Maybe because a member is an ex-rikishi

Ex-Oruri, Saito Takuya for 3 years now works at the PC as administrative scrivener (wearing the official badge), concerned with government administration office documents.

Saito specializes on helping restaurants with official documents, e.g. to apply for subsidiary aid as sales are down in Corona times. His right "gyoza" ear is a sign of his rikishi days, but surprisingly few people notice his past history: "My weight is down about 60kg from the 165kg when active."

After being a rikishi for 4 years he made it to makushita, in Kyushu 2010 when thrown off the dohyo, his ACL snapped and his meniscus was damaged. He was brought to a hospital and immediately had surgery, but it took him a year to return. He changed his shikona from Saito to Oruri, but couldn't do sumo like before, having constant fear of re-injury: "After a loss rather than frustration I felt relief. Without frustration you can't get stronger anymore. I decided to retire."

"In the job interview at one company I heard: 'No experience in work society, just got the driver's license, can't use the PC - the 3 conditions  combined.' and was rejected. With the record as ex-rikishi comes the stigma of not being able to work. I realized that I had been protected by the oyakata and okamisan. The necessities of life were guaranteed, if something occurs they take care. What seemed a harsh environment had been one to be thankful for."

After that he took PC lessons for 3 months and gained a qualification. He got work through a temporary staff recruitment agency for the construction business, working at the construction site of a highway in Hyogo pref. "I had no knowledge of the construction industry and without understanding what the people around me were saying, I was of no use, there was a constant feeling of inferiority. The urge to be able to work self-confident became ever stronger."

With some qualification he would find some starting point, with that thought he searched the net and found the term 行政書士 "administrative scrivener". "I had no idea what that occupation was and on top of that, had no legal knowledge. But checking it I found that it had connections to the construction business and I could make use of the experience on site. I wanted to change myself. I even felt that if I couldn't get that qualification, my life might be over."

Half a year after finding a job he started to go to classes at a vocational school, another half year later he quit the job to concentrate on learning, while doing part time jobs.

The exam was once a year, with passing rate of 10%. At the 3rd attempt he made it in January, 4 years after intai. He opened an office in Osaka on August 2018, but just with a qualification, work wouldn't come rushing in, competition was hard. "The range of branches is wide, 'can do everything'  comes with 'can't do anything'. I had to specialize." He focused on the restaurant sector, where many ex-rikishi start a business.

"In June international standards for food hygiene became obligatory, many shop operators have to file documents." "Now with Corona there are tough times for the restaurant industry, I want to support those who hold on. I believe that after it's over, more will think about opening a shop."

"A lot of rikishi after intai start in the restaurant business. When opening a shop, a lot of permits and licensees are necessary. I though I can help there. I had a hard time after retiring, I want to become someone to help soften other's hardships there."

New sponsor is LDH JAPAN, a management agency for performers like the group EXILE - they put kensho on bouts of Kotonowaka (3 on day 1) and others o from maybe the Moderna mRNA college connection ldh.co.jp/news/detail.php?newsid=0000044287

- the NSK is top member no.1 o

so Moderna will likely put kensho on some of his bouts as well

They ran in high speed short groups and started at once. Abema showed not all of it - checking NHK is tedious, but usually they also show something else then. It looked like the video went fast forward - the yobidashi usually parade slowly to really show the sponsor banners, here they didn't get much for their money.

Day 1 had the most ever kensho on one day so far, 198, replacing this year Natsu with 190. http://www.sanspo.com/article/20230910-GKTP7RZPK5O3XFBJ4KEC5K4Q24/

Since day 15 always is the one with the most, we'll likely see the 200 reached this basho. We are in commercial times, kensho number kept going up in recent years, then Corona stopped it, but now we're back on track.

3 ozeki in a row brought Hokutofuji to the top (alone thanks to the Morinaga-sho today) - has to be a first for him - and not once he had the biggest pack in the last bout. He won't get a chance at that again, so he'll keep dropping down from now on. Tobizaru really cashed in - 40 today in his 2nd try at the biggest pack - he may get one more chance, they seem to prefer to put him in the last bout against an ozeki - maybe on day 5.

LDH's 3 were on Takakeisho-Asanoyama, Moderna on Endo-Midorifuji. Daieisho got the Morinaga-sho, he had 4 from the Shodai win, today there were 7 in all on the bout, also 2 Nagatanien kensho. Housing company Tama Home seems to be a bigger kensho sponsor than Nagatanien now, Nagatanien kensho always come first in the parade, then Tama Home - 1 to 5 kensho on the last 5 bouts, 1 for the sekiwake bouts, 5 for the last bout, at least 2 on the other ozeki bouts, usually more

LDH and Moderna (RNA) were on the last bout, Abi-Takakeisho, as was the Morinaga-sho - kensho with romaji abbreviations are easy to spot in the list. A personal sponsor for Takayasu is MTX articular clinic. Another sponsor with multiple fix rikishi is Nippon Express/NX Group: Takakeisho and Takanosho, Kirishima - and already a personal sponsor for Gonoyama.

Shodai collected the Morinaga-sho from the Takakeisho win, but he's not in the rankings with it: the kensho surge has the lower end at 40 already on day 7 - Shodai had a bunch of kensho from Hoshoryu and 2 from Ura, who is down to 1 personal kensho a day - the other apparently was the 1 Shodai has fix. Nishikigi's win over Hoshoryu for the 4th (including a win over Asanoyama) also was not enough for the rankings. LDH was on Takanosho-Onosho, Moderna on Endo-Hiradoumi.

LDH on Atamifuji-Tobizaru and also the Morinaga-sho, but he likely won't make it to the rankings, he has no personal kensho and didn't get much early on (I think I'll have to count his kensho), since day 11 he has 2 Nagatanien kensho as well (in for Terunofuji) - Moderna on Abi-Ura.

Atamifuji had 29 in the first 11 days (2,,1,1,,7,2,3,,4+1,7+1) - several first bouts, the Mitakeumi pack - tomorrow again only 5: the lower end will likely be above 70 this basho, unless he gets Takakeisho in the final bout, he can't reach that.

The surge in kensho may also be caused by the Sanctuary hype (sumo content is now tagged with/equalled to Sanctuary fiction). o

That would have to be Day 14 though, right?  I can see it happening Day 13 (breaking up the normal Takakeisho-Hoshoryu) or Day 15 (as a last resort call-up), but Day 14 (normal plan would be Daieisho) seems a stretch.  Still could happen though.

I guess Atamifuji gets Takakeisho on day 13, today komusubi, tomorrow sekiwake, so ...

but yeah, Takakeisho is on schedule for the last bout on days 14 and 15, so I don't think a last bout will happen for Atamifuji - but they could of course pair him against Kirishima as well on day 13, and as really last resort then still Takakeisho and scrap more ozeki bouts

- I doubt anything like this will happen and he only gets Takakeisho

The Morinaga-sho on the Atamifuji bout of course, the 3 from LDH on Daieisho-Gonoyama, Moderna on Endo-Nishikifuji. Daieisho with the exceptionally large pack now made it into the rankings. Nagatanien has a different approach this basho, still only 2 each on the 2 they are regularly supporting, but after now Atamifuji since today also 2 each on Takayasu and on important bouts, today Wakamotoharu-Tsurugisho, tomorrow the 2 ozeki bouts.

The Morinaga-sho on Hoshoryu-Takakeisho, LDH on Takayasu-Tobizaru, Moderna on Atamifuji-Abi. Kirishima still has the chance to finish top - Hoshoryu is fix for no.  3 - with 58 the biggest pack this basho that he got, likely the day 1 most ever kensho for a day got surpassed as well - and for sure again tomorrow, day 15 always has the most. Daieisho can get over 100 - the number of rikishi over 100  is definitely a first, as is the lower end over 80 - I don't think anybody else can still get over 80, so Takayasu is in. Atamifuji added 5 today.

Most kensho ever for a day of course today, 204, first time over 200. The last bout has 58 again, but this time proper (without the Morinaga-sho).

And no surprise: the basho had the most kensho ever, 2325, most so far was Aki 2018 with 2160, so by quite a margin.

2154 kensho have been applied for this basho, back to figures like Aki 2019. Top in personal kensho are Takakeisho, Kirishima and still 3rd Mitakeumi (and not Hoshoryu) http://www.sanspo.com/article/20230908-3M6OJ5L6VJL5JG5SD7Q4MYDP4I/

And without kyujo cancel and increasing interest during the basho, the initial figure has been surpassed by an unprecedented margin as well

The kensho only on ex- today and nearly unreadable: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F6uTwdTbMAAYKsN.jpg:large

They reposted the torikumi with the proper kensho list

Morinaga of course on Asanoyama-Atamifuji, LDH in the end on Kotonowaka again, Moderna on Midorifuji.

Even though Takakeisho won as well, Kirishima got to the top with the joint biggest pack of the basho with 58 today, after also getting the 3rd biggest pack on day 1 - but I'm sure there never has been such a small difference between 1st and 2nd place. The last 5 in the final rankings all lost today and we have in the end 7 over 100.
