Kintamayama 47,171 Posted October 31, 2003 (edited) Wakanosato has upped the pace of his preparations to attain the Ozeki rank. He needs 12 wins, as we all know. We also know he's never had more than 11 in a basho. He was doing his usual keiko, when suddenly, Naruto Oyakata produced a skipping rope, and asked Wakanosato to start jumping. This is good for concentration and pure physical strength. That 159 kilo (350 lbs., 25 stone) frame jumping up and down made the dohyo shake.. Some young rikishi held the rope at both sides and turned it, (like when we were kids, though it was a "girl" thing mostly..) and Wakanosato, Takanowaka (156 kilo, 344 lbs., 24.5 stone), and even the 169 kilo (372 lbs., 26.5 stone) Takanotsuru had a go. "Thud, thud", went the building. This made for a total mood change for the better at keiko. The over 150 kilo Sekitori unanimously said that this was "difficult business". But, some of them managed to do 30 straight. Wow. That IS impressive, if I may add my personal take here.. Naruto Oyakata: "The fact that these guys , who are close to triple the weight of an average person, can do this, is because they have a great sense of balance, they are quick-witted, and they are strong physically," he said, as his Sekitori stood around, out of breath. " No person weighing 50 kilos can hold an additional 100 kilos and do what you just did. You guys are no regular fatsos (debu)", he added. He then proceeded to add a 5 kilo dumbbell in Wakanosato's hand, making him do an additional 25 skips. "I'd like them to build their confidence, by making them realize that their physical strength and balance are exceptional. Suriashi and the rest are important, but to forge their strength, it's important that they have all kinds of training as well", he added further. After the skipping, Wakanosato's pulse was taken. It was 140 before, and 180 after. "I think this diversity of training technique is great. We do all kinds of sports. We're not just lying around getting fat. I haven't skipped rope in quite a while", said Wakanosato. His fighting spirit is very high, aiming for that Ozeki berth. After the rope skipping, he did an additional 500 squats to strengthen his lower body. He repeatedly did motions beneficial for his spinal column's strength and mobility. Kaiktsune-zeki can no doubt augment this.. Wakanosato jumps, Takanotsuru watches. I wonder if there was a song to go with it.. Kintamayama 47,171 Posted October 31, 2003 You really make Kintamayama sound ancient (Applauding...) I'm pretty sure there are older people alive and about ;-) I am older than the sea. I saw Wakanohana I fight in real time.
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted October 31, 2003 :-D Great spectacle! ;-) So is your avatar, which briefly distracts me at least once a day. (In a good way) Jumping rope is tough. My gym instructor does it for 15 minutes in a row BEFORE our class, to warm up. Then again, he's a fitness freak, does triathlons, trains all day, etc. (Applauding...) Manekineko 200 Posted October 31, 2003 Cummulative answer. You cannot comprehend the power of the... eh... East Horse Chestnut... :-) I can only second Zenji-zeki's reaction, without that f. before funny tho... I am a lady. (Giggling...) I am older than the sea. I saw Wakanohana I fight in real time. Which Wakanohana? Man, this makes *me* feel old... but then tominishiki-zeki can make anyone feel old. :-( So is your avatar, which briefly distracts me at least once a day. (In a good way) My pleasure. :-P Tho' I can't compete with Zenji-zeki's attention-drawing pearls of avatars. (Applauding...)
