Is it routine for rikishi to change shikona when becoming sekitori?

It is very common among those who have their family name as shikona when entering Juryo. This goes for almost everone of the college rikishi who started in Makushita (as Uchida) , but also the occasional rikishi who started from Mae-zumo (as Tanaka). It is likely Nakao will once again use Wakatsutomu next basho as well.

Well, since no-one else did: congrats to Kokkai for becoming first European (well, Caucasian) sekitori. (Laughing...)

Now, on towards san'yaku!  (Baaa...)

I'm not so sure about this one. You know, the banzuke writing gyōji start writing on Wednesday to my knowledge. This is the reason the new shikona are already known with the fact of the Jūryō promotion. If no new shikona is given for Nakao, then probably it didn't change and therefore just can't be changed till next basho due to the writing of the banzuke. Of course the non-mentioning of a changed shikona might just be lazyness on the part of the newspapers. WE SHALL SEE.  (Laughing...)  :-P

Tanaka! KaitoU!

Tomozuna-fan congratulates Tanaka for finally making it to juryo! Good stable rikishi who can do both yotsu and oshi if I am not mistaken! He has also been KaioU's tsukebito. Hopefully Tanaka's promotion will spice up Tomozuna-beya's keiko to even more spirited levels and Sentoryu can make yet one more time to juryo.

Kokkai, Uchida and Tanaka as shin-juryo brings excitement after a grey juryo state in Haru.

Oh man..as if we didn't have enough problems..Kaitou? Will he eventually fight Kaihou? After Kaihou fights Kaiou? Or will Kaitou fight Kaiou as well?Good thing Kitao was kicked out..Otherwise..

Ok, so Kaiou and Kaitou are from Tomozuna and can't fight each other, except in a playoff..

Three way tomoesen? Kaiou-Kaitou-Kaihou? And what if Ryuuou makes it up? And Ryuukai? And Raidou? And Raikou?

Not to mention Rohou. And Ama. (So he's from a different joke , but I like him..)

All real guys, BTW, in Makushita and mostly climbing, carefully plotting the eradication of TV announcers' teeth.

WE SHALL SEE (Aww...)

Is it a point of honor to be a high-ranked rikishi's tsukebito?

Kaiou-Kaitou-Kaihou? And what if Ryuuou makes it up? And Ryuukai? And Raidou? And Raikou?

(Laughing...)  :-9 Funny.  I would like it if that happens, although it would force extra caution when picking game entries.   (Exclamation)

I shudder at the mere thought. Just think of the Eurosport transmissions. Right now, the Swedish commentator calls (in Swedish) Kaio and Kaiho respectively "Kajo" and "Kajo with an h"

(Jumping of joy...)

Well, I lied... Not really, but I was misinformed (that is, didn't know the truth... ) and I'm somewhat surprised no one noticed...

Actually, Tanaka also started as Makushita tsukedashi because of his college sumo experience from Chuo daigaku, the school whose sumotori also include Dejima, Tamakasuga and Takekaze. He had his professional debut in March 1998 which means that he is the second slowest Makushita Tsukedashi starter to reach Juryo, in his 32nd basho. The record is held by Hananofuji who took 41 basho to become sekitori in Kyushu 1987 and joint third is retired Ohinode and current Ms17w Hokutoiwa who made their Juryo debut in their 31st basho.

Tanaka's promotion and the retirement of Tochitaiki also means that there is now only one active former college competitor started as Makushita tsukedashi through the old system, who are yet to reach Juryo, namely Bushuyama of Musashigawa who had a 4-3 record at Ms25w in the Haru basho. There is also Asamiyoshi who started as Ms15Td in 2002.03 who was out injured in Haru at Ms16e.

I don't think it's not noticing, it may be just that we consider you an absolute, reliable source of information and don't think to question what you say  (Laughing...)
