Kuroyama 715 Posted February 10, 2008 Well, if no one has bought the web space yet, I'll gladly offer mine. It's already paid for for the next two years, and not really being used (one of those great ideas that never came to fruition...). Anyway, it's only 15GB but unlimited transfer, and the domain could always be transferred at some later time. If someone wants to register the domain I can transfer it, or I can register it myself. Also, I can use fantastico to install either TikiWiki or PhpWiki, or a variety of CMSs (Mambo, Joomla, etc), and I'm sure I can manage to install something else (i.e. MediaWiki) if it is chosen.Anyway, no sense in spending money that doesn't need to be spent. If this seems reasonable, I can get it set up this weekend. Unfortunately, I did it already before I saw this reply. I'd been set to do it for a few weeks and was just waiting for an opportune moment, so I didn't check here first.

I don't know how much time I'll have to play the admin in the long run, so it's probably better for the long-run admin to be in charge sooner rather than later. I just thought it would be a pretty convenient way to get started without spending too money much up front.

Asameshimae 220 Posted July 10, 2009 "It's alive!" Um, Doctor? The patient is well, er.... Don't know if I am opening worm cans, but was there ever talk here of why this project never got on it's feet? A search produced nada.
Kuroyama 715 Posted July 11, 2009 (edited) "It's alive!"Um, Doctor? The patient is well, er.... Don't know if I am opening worm cans, but was there ever talk here of why this project never got on it's feet? A search produced nada. Largely because, as I feared, I had little time or energy to promote it once I set it up. If anyone would like to take the whole thing over, they'd be more than welcome. I had imported a great deal of material from the Sumo articles on Wikipedia, and also from template space there (much of it no doubt irrelevant) which formed at least something of a foundation, but there was never much in the way of activity. And since I no longer participate at Wikipedia, I don't have much "cred" anymore for inviting people in. I had developed some of the templates used in the Sumo articles there, and was told recently on being asked to modify one of them -- something I never got to -- that the English Wikipedia Sumo community is pretty healthy, with the Japanese Wikipedia even borrowing some of our formats and such. Edit: Hmm... There *are* articles there, but some surprising ones are missing. It may be that I imported a less complete set of them than I had imagined. Kimyouzan 2 Posted July 14, 2009 I don't know what I could offer to such a wiki/site, but I do have a few good images that are owned by me (some of which I have posted on the forum before) that I would gladly contribute.
Manekineko 200 Posted July 14, 2009 I'll repeat what I said when this topic was first mentioned (I'm to lazy to search for it): a project like this needs a manager/editor, someone who will hound people to submit articles and coordinate the efforts. It is a great idea, but it lacks those all important 99% perspiration to make it work.
Jakusotsu 6,402 Posted July 14, 2009 Or to put it another way: "nice to have" is not necessarily "nice to do".

It is a great idea, but it lacks those all important 99% perspiration to make it work. A wiki by its nature should need little in the way of coordination or editing. I've seen wikis dedicated to information about obscure MMORPGs take off in a matter of months. But granted such may be necessary in this case -- I'm essentially willing to handle the technical end of it, hosting, setup, and site administration, but I have little energy for writing articles and I'm not a "leader" type who could be very successful at organizing a larger-scale effort.
