My understanding is that makushita 15 tsukedashi rikishi is automatically promoted to juryo in case of 7-0. All rikishi higher than Mk15 tsukedashi rank are also automatically promoted in case of 7-0. However, I am not 100% sure about if rikishi loses at play-off after a 7-0, then is the promotion still always guaranteed? I would think so but wiser men/women can clarify!

I have never seen any obvious difference between yusho winning rikishi and playoff losing rikishi at 7-0, to the extent that I'm willing to say there is no difference. Therefore I'm quite certain Uchida would be promoted to Juryo with 7-0 although as yet we have not actually seen if this new Ms15Td position is treated as other ranks in Ms top-15 (being ensured of Juryo promotion with 7-0).

Why Uchida starts his carreer so high ( makushita 15 tsukedashi ). I think that Musoyama or Hayateumi ( ex-universitary champions ) didn't start so high?

This is part of the Kyokai's new rules regarding college rikishi. Earlier the amateur results needed to start at Makushita Tsukedashi level were lower than now, and those who got the nod was started as Ms60Td, at the bottom of the Makushita banzuke. It has been felt by some though that the system should be revised, supposedly because there was too many college rikishi who hadn't felt the pressure of working their way up the banzuke. Since the middle of 2001 therefore, only those with outstanding amateur records (the exact criteria should be found somewhere in the mailinglist archives at banzuke.com I think) can start in Makushita, and is then started at Ms15Td. Up to now, Kakizoe (actually kyujo in his initial basho), Narita (currently Juryo Takekaze), Asamiyoshi and Uchida have gotten that priviledge, while other college sumo players have been forced to start at the bottom, in Maezumo.

Because it's a relatively new rule. Before that, the college champions started off at Makushita 60 Tsukedashi.

I think Asamiyoshi was the first in March 2002.

I agree. I think that is PRECISELY the reason that the tsukedashi is now at 15, and not, say, 34 or 26..I think the 15 spot is no coincidence.

I'd have to say that I find it a little tough that one has to be a college grand champion to get this privilege... I for one would argue that it is way too harsh for other good college rikishi who have been competing and winning for years to go to Mae-zumo with the 14-year olds.  There really oughta be a secondary Tsukedashi system, where others who are not champions but really consistent winners in college can start at, say, Sandanme 15, and ones who are solid college rikishi with generally winning records maybe start at Jonidan 15.  Would seem a little more fair than what they have now, IMHO.  No imagination! :)
