Gospodin 240 Posted June 14 That would surprise me, tbh. Only rikishi sitting ringside can call one. I don´t know if it was Hakuho, but there were a few instances where rikishi unusually "complained" to the shimpan (looks, gestures).
Katooshu 3,416 Posted June 14 (edited) Yes, Hakuho tried to call a monoii on his match vs Yoshikaze. Stood outside the dohyo for about a minute saying stuff to the shimpan before finally climbing back up, bowing, and leaving. And no I'm not trying to hijack the thread with Hakuho negativity, but it was brought up. Edited June 14 by Katooshu
Gospodin 240 Posted June 14 Thanks, Katooshu. I don´t see any negativity in your response. To me it just shows what a, say, colorful character he was.
ryafuji 823 Posted June 15 (edited) I think you are conflating two different incidents. Hakuho called for a monoii while sitting ringside at a bout between Kakuryu and Goeido in May 2014. In the Yoshikaze situation, he wasn't calling for a monoii so much as saying that it was a matta and the bout never actually started. Katooshu 3,416 Posted June 15 (edited) I don't think there's conflation - I'm aware those were different incidents. Following his bout with Yoshikaze, he raised his hand as shimpan do when a matta is called, and was trying to talk to them. Clearly he wanted a review or overturning of the call the gyoji made. I would say that falls very close to him trying to call a monoii on the match. I remember watching this the next day on Kinta's digest. Maybe the most surreal thing I've seen in sumo! That would have been ultimate chuzpe, because if, he was clearly the culprit.
