Kintamayama 47,178 Posted March 6, 2004 (edited) 77 new recruits between the ages of 15-23 underwent various tests today at the shindeshi kensa, 15 more than last Basho, and a rise in numbers for the second straight year. 62 of them passed the minimum height/weight requirements (173 cm/75 kilos). The other 15 who are in the "over 167/67 but under the official requirements gimme another chance " category had already had their preliminary physicals (new type of tests decided on February 24th) and joined the others for the internal organ tests. Results will be published on the 14th. College Yokozuna Kanbayashi (Hakkaku) weighing in- starts at tsukedashi (Makushita 15), together with Yokoyama of Azumazeki, last year's college Yokozuna. Kaikitsune Makoto 210 Posted March 6, 2004 Wow. Hakkaku-guy has a VERY strong looking body. Perfect sumo body unless he is very short? Lot of power and size in that! What is his history?

That's pretty encouraging news...let's hope the trend keeps up for the next few years. (I was stupid...) The other 15 who are in the "over 167/67 but under the official requirements gimme another chance " category That number (almost 20% of all applicants) is pretty high, isn't it? I wonder if there had always been an untapped "market" of smaller guys who are now finally able to get into ozumo... Wow. Hakkaku-guy has a VERY strong looking body. Perfect sumo body unless he is very short? Lot of power and size in that! What is his history? 178 cm, 135 kg, according to this Joe Kuroda post from when Kanbayashi won College Yokozuna honours last year. Sorry to dig up a dead thread... I didn't realize at the time that he was not mentioned in the article Moti translated, but having just looked at the NSK's scoreboard (where he's not listed either), whatever happened to the third tsukedashi starter, Nakano from Musashigawa-beya? He is probably still suffering from the wrist injury that kept him out of Hatsu. Probably.. BTW, I see Yokoyama's shikona is Takamifuji. One can only hope that his wrist injury doesn't turn into the same kind of neverending story as Maru's...
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted March 14, 2004 Great news about the increasing number of rookies. Why is March the traditional time for rikishi to start their career?
Manekineko 200 Posted March 14, 2004 School year in Japan starts/ends in March. So these are the kids that have just finished their compulsory schooling... Me thinks.

Mark Buckton 1 Posted March 15, 2004 (edited) School year in Japan starts/ends in March. So these are the kids that have just finished their compulsory schooling... Me thinks. Ends march - starts April. Plus - 77 - 6th lowest number in Heisei era (highest being 151 in Heisei 4 I think) Incidentally - Mae-zumo boys had their run out today - all fresh faced and starry eyed - amusing to watch.
