Zentoryu 154 Posted April 17, 2003 (edited) Why did Takamisakari win a prize, when he barely made KK and his only major win was against Musoyama who only scraped one win himself? Was it a mistake? I think maybe you might be confusing the Shukon-sho with the Gino-sho. The Shukon-sho is awarder based on the criteria you point out above. The gino-sho is another matter. I'd hardly call his receiving the Gino-sho a mistake. He went 8-7 in the Maegashira meat grinder (M1 to M5), that's not bad. The prize he won was for technique, and technique was something he showed brilliantly throughout the basho. He showed amazingly strong belt-sumo and in my opinion was certainly deserving of the award. In fact, there probably would have been an outcry if he didn't win it. Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted April 17, 2003 I believe you need to have KK to get the gino-sho as well. Takamisakari did barely meet this requirement at 8-7. But as you said, 8-7 as M2 is not bad at all; sometimes good enough to get into sanyaku if the M1s and komosubi do badly. This page shows some interesting gino-sho statistics. I actually had to go back and look who Tsurugamine was, and lo and behold it's Terao's father (Eating...) (Enjoying a beer...) What a small world and an exciting little discovery for me. As for Takamisakari's performance in haru basho, I think the five consecutive yorikiri were admired by the kyokai, coming in days 10-14, and clinched the gino-sho for him. Fujisan 533 Posted April 18, 2003 Im not complaining Zento,I am a big Robocop fan and he was on my Rotosumo team but it just seemed strange.
Zenjimoto 40 Posted April 18, 2003 I'd generally have to agree, though, that I sometimes find the sansho awards strange, not so much for who gets them, but who doesn't. A most glaring example was the lack of a Kanto-sho for Tochinonada at the Hatsu Basho... fighting back from a 0-5 to achieve a 10-5 record in my opinion embodies "fighting spirit" like nothing else... go figure... I also don't know why there wasn't a Shukun-sho at the Haru Basho... I can think of a pretty darn good candidate :) Cheers Zenjimoto
QttP 0 Posted April 18, 2003 I also don't know why there wasn't a Shukun-sho at the Haru Basho... I can think of a pretty darn good candidate :) Wakanosato. He did beat all 3 ozeki, including the eventual winner, he beat Mickey and Nami and Nada (ending Nada's 12 win streak). But then again, he went 5-2 against sanyaku and 4-4 against Maegashira. He lost to Wakanoyama and Kotonowaka, and managed only 9 wins overall. That could be the reason not to give the prize to him. If they didn't give it to him after Nagoya (11-4, including wins over Maru and Shoryu), they weren't going to give it now. Tamanoshima also pretty much lost his chance for shukun-sho with the 5 loss streak in the second weak. Nada's 11 straight wins in Hatsu... Maybe deserved a prize too. If there was a "longest winning streak" prize, he'd get it. (Enjoying a beer...)
Gernobono 467 Posted April 22, 2003 @zenjimoto i guess tochinonada did not get a sansho because of the torikumi...after starting 0-5 he got "worse" opponents....ending up 10-5 after a 5-0 start ist quite harder to achieve as you are quiet surely up against lower sanyaku opponents after starting well.....just look at kotoryus reverse result at haru basho 5-10 after a 5-0 start.... Stop that! Nada went 11-4 after 0-4, not 10-5 after 0-5! Don't give him extra losses! >(Laughing...)

I don't agree 100%. This is because torikumi is adjusted all the time, not just after the first five days. So after five more wins the opponents will become harder again, and after five losses the opponents become easier again. (Laughing...)
Fujisan 533 Posted April 24, 2003 Actually Zenji,Tourney prize post 1 was regarding Tochinonadas bum deal at the last basho,so I agree.
