Doitsuyama 1,259 Posted March 11, 2003 Asashoryu is learning what it means to be a Yokozuna. It means a kinboshi when he loses to a Maegashira like he did today against fellow Mongolian Kyokutenho and everyone frowns upon this. But is has to be said that Kyokutenho was very good and the kakenage was a really nice one. Still, Asashoryu seems to lack the decisive forward attack he had last basho. Musoyama lost the third time against a Maegashira, and I can't see an apparent injury. His forward movement (which is pretty much his sole Ozeki level strength) is lost somewhere; maybe he finds it in time to recover. Ozeki Chiyotaikai is the only Sanyaku left without a loss. He is leading together with Kotoryu and Jumonji, a surprising trio. Tamanoshima won a long bout against Wakanosato; Kotonowaka's bout of course also was a long one, a sure way to win against Toki. -- Doitsuyama Day 3 Juryo J13e Kotonomine (2-1) yorikiri Ms1e Daizen (0-2) J11e Kakizoe (3-0) hatakikomi J13w Hidenokuni (1-2) J10w Harunoyama (2-1) yorikiri J12e Tomikaze (2-1) J9e Hamanishiki (3-0) fusen J11w Juzan (0-3) J8e Tochisakae (3-0) tsukiotoshi J10e Kitazakura (1-2) J6w Hayateumi (2-1) yorikiri J9w Dewanofuji (0-3) J4e Oginishiki (1-2) uwatenage J8w Wakatoba (0-3) J7e Wakakosho (2-1) yorikiri J3w Aogiyama (2-1) J3e Asanowaka (2-1) oshidashi J6e Gokenzan (0-3) J2w Otsukasa (2-1) yoritaoshi J5e Senshuyama (2-1) J5w Oikari (3-0) tsukiotoshi J1w Yotsukasa (0-3) J4w Ushiomaru (2-1) oshidashi J1e Komahikari (1-2) Makuuchi M14w Jumonji (3-0) yorikiri J2e Kobo (1-2) M13w Takekaze (1-2) tsukiotoshi M15e Tochinohana (0-3) M14e Gojoro (2-1) tsukidashi M12w Akinoshima (0-3) M10e Asasekiryu (1-2) oshidashi M13e Kasuganishiki (2-1) M9w Miyabiyama (2-1) yorikiri M12e Kinkaiyama (2-1) M11w Tamarikido (2-1) yorikiri M9e Aminishiki (1-2) M8w Takanotsuru (2-1) oshidashi M11e Hokutoriki (2-1) M8e Tokitsuumi (2-1) yorikiri M10w Buyuzan (1-2) M5w Kaiho (1-2) hikiotoshi M7w Kyokushuzan (2-1) M5e Kotoryu (3-0) sukuinage M7e Kasugao (0-3) M3w Kotonowaka (1-2) yorikiri M6w Toki (1-2) M6e Iwakiyama (2-1) yorikiri M3e Shimotori (1-2) K1e Dejima (2-1) oshidashi M1e Takanonami (1-2) M4w Tamanoshima (2-1) hatakikomi S2e Wakanosato (2-1) S1w Kotomitsuki (2-1) hatakikomi M4e Wakanoyama (1-2) O2e Chiyotaikai (3-0) oshidashi M2e Tochinonada (1-2) M2w Takamisakari (1-2) uwatenage O1e Musoyama (0-3) O2w Kaio (2-1) hikiotoshi K1w Tosanoumi (1-2) M1w Kyokutenho (2-1) kakenage Y1w Asashoryu (2-1) Day 4 Makushita Ms15w Hochiyama (0-1) Ms14w Asofuji (0-1) Ms14e Yotsuguruma (0-1) Ms12w Tochinoyama (0-1) Ms12e Asahibenten (0-1) Ms10w Toyonoshima (0-1) Ms9e Sentoryu (0-1) Ms10e Yoshiazuma (0-1) Ms7w Wakainami (0-1) Ms6w Chiyotenzan (0-1) Juryo J13e Kotonomine (2-1) Ms2e Toyozakura (1-1) Ms1w Kokkai (1-1) J13w Hidenokuni (1-2) J10e Kitazakura (1-2) J11e Kakizoe (3-0) J10w Harunoyama (2-1) J9w Dewanofuji (0-3) J8e Tochisakae (3-0) J12e Tomikaze (2-1) J6e Gokenzan (0-3) J9e Hamanishiki (3-0) J5e Senshuyama (2-1) J8w Wakatoba (0-3) J7e Wakakosho (2-1) J5w Oikari (3-0) J6w Hayateumi (2-1) J4w Ushiomaru (2-1) J3e Asanowaka (2-1) J4e Oginishiki (1-2) J3w Aogiyama (2-1) J2w Otsukasa (2-1) J1e Komahikari (1-2) J2e Kobo (1-2) Makuuchi M13e Kasuganishiki (2-1) M14w Jumonji (3-0) J1w Yotsukasa (0-3) M13w Takekaze (1-2) M12e Kinkaiyama (2-1) M14e Gojoro (2-1) M11e Hokutoriki (2-1) M15e Tochinohana (0-3) M12w Akinoshima (0-3) M10w Buyuzan (1-2) M9e Aminishiki (1-2) M10e Asasekiryu (1-2) M11w Tamarikido (2-1) M9w Miyabiyama (2-1) M7e Kasugao (0-3) M8e Tokitsuumi (2-1) M8w Takanotsuru (2-1) M7w Kyokushuzan (2-1) M2e Tochinonada (1-2) M6w Toki (1-2) M1e Takanonami (1-2) M5w Kaiho (1-2) M6e Iwakiyama (2-1) M1w Kyokutenho (2-1) K1e Dejima (2-1) M5e Kotoryu (3-0) M4e Wakanoyama (1-2) K1w Tosanoumi (1-2) M4w Tamanoshima (2-1) S1w Kotomitsuki (2-1) M3w Kotonowaka (1-2) O2w Kaio (2-1) O2e Chiyotaikai (3-0) M2w Takamisakari (1-2) O1e Musoyama (0-3) S2e Wakanosato (2-1) Y1w Asashoryu (2-1) M3e Shimotori (1-2)
Fujisan 533 Posted March 11, 2003 Kotoryu and Jumonji might be a surprise but I said from the start this is Taikai's basho and it looks like I could be right-Still early days though,"Come on Asa,put this loss behind you and put your foot down,it could still be your Yusho." Naifuzan 1 Posted March 11, 2003 I must say I was impressed by toki today. Usually he just falls apart when his opponent gets ahold of him (Laughing...)
furanohana 3 Posted March 11, 2003 I have the personnal feeling that Toki is becoming more and more capable of sustening fights which doesn't finish immediatly. I think that one year ago, he would have quickly lost this bout. And I remember having made myself the same reflexion several times lately. These facts make me think that we should see Toki in sanyaku some time quite soon, and defenitely in 2003 ! (Laughing...) (OK, he'll finish 1-14 when he'll be up there... (Going nuts...) ) Could these changes in Toki's behaviour be related to the fact that he's now in the same heya as Asashoryu ?

Still, Asashoryu seems to lack the decisive forward attack he had last basho Kyokutenho has had good bouts against Shoryu before too and now he dealt with him superbly. Very powerful throw which didn't leave any chance for Shoryu. One of the highlights so far.Great timing and strength! Left inside grip throw without being in much of a trouble despite Shoryu's yori attempt. In other bouts Kotonowaka was clearly handicapped and that twisted toe must be painful. Kaio should have another easy day tomorrow to regain feel and shuffle through the early days without too many losses. Second syllable of KaKaU is having another awful start for basho. Immaturity radiates. Takamisakari did what Nami and Tenho on days 1 and 2 which was straight forward grip pursuing against Muso who gives in grips with stunning ease. Like Doitsu said there doesn't seem to be any particular weakness in Muso and no signs of injury. Maybe he simply is outskilled so clearly now. Doesn't get easier tomorrow as he faces Wakanosato who crumpled against oddly determined Tamanoshima who has weak joints. Dejima had a very nice de-ashi today. Asasekiryu was like a new rikishi. Takekaze seemed to injure his ankle and may well go kyujo.
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted March 11, 2003 Kyokutenho has had good bouts against Shoryu before too and now he dealt with him superbly. Yes indeed. Very good fight for Kyokutenho. Very bad for the 54 people (55 including myself) who picked Asashoryu in the chain gang game (Laughing...) Nonetheless, I don't see this as a big blemish on Asashoryu. I still think he's the favorite for the yusho, not Chyiotaikai, although it might come down to senshuraku. Kotoryu also started well last basho, 6-1, but only finished 8-7, so let's keep watching him.
Doitsuyama 1,259 Posted March 11, 2003 Here you can see in detail how Kyokutenho won against Asashoryu. It was really a perfect kakenage!
