has been discussed in any other threads on the subject of dame-oshi, but it seems to me like Kakuryu is often on the receiving end of these, especially from Hakuho and Harumafuji (and I'm not just referring to this tournament). Since this is just based on my own perception, has anyone else noticed this, or am I imagining things? Is it simply because of his sometimes evasive style sumo and that pisses his opponents off, or is there something else there? I don't know much about the inner relationships between rikishi, but I'd be interested to know if he is on friendly terms with his Mongolian seniors or other sempai since he gets such (at least peceived by me) rough treatment in the ring. Maybe I'm just reading too much into this, since I have a soft spot for Kakuryu since his expression always seems so meek and innocent (Whistling...) . You will usually see dame-oshi at the end of any close bout for a Yokozuna/Ozeki, as an extra assertion of his superiority. Kakuryu just happens to push those guys to the limit more than the others, that's all. I'm no insider, but I'm almost sure Kakuryu gets along just fine with all the top rankers (Fay could confirm or deny this). Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Yokozuna Hakuho committed his second dame-oshi in as many days shoving Sekiwake Kisenosato off the dohyo at the end of their bout. Hakuho was actually quite worked up after the bout upset by the face slap Kisenosato delivered during their contest. The Yokozuna was angry as he spoke to reporters commenting, "He doesn't get it either does he? That was uncalled for. He's mistaken as to which opponents he gives a hari-te. Maybe if he figures that out, he'll get stronger." Hakuho was upset the previous day as well after being henka'd at the tachi-ai by Kakuryu. The Yokozuna responded by sending Kakuryu several rows up the hana-michi after the Maegashira rikishi had clearly stepped out of the ring. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Mike probably translated it from the press last night, so it's probably the view of some Japanese journalist. Kisenosato barely had to do anything more than gently step down from the dohyo. Words have established meanings - if that gets counted as an unnecessary shove now, there are probably a triple-digit number per basho in the sekitori divisions alone. Scanning the excerpts on Google News and a few selected articles, I don't see anybody calling it a dame-oshi (unlike the previous day's bout), so no, the journalists probably didn't come up with that. BTW: Anyway, Hakuho's statement makes it pretty clear it was intended as a dame-oshi ... How so? In the actual quote he's merely complaining about the way Kisenosato opened the bout.
