    Hakuhou's quest for 70

Hakuhou met the statue that was modeled after him today. The statue is of a Buddhist deity called Virupaksa (he sure paksa punch?). It's in Kumamoto at the Rengein Tanjoji. He then participated in some children's sumo and was "thrown down" by some six graders, much to the enjoyment of the audience.

    Asashouryuu preparations- Haru 2009

As a bit of a counterpoint to the Fan-taro silliness... Asashoryu has been invited to serve as the model for part of a "four heavenly kings" Buddhist statue. The Southern gate of the Rengein Tanjoji temple in Tamana-shi, Kumamoto prefecture (which the statue is going to adorn) is currently under reconstruction for an opening in 2011, having burned down back in the late 16th century. Asashoryu has previously attended this temple's fall festival four times and done a ceremonial dohyo-iri on those occasions, and Kyoto-based sculptor Tsukumo Imamura has asked him to come by on the 5th for modelling photography and such. Imamura has been busy working on the 4-meter high four kings statue since 2007; two are done and the third king is currently in production, modelled after Hakuho. (Apropos using Asashoryu as the model, Imamura commented 「朝青龍関の強さや躍動感を像に生かしたい」 which I'm not even going to try to translate/mangle...)

    Asashouryuu visits temple-dohyo-iri

Rengein Tanjouji Temple is the birth place of Kouen Daibosatsu, the founder of Shingen Buddhism, It was built by Tairano Shigemori (in the Heike Era) in 1175 and located in Tamana City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Its bell is said to be the world largest (with diameter of 3 meters). It is the only temple in Kyushu where a yokozuna does the dohyo-iri usually in their Fall Festivel which is going on right now. And also it's known to have your one wish come true if you pray in the inner chamber. Asashoryu was seen to have done this so all you Kaiou fans might as well give up now. (In love...)
