Trip to Japan?

Recommended Posts

Any of you boys and girls out there got any plans to make a trip to Japan to watch any tournaments this coming year (2004) or the next?

Well, I have plans, sure... but looks like I can't afford it for a good number of years. But one day...

Financially speaking a trip to Japan will always be difficult for any normal human being.

However, to any contemplating it I'd say - worry not too much. Places can be found for about 3000 yen per day, places to eat are not as expensive as travel magazines and TV shows would have you believe and travel around Tokyo is not that expensive at all (inter-city is though). Know the people, ask the questions and you will get pleasant answers. Travel agents - limit their use to your flight purchase only and you'll be most surprised.

Also, Finland - a popular route from Jpn to the EU and one of the cheaper routes (same both ways?) Austrian stopovers and those via Singapore too are always cheaper than direct.

When you know - you'll have at least one contact in Tokyo.

Good old ANR ;-)

Any rich people out there who can afford to pay for us all to meet up in Japan for the next basho?

Unlikely but no less likely than British Eurosport showing it again-SIGHHHHHH!

I'm in Japan right now, actually. It isn't as expensive as one might think. Unless you live in Tokyo, that is.

I am going to try and get to tokyo, to see a day or two of the upcoming basho. If not, I am going to try to get to see some sumo in Osaka, next time I come back.

I have a house here in the country, about 1.5 hours by car from osaka. any sumo fans from around the world are welcome to come and stay.... as long as you can find your way to Hikone, in Shiga prefecture, and as long as I am in town.

Oh, yeah. it's not a large house, so only two or three at a time...haha

Expense comment perfect Iwagakki-san. As I said elsewhere I think - all travel agents and tours WILL push prices up. A bit of looking around and common sense is all that is needed to keep things cheap. :-D

On your going in January - 11th or 18th? (both are Sundays) If so and you feel like a meet up for a pint (Enjoying a beer...) during the day let me know as I have tickets for both those days.

And to anybody else making the long trip - if you let ANR know in advance you'll have at least one guided tour of Tokyo if you want / need it - of course including the Ryogoku area / sumo museum.

Keiko visit a possibility too depending on timings.

Keep this in mind one and all.

I might be there in May.....couldn't get enough time off of work for New Year's (Punk rocker...)

Either way, I'll be over there at some point, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it to a basho, especially since my father-in-law's corporation didn't renew their box seats this year (quick Charlton Heston impression: Damn the recession, damn it all the hell! And those dirty apes too! )

Taka-san,

worry not even if your father-in-law's Co didn't renew the box seats. The kind of seats a Corp hold are out of my league usually but they are not that difficult to buy if you are in town.

A little further back where Adachinoryu and the other paupers sit are fine too - still available now for Jan.

Worry not.
