Musashimaru Kyujo watch..

Recommended Posts

It is looking more and more like Musashimaru will be missing the next basho as well. Recovery from his wrist surgery is slower than was expected. He has done no real keiko yet. Musashigawa Oyakata sternly said that chances are getting slim by the day for his participation in Natsu.

Final decision will be reached before May 5th, the date of the exhbition matches in front of the big guns (soken).

It's sad to read such news about Maru. To me it looks more and more like the Aki basho last year with the yūshō decider on senshūraku between Musashimaru and Takanohana has ended an era with a bang.

Yokozuna consecutive kyujos:

Not a good list to be on  :-(

I hope Musashimaru gets healthy quickly and comes back.  I think his lack of presence greatly affects the basho.

Perhaps the big man is just toying with the media and will surprise us all?  :-D

Where are all the hand surgeons of the forum when you need them!?! Motile Moti's link offers medical information too. It has now been about 4 months since the operation of the wrist where evidently some kind of tendon transplant was put which means he has had some severly damaged vital tendon between some of the wrist bones. Few weeks ago I read an article covering wrist surgeries. Certain vital tendons in wrist are essential for wrist's health and wealth. With damaged tendon the degeneration of the small joints can be quick. Hence the surgery. Maru had endured a bad wrist for months before the surgery so he may have developed some irreversible damage there. 4 months sounds like awful long period of recuperation without sufficient cure to even consider keiko yet. Worrysome.

The other side of this is that if the wrist will heal he does have astronomical number of healthy bodyparts on his large frame so getting back to his yokozuna sumo shouldn't be nearly as jeopardised as Takanohana's was due to severe knee injury but he needs his left wrist too to stay at the top.

What I find notable in the whole saga of injured Yokozuna is the transparency with which Musashigawa-beya and Maru operate.  I appreciate the honesty so far in telling us well in advance when he was sitting out, and the generally good flood of information about the injury and how he is doing.  Contrast that with the terribly annoying secrecy from Takanohana and Futagoyama, making it a big guesswork whether or not he will or he won't, and then pulling out at the last minute several times, just to leave us all in shock...

Well, at least we know that Maru easily could take off another three basho, and no one could say A THING! Cause the precedent has been set!  So, take good care, and see you in July!

Cheers

I was just going to say the same thing.

If they (the Kyokai) pressured him now, they would risk looking really bad and unfair, especially after all the leeway they gave Takanohana.

I agree.  What was the actual maximum time that Takanohana missed in one stretch, while he was yokozuna?  Should there be a limit on this, e.g. a year, after which the yokozuna must retire?

Hi!

Not good. Check up results from yesterday (April 17th) are that his wrist inflammation has gotten worse, and chances of his entering Natsu are deteriorating. Reason - Overworking trying to rehabilitate.

Doctors order one week complete rest. Oyakata says "WE SHALL SEE."

I hope his Oyakata doesn't meddle with the doctors too much. It would be tragic if Musahismaru never got back to 100% strength because he didn't get enough rest.
