Kaikitsune Makoto 210 Posted April 6, 2003 There was a mini-tournament in Osaka today. Kaio beat Tochiazuma in semifinal and Dejima beat Asashoryu. In the final Kaio beat Dejima and acclaimed 3 million yen as prize money. Musashimaru didn't take part in bouts but performed dohyo-iri. More details most likely tomorrow. He beat Dejima easily with yorikiri in the final with yorikiri and seems determined to write off the Haru disappointment... Tochiazuma has started keiko against sekitori. 10 training bouts. Kaikitsune Makoto 210 Posted April 7, 2003 Some more details of makuuchi bouts concerning Kaio who said the following after notching up this unofficial basho yusho (translation by Amanogawa): "I was feeling dump and so irritated after the Haru basho [especially after *that* match against Kotomitsuki.... ], and I was feeling as if I got Makekoshi in spite of 10-5 actually. So my mind was set [ to go for the yusho for this tournament ] to make a clear break for that miserable woes inside me." Short descriptions of some bouts (abstracts from prominent JML human's descriptions): Dejima-Chiyotaikai was a tsuki battle where Dejima was stronger. Oshidashi Kaio-Miyabiyama included businesslike ottsuke from Kaio and grip searching which eventually gave him right hand grip on the front of mawashi and Miya was bulldozed out. Dejima-Asashoryu: Shoryu did some sort of a jump at the tachi-ai which Dejima survived and attacked with nodowa, then turned it into hatakikomi. Kaio-Tochiazuma: Azuma started well and moved enthusiastically and smelled the air. No success in moving Kaio who grasped his arm from low and got right hand on the front of mawashi and yorikiried Azuma out. Kaio-Dejima: Morozashi for Kaio. Never overunderestimate Gokenzan! Yubiquitoyama 4 Posted April 7, 2003 Hmm..Tochiazuma has a tendency to do very well in training and then do much worse in honbasho sometimes. Good example is his total domination over Miyabiyama in training but in honbasho Miya has beaten his convincingly twice in a row now. Maybe Azuma is like Asashoryu and puts everything in every training bout whereas guys like Miya train hard BUT do not care for winning that much.It is easy to see how determined Miya is against high caliber opponents in honbasho and dare I guess his training bout determination lacks that a lot...Kaio used to show some symptoms of being yokozuna in training only to falter in honbasho but not for a long time anymore.
