QttP 0 Posted March 15, 2003 I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he has a real injury, that he has been struggling to fight despite the injury, and can't do it anymore.
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted March 15, 2003 Are there famous cases in the past of rikishi faking an injury and withdrawing from the basho? I mean real cases where someone admitted it later, not just suspected fake injuries?
Kaikitsune Makoto 210 Posted March 15, 2003 Kyodo news reports the following: Ozeki Musoyama endanger of losing rank in May Ozeki Musoyama, who pulled out of the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament with a dislocated shoulder Saturday, will put his rank on the line at the summer meet in May as his injury was not officially recognized. The sumo deliberation council said that Musoyama, who injured his left shoulder in a loss on Friday, suffered an old injury and will therefore have to win at least eight bouts when he returns for the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. The 31-year-old Musashigawa stable grappler is expected to be out of action for about two months. He lost his first four bouts at the ongoing 15-day tourney and appeared hopelessly out of form. Musoyama sustained the injury after crashing to his fifth defeat in six days against No. 2 maegashira Tochinonada on Friday. He finishes the meet with a 1-6 record with eight rest days after a default to rank-and-filer Kaiho on Saturday. ------------ So no kosho. Now he should skip training for at least 1 month to show he is indeed injured....what a tragicomic scenario it would be if now he wouldn't after all be injured and therefore that 2 months to recovery would sort of force him to train secretly and avoid reporters at Musashigawa-beya keiko or jungyo etc. :-( Well I really don't believe he faked it. Might have exaggerated the gestures of pain and discomfort but that there wouldn't have been injury at all...no way. Too many variables against that absurd scenario. As far as I understood from the comments of Musashigawa (on the sumo mailing list), Musoyama's shoulder had popped out and jumped back into place. It does seem like something anyone with a cronically sore shoulder could say, when so disgusted with himself as Musoyama would have been yesterday... But, maybe he really did become more injured than before. It will be quite difficult to be sure either way. I still hope that he can regain confidence and or health so he can manage to stay Ozeki in May instead.
QttP 0 Posted March 15, 2003 Well. As far as I understood from the comments of Musashigawa (on the sumo mailing list), Musoyama's shoulder had popped out and jumped back into place. Ouch. That is an unpleasant experience. It happened to me after I did Ipponzeoi on one of my classmates. I was afraid he's gonna fall hard, so I stopped the throw half the way into it, and he fell on my shoulder. Yes, it did pop back into its proper place 5 seconds afterwards, but those were painful 5 seconds, and it still hurts sometimes when I stretch it. Which reminds me that I'd like to go Kyujo too, and apply for Kosho so that I don't have to participate in Natsu, and still get to retain my Ozeki status. Oh wait, I forgot. I am East Yokozuna. I can just ditch 7 straight tournaments, and they won't be able to do anything except move me to West Yokozuna. :-(
