Where to watch Sumo

Gentlemen and fellow sumo fans

I've tried to contact Nihon Sumo Kyokai through their website in order to buy DVDs with the bashos of the year, commented in English or German.

I've got no reply and after Eurosport regretfully has stopped their transmissions from the six annual Japanese tournaments I've no way of actually watching my favourite sport.

Could anyone give me an adress or link? I've missed the action, the atmosphere and the grand traditions displayed during the transmissions.

I followed the rise of Asashoryu and griefed when he retired - but rules are rules I guess when they are part of the oldest sport still to be performed.

Could anyone help me out?

A lot of the matches can be found on youtube. Specifically on certain channels of users who videotape the matches and then post them on youtube. Also you can find an NSK live stream on the forum each basho.

Last time I checked the NSK site mentioned that this basho was the last one to be covered by the live stream.

That's too bad. I just canceled TV Japan at home though looking at the baseball gambling scandal there may not be any sumo now until September anyways...

I'd say it just means discontinued for the basho. Those highlight bouts haven been there forever for each basho.

Not to worry Harry! Had this conversation with Yamamotoyama yesterday and he said Nagoya will go on!! He and Baruto left last night. Financially cancelling Nagoya is impossible. Maybe some people will be suspended or not... by that time. But there are still enough rikishi to go on. There is so much already financially down on the basho with many rikishi already in place from midweek last week to clean up remote heya and build the dohyos. Another group has left this weekend and the rest next Friday thru Sunday.

And for the record YMY says gambling is stupid! :-O

Obviously I don't spend much time looking at the English sections, but to the best of my knowledge anything in correct English has been done at some time by David Shapiro. The problem, here and elsewhere, is always that the person responsible for uploading knows little or no English so the connective parts may be nonsense; or at a higher level, when an update is needed, the person in charge thinks he/she can change things without consulting the original native speaker. The results may vary from minor mistakes to total garbage.

If you've been to the special exhibitions at the Sumo Museum for the last year or three you may have noticed a brave attempt at adding English explanations. These usually make very little sense unless you already know what they are trying to get across. But any attempt to point out their limitations is met with a stonewall; the Japanese lady responsible for the 'English' is a relation of the man who runs the museum.

This is a problem not limited to sumo, of course, and the higher you go the worse is the problem. I couldn't tell you how often my (and other peoples') carefully-crafted English has been massacred by some bureaucrat who thinks he knows better, because something we have written doesn't fit the one 'correct' answer he was taught in cram school to get through the U. of Tokyo entrance exam.

How long ago was that? The site redesign and move to Goo webhosting back in 2004 introduced quite a few new page templates, and other stuff has been changed piece by piece since then as well.
