School kesho mawashi

I'll try to make this a collection of all the standard (and not so standard) kesho mawashi a (new) sekitori gets from his old school(s). University, high, sometimes middle school and maybe even primary school, usually showing the school emblem, the school color and often some school motto.

I start with high school and below, and with the best known.

Saitama Sakae high (and middle school) is the top sumo high school and the standard kesho mawashi they give for juryo promotion is the best known.

Recently Kotoshoho got his, and a bit earlier Kotonowaka

They  have another one though, for ozeki promotion. Goeido and Takakeisho got that, color free to chose by the ozeki.

Mitakeumi has one from his local middle school

Another one with a (not purely) middle school kesho mawashi is Takahanada - Meidai Nakano middle and high school, but he left after middle school. Waka should have one, too.

I guess no rikishi left Saitama Sakae after middle school to join at once.

The kesho mawashi from the other top sumo high school, Tottori Johoku, are not that easy to spot, they share only the sumo club motto and the donor name below

Other high schools - the kesho mawashi are mostly donated rather by the school alumni associations than the schools

AFAIK, Enho has kesho mawashi from his university almamater, Kanazawa Gakuin University.

On to universities, many in their emblem simply have the kanji for "university", 大学, written old style

Most prominent is of course Nichidai - a quite recent awardee was Tobizaru (3 years ago) o

When he was new juryo, already Kakizoe and Yoshikaze were in makuuchi with the same, and for some reason they thought it boring to give it again and he got another type instead, with the mascot lion symbol of the corporate body, recently awarded to only Nittai-dai affiliated high school graduate Hoshoryu for juryo promotion

After Myogiryu got his 2nd, others wanted a 2nd for sanyaku promotion as well, Chiyotairyu came and got some consolation present, as did Yoshikaze. Others from Nittaidai are e.g. Higonojo, Chiyonoumi, Tomokaze and Hokutofuji. o

Another university affiliated high school: Aikodai (Aichi Institute of Technology) Meiden high school.  Asanowaka and Buyuzan (Yamawake, 2nd from the right) were from that high school, and as oyakata returned them to it, to go on display.

It will be interesting to know if certain rikishi won't get a kesho-mawashi from their university because they joined the wrong heya. There was talk that Nakamura won't get one from Nittaidai should he join Miyagino-beya instead of a related heya like Naruto or Nishonoseki and now an article that doubts if Kawazoe will get one from Nichidai because he joined Miyagino instead of Kise- or Oitekaze-beya, which the school people wanted him to join. o

Similar to sekitori who marry the wrong wife, lose the koenkai support and get no kabu as a result.

Unfortunately not presented kesho-mawashi won't get a direct article if it happens, we only may notice after a while that the rikishi never uses a kesho mawashi from his school - or a tabloid mentions it in connection with other cases.

Well, that seems a bit spiteful. Kawazoe and especially Nakamura were great representatives of their school's programs in college and will probably continue to reflect positively on them, with much bigger profiles, in ozumo. As much as I'm a Naruto beya fan, if I were a superstar prospect I wouldn't want to join them either given their injury issues.

Satoyama yesterday donated his kesho mawashi back to Kagoshima commercial high school

School emblem on a background in the school color, the name of the school as the donor below 鹿児島商業高等学校. He received it for juryo promotion Hatsu 2006. The alumni association, ex-members of the sumo club and teachers had contributed the sum of 1.08 million yen to make it. It is planned to have it on display at the school.

With the school symbol and 不撓不屈 futo-fukutsu, from 不撓不屈 の精神 indomitable spirit, which Takanohana used in his acceptance phrase for yokozuna promotion. Definitely the motto of the sumo club, the school has another slogan - the article is behind the paywall, but that was the title of a feature about the club o. Tokihayate now already has 5 kesho mawashi for the Natsu basho sekitori debut. o

Apparently no longer free, the 2 above are the standard now, ozeki color is black or purple, and Kotonowaka as the 3rd ozeki from Saitama Sakae high requested black like Goeido, to have two different ones at the dohyo-iri. He got the certificate for it at the party yesterday to celebrate the 17 national yusho for the school this school-year, including the interhigh win of the sumo club.

The 2 Japanese ozeki and 7 other sekitori and 2 oyakata who graduated from Saitama Sakae were there

The name to added to the embroidery is Kotozakura, and the akeni in which the kesho mawashi is delivered and transported already has Kotozakura on it, because that can't be changed like the embroidery

A rare middle school kesho mawashi - actually the same as that of the high school, but new juryo Otsuji joined after graduation from Hotoku gakuen middle school. I haven't seen one from the school yet.

Otsuji received it today at the school in Nishonomiya, Hyogo, accompanied by the oyakata, with shimekomi and akeni.

In the middle the school emblem, on the green school colour. The emblem is a sakura flower, with the kanji  実 in the middle: the school name originally was Hotoku jitsugyo (industrial-), the kanji means sincerity and stands for putting into practice (jissen), and on the request of Otsuji the kanji phrase 以徳報徳 itoku-hotoku was added, from the words of Ninomiya Sontoku, on whose teachings the school philosophy is based https://www.hotoku.ac.jp/about/education https://www.hotoku.or.jp/sontoku/ and which had a great impact on Otsuji at school.
