Kintamayama 47,171 Posted February 3, 2004 (edited) The elder of the Nishonoseki Ichimon, which includes Sadogatake beya and the newly-named Takanohana-beya among others, is 63 year old Sadogatake Oyakata. He is seriously angry at Takanohana. Apparently, Takanohana ignored Sadogatake Oyakata at Daizen's Danpatsu shiki on February 1st. It is customary to approach your elder and greet him, especially when you just received your own heya. "We were both there, but he did not come to greet me. Usually, when you open your own heya, you say a few words", said Sadogatake. The Sumo world is one where respect is important. Not getting any respect annoyed Sadogatake Oyakata very much. "From now on, he has to respect his elders. As an Oyakata who will be teaching deshi, he should be a model to them. His shisho should be teaching him this", he said, referring to Taka's shisho, Futagoyama Oyakata. But it seems this isn't the only reason for Sadogatake's anger. Takanohana beya's inaugural party is scheduled for June the 1st, but there are no plans for any ceremonies, the usual being at least a Yokozuna dohyo-iri. "We'll do that a bit later", said Futagoyama Oyakata, rather vaguely. "What exactly does THAT mean? It's not clear!!", huffed Sadogatake Oyakata. When Takanohana got his tsuna in 1994, Sadogatake was the Ichimon's senior ex-Yokozuna and oversaw Taka's tsuna-uchi ceremony (same ceremony Asashouryuu missed this time and was blasted for ..) This makes it even more worrisome.. Kitanoumi Rijicho, OTOH, received a greeting from Takanohana at the same time. "He came up to me and greeted me cordially. The fact that I'm from Dewanoumi Ichimon has no bearing. An inheritance of a heya is not an Ichimon affair, but a Riji-kai affair, so I don't see the problem", he said, trying to defend Takanohana. Looks as if Takanohana Oyakata has started off on the wrong foot.. Edited February 3, 2004 by Kintamayama

I assume this is because Takanohana is a foreigner and therefore hasn't learned how respect works in the Japanese society (Clapping wildly...) :-P ;-) Edited February 3, 2004 by Yubiquitoyama

The guy is a loose cannon! Next thing you'll know, he'll be pulling Dewanoumi-oyakata's hair, and smash Musashigawa-oyakata's rear view mirror... (Clapping wildly...) But, he is still young, and has lots to learn... :-P Cheers Zenjimoto
Guest Takashoryu Posted February 4, 2004 It looks to me that Takanohana is preparing to join an other ichimon. His beya is part of the Nishonoseki Ichimon not by choice but by inheritance. You can choose your friends but you can't choose your family. Now the matter here is: is an ichimon friends or family?
Gernobono 467 Posted February 4, 2004 a change of ichimons would be out of question by now i suppose...futagoyama-oyakata still is in the rijikai and i guess his son cannot change ichimons because his father was elected there by the ichimon-co-members and therefore owes them respect....and takanohana clearly owes respect to his father..... sadogatake oyakata on the other hand will retire soon and therefore there surely is no reason to stir up things.... btw: how is a elder of an ichimon named?....is he voted?...or does an ancessor of a heya heir the name, too? Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted February 4, 2004 btw: how is a elder of an ichimon named?....is he voted?...or does an ancessor of a heya heir the name, too? Well, by status alone Nishonoseki Oyakata would be the ichimon elder. Since he isn't and Sadogatake is past 63, I'd venture to guess this position (inofficial as it is, I assume) is based on seniority alone.
MongolPower 0 Posted February 6, 2004 What/Who is an ichimon?
Manekineko 200 Posted February 6, 2004 Ichimon is an association of stables (heya). If you consider heya to be "families", then ichimon is a "clan". Same-ichimon rikishi often train together, perform additional duties of sword-carrier and dew-sweeper in yokozuna ring-entering ceremony (when yokozuna is from their ichimon and hasn't got enough high-ranked rikishi in his heya), etc etc etc.
