Kintamayama 47,178 Posted December 12, 2003 (edited) Houchi Shinbun picked its " 7 Sportsmen of the Year". It is a readers' poll. Takamisakari won it in the Sumo category.. He gets a million yen and a year's worth of gas (for the car, for the car..), as if he can drive.. He posed for them with his robot keshomawashi, but guess what? He forgot to take off his glasses.. It's this loveable character of his that makes him popular more than the current Yokozuna and Ozekis. After morning keiko at Azumazeki, he was told of his prize. "Me? I stand out like a sore thumb on this list!", he marveled. Past rikishi who have won this prize were mostly Yokozuna/Ozeki, starting with Wajima. The only non Y/O was Takahanada, who won it in 1991/1992 as a Sekiwake. So, being a Komusubi (for another 10 days..), Takamisakari is the lowest ranking rikishi ever to win this prize. Asashouryuu, who won the prize last year, said "If winning 3 yushos isn't enough to get the prize, then hats off to Takamisakari!! Great!!" He had a great year, reaching a high in Nagoya where he beat both Yokozuna. "This is the first time I had a full year in Makuuchi, and I'm really thrilled about that..", he said. There are voices in the Sumo world that say he's out of line, or getting more honors than his relatively low rank deserves, but sometimes the backing of fans is worth a couple of victories indeed. charliki 16 Posted December 14, 2003 (edited) Did he choose this (ugly) mawashi (Sign of disapproval) because Japanese call him also robocop? Edited December 14, 2003 by charliki
Naifuzan 1 Posted December 14, 2003 Did he choose this (ugly) mawashi (Sign of disapproval) because Japanese call him also robocop? Yes that's probably the reason. Apparently he's become a bit obsessed with robots and the idea of being one. Ayway, this kesho mawashi is still a lot better than the one he has on the kyokai site (Clapping wildly...)
