Seki-Toto/Quad/Oracle/Fantasy Sumo banzuke for Haru 2018 (+ invitation to play!)

Recommended Posts

Seki-Toto (play):

The yusho winner was finally a familiar name again (more on that in a bit), but the overall scoring posed one of the worse puzzles in recent banzuke-making memory. Altogether the makuuchi division averaged 7.9 wins for the second straight basho - on the nose, actually, with 332 wins by 42 players both times - but the distribution within the top division was entirely screwed up. The top 20 players (sanyaku and M1-4) averaged 8.95 - and the remaining 22 did 6.95, worse than juryo. :-S The KK/MK splits were 17/3 and 6/16, respectively.

I toyed with the idea of an outright scoring reduction, which would have been the first in quite some time (most recently for Nagoya 2015), but that would have only screwed up the lower half even further. So in the end it's the worst-looking solution I went with, in which I treated the records as they were, but waiving the requirement for 8-7's to not get demoted. Consequently three such players did get demoted. In general, if you're ranked M5 and above on this banzuke, your position will make a lot more sense if you consider your win count to have been reduced by 1.

Keeping sanyaku limited to 12 players proved difficult even with the implied scoring reduction, and I had to be harsh on one of two players. Kitakachiyama was marginally ahead by the numbers, with a 10-5 from M2w, but I ended up giving the last spot to Konosato (9-6 from M1e), largely because he had unluckily missed out on sanyaku already one basho back. By the same token I promoted DeRosa from komusubi to sekiwake despite the overall unimpressive 9-6 record (implied 8-7, of course), as he should have been sekiwake by rights already for Hatsu.

In happier news, we get to celebrate an ozeki promotion - Pandaazuma paced the field by two wins with a 13-2 yusho record to finally give me an opportunity to promote who has arguably been one of the top two Toto players for years. To wit, since starting his breakout all the way back in Aki 2013 (27 tournaments ago) he has posted: 1x 13-2 (this basho), 2x 12-3 (one of them also a yusho), 3x 11-4, 9x 10-5, 5x 9-6, 4x 8-7, 2x 7-8, and 1x 6-9 - for an average score of 9.5 wins. The relative lack of scores better than 10-5 has always been the killer as far as ozeki considerations went, and while the pure numbers are short even now (9 / 9 / 13), it is the third time in this long run of excellence that Pandaazuma has posted 31-in-3, and I'm not going to miss the chance now. Besides, what could be better than clinching promotion with a yusho?

The other top two player - yokozuna Norizo, of course - followed up on his Kyushu return to form with a second straight 11-4 record in Hatsu. Also 11-4 was ozeki Susanoo who easily escaped kadoban with that. ScreechingOwl went only 9-6 to end the very vague tsuna hopes after Kyushu's 11-4, and Gurowake found himself 5-10 to be the next kadoban ozeki.

Our other ozeki hopefuls prior to Hatsu basho went their separate ways. Flohru scored a 9-6 to put himself on 30 wins in the last three tournaments - not enough to merit consideration, especially as they weren't all in sanyaku anyway, but a great basis for a promotion run in Haru basho. (20 of those wins were in the last two basho.) Fujisan won't be having that opportunity now, as he went 5-10 and is leaving sanyaku again. The new top contender, however, is in fact Kaiomitsuki who has had consecutive 11-4 records, both while holding a sekiwake ranking.

After the joi mess the banzuke actually worked out surprisingly well, all the way down to the bottom of juryo.

Seki-Quadrumvirate (play):

Low Quad scores were the order of the day again in January, totalling 43.5% this time around. Unsurprisingly that means an extra win for everyone again, except the two ozeki (although it doesn't matter for them). The KK/MK split moves up from 11/29 to 20/20 in makuuchi (yay), and from 4/20 to 7/17 in juryo.

Both ScreechingOwl and Gurowake finished with just 6 wins, so that would have been a makekoshi even if they were eligible for the score adjustment. ScreechingOwl becomes soft kadoban for the first time since his repromotion four basho ago, while this has been Gurowake's second straight MK and being hard kadoban he's now on the brink of demotion.

Kuroimori scored a 9-6 as sekiwake, but prior records of 2x 8-7 have left him well short of promotion considerations for now. Norizo's even further off after just two 8-7's and Gernobono went makekoshi to leave sanyaku. It's gotten rather crowded at the third-highest rank anyway though as we're going to have no less than 6 sekiwake for Haru basho, among them yusho winner Choshu-yuki who would probably be ozeki now if she hadn't been 7-8 in Kyushu. Chishafuwaku has become the top promotion contender by the numbers following records of 11-4 and 10-5, although the M10 start to the run will be counting against him.

10 sanyaku in total after 8 in January, and a reasonably good-looking banzuke overall. A few 7-8's and kosho players moved up by one nominal spot in the low maegashira ranks, but accounting for the sanyaku expansion they've all been actually demoted.

Seki-Oracle (play):

Regular Oracle service was restored for the most part in January, with the high-ranked players dominating the competition. The yusho was won by Choshu-yuki who will now be challenging for the ultimate promotion in Haru basho, but fellow ozeki ScreechingOwl will have all eyes on his progress as well after taking the runner-up spot here. Yokozuna Norizo finished third, his best result since Kyushu 2016, and Pandaazuma rounded things out with a share of 6th place.

The revolving door between ozeki and sekiwake was also active again. In what seems to be becoming a recurring pattern, Gurowake finds himself demoted from the higher rank just two basho (but two makekoshi) after challenging for the big white rope. Meanwhile Asashosakari secured promotion after all, courtesy of this run:

2017.09 K2w 9-6
2017.11 Se 14-1 Y
2018.01 Se 10-5

Unlike two months ago there's nothing to quibble about the overall performance standard of the run now.

We have some interesting inhabitants of the komusubi rank this time: Sakura went 0-15 in her Oracle debut a year ago, but has stacked up 5 consecutive KK since then to move up from J14 to the titled ranks. Jejima wasn't new, but has also gone from makekoshi in deep juryo last Haru to 5 straight winning records and promotion to komusubi now.

Some harsh demotions occurred at the maegashira/juryo line this time as there were no less than five promotable records and a real dearth of candidates to send down.

Fantasy Sumo (play):

Hatsu was a rather forgettable FS basho for the makuuchi-ranked players, with one notable exception: Ozeki Pandaazuma scored 12 wins (before adjustments), three more than anybody else in the division managed to do. It was "only" good for a share of 5th place in the wacky overall competition, but it's easily enough to put him on another tsuna run.

Chisaiyama avoided the sophomore slump in his second ozeki appearance and achieved kachikoshi narrowly, while Taka and freshly promoted Asashosakari weren't so lucky and will have to contend against kadoban status for Haru basho.

As mentioned the results in the top division were sufficiently messed up that the banzuke had to be made on a KK/MK split of 9/31, but a reduction in the size of sanyaku from 11 to 9 helped make things fit well enough. Luckily a lot of the makekoshi in the upper and middle folds of the division were 7-8's and 6-9's, so no major holes were opening up. As a bonus the sanyaku now looks almost like the real thing for the first time in several tournaments, without the likes of 5 sekiwake or 6 komusubi clogging things up.

Some holes did appear in high makushita (from around Ms6 to Ms20), where a few 7-8's have found themselves moving up slightly to avoid having to overpromote the modest number of KK records even more than they already are. Conversely, things were rather crowded in the lower half of juryo and makekoshi dropped fairly hard there.

As usual the unadjusted records can be found behind the spoiler tag.

Project ketchup catch-up is underway, and if you happen to be incredibly bored, you can now relive the last six months worth of FS happenings (including one ozeki losing the rank and two others gaining it), courtesy of newly added notes to the results and banzuke:

Aki 2017 banzuke, Aki 2017 results, Kyushu 2017 banzuke, Kyushu 2017 results, Hatsu 2018 banzuke, Hatsu 2018 results

Toto/Quad/Oracle to be similarly treated over the next few days.

Has anyone ever won all 3 Seki games in one basho? That seems like it would be quite the feat.

The new Oracle banzuke has been posted above, and the following retrospective notes have been added:

Aki 2017, Kyushu 2017, Hatsu 2018

These six months have seen one ozeki gone intai, one demoted and re-promoted immediately, one more demoted just now and still hoping to return, and two players securing their promotion. Busy days here in Oracle!

And now at last the new Toto banzuke has been posted as well. I'd like to quote a key paragraph:

On 28.2.2018 at 02:08, Asashosakari said:

Congrats again, Simon!

Furthermore, there are now also added summaries for:

Aki 2017, Kyushu 2017, and Hatsu 2018 (with escalating amounts of text, oddly enough)

Whew. I'll do my best to not fall behind again.

Thanks a billion, Pierre, for all your amazing work!

This basho is going to be a nightmare. I was just shaking my head at my Oracle picks. The worst possible basho to debut at ozeki in Toto and yokozuna in Sumo Game. I would basically be overjoyed with a KK in both games.

Hmmm,  will Simon be a Hakuho or Kisenosato as a Sumo Game Yokozuna? If you give up too many kinboshi early I will give you a certificate saying you strained your Gluteus maximus sitting at your PC too much which you can use to go kyujo. (Carriedawayonastretcher...) (Laughing...)

Assuming you mean Quad - you missed three consecutive tournaments, what do you think should happen after that?

You're always welcome to start playing again, of course.

Fantasy Sumo has had a strong influx of new players over the last few tournaments, however not without some growing pains. Several players had debuted in the game recently, then went absent for a basho or two, and were now back for Haru basho - using different shikona, which unfortunately is something I can't really track on my own unless the change is very obvious and/or I already know and recognize the player (e.g. what led to my query to Sakura two months ago).

Thanks to graciously received efforts by Pandaazuma I've been able to "connect" a few of these returned players to the names they used initially, to improve the accuracy of the banzuke. However, as part of our checking we discovered two more players who had done the same thing back in Hatsu basho. I've decided to correct the Haru basho FS banzuke posted earlier in this thread in order to eliminate these unintentional player duplicates, which is to the benefit of these players. (Their Hatsu result is now applied to the banzuke rank they previously earned under the old names, instead of treating them as rookie players.) Specifically, this has resulted in minor changes to the banzuke areas Ms42e-Ms47e, Ms61e-Ms63e and Ms74e-Ms75e, and the elimination of two banzuke spots. This reduction of the banzuke size has - theoretically - implications for the Superbanzuke as its game points are based on the number of ranked players. However, if I'm not mistaken the effect of this amounts to at most 3 points per player, so I doubt it's worth changing the published Haru SB over it.

Going forward, Pandaazuma and I have decided that we'll be attempting to check for different-shikona returnees as a regular thing. Most of the time, these are players whose old incarnation has long since dropped off the banzuke due to inactivity (and so poses no issues), but at the moment it appears that there's a lot more short-term churn than usual.

On a different note regarding the FS banzuke - the recent return of greater player participation has also served to expand the rankings somewhat, so I'm considering splitting off a sandanme division from makushita again. Way back there were once well over 100 ranks below juryo (60 makushita, the rest sandanme), but I killed off sandanme some 5 years ago when what remained of the division at the time (about 20 ranks) was almost entirely filled by absent players, and low numbers of players joining the game each basho meant that it wasn't going to get any better. For a while it looked likely that we'd soon even struggle just to fill 50 ranks below juryo, and although we're still only back to about 75 ranks at the moment, the player turnover has increased significantly so the bottom of the rankings is a lot more "lively" than it used to be, for lack of a better word.

A separate 60-rank makushita would make as little sense now as it did 5 years ago, but I'm considering splitting off the top 40 or so ranks, which corresponds roughly to the "competitive" part of makushita where relatively few players are absent and the win-loss records are often similarly strong as those in makuuchi and juryo. The effect on the actual banzuke-making would be negligible, so this is mostly an aesthetic matter. I may also take a page out of the real thing's playbook, and treat the two divisions like Ozumo does jonidan and jonokuchi, with a floating split point to account for each basho's change in banzuke size, but I'm still undecided on whether that would be a good idea. (Perhaps not with changes after every basho...) Anyway, although I'm assuming that it's a matter that won't really concern anybody besides me, I'd like to ask for comments if anyone has 'em.

The Haru 2018 yusho in Fantasy Sumo was won by recently returned gaming veteran Furanohana, 3 point aheads of runner-up kishikaisei, with another sizable gap of 4 points to third place and the rest of the field.

Furanohana was already in the top 10 in his re-debut two months ago and made a big immediate jump up the banzuke from the Ms68-equivalent rookie slots to Ms38, and he's in line for another major promotion now. At this rate he might be in juryo before the year is done...

181 players showed up for Haru basho in total, a number not seen in about 3 years, including 24 entries from players not already ranked.

Best-possible lineup (wins/points and number of selections):

3/21 Kakuryu (133)
2/15 Tochinoshin (33)
2/14 Endo (49)
1/8 Shohozan (25) sole KK rikishi, least picked rikishi
2/17 Kaisei (21)
1/9 Chiyoshoma (21) / Daieisho (18)
1/10 Yutakayama (53) sole KK rikishi
1/10 Daiamami (17) least picked rikishi
1/11 Ikioi (75)
------------
14/115 (winner's lineup 12/107)

Furanohana didn't leave many points on the table...

With just three sansho being awarded and no rikishi scoring a kinboshi over sole present yokozuna Kakuryu, the extra points/wins opportunities were limited this time. It didn't help that the three sansho winners all weren't super-popular in their respective brackets - Takayasu and Tamawashi received 80 picks apiece in the Tochinoshin and Endo sections, though at least they also posted good results, while Hokutofuji was selected 76 times in the Kaisei bracket and disappointed completely.

On the upside, most players did seem to hear about Hakuho and Kisenosato being kyujo and managed to not miss the yusho-winning yokozuna from their lineups. Strangely enough, the highest-ranking entry that didn't have Kakuryu finished in 75th place and came from...FS resident drone Monkey. (And at quite some distance - the best human player with either Hak or Kise was tied for 116th with 5 points less.)

Worst-possible lineup:

3/21 Kakuryu (133) [kyujo Hakuho (35), Kisenosato (13)]
0/7 Mitakeumi (13) sole MK rikishi
0/2 Arawashi (12)
0/3 Takakeisho (72) most picked rikishi / [kyujo Onosho (20)]
0/6 Hokutofuji (76) / Chiyomaru (11) Hokutofuji most picked rikishi
0/5 Tochiozan (54) most picked rikishi
0/1 Kotoyuki (21)
0/3 Hidenoumi (20)
0/5 Sokokurai (19)
------------
3/53 (red lantern lineup 2/43 in points but with Hak/Onosho, 0/46 in wins but with Kise; lowest "real" lineup 3/59)

I'm not sure I've seen a zero-win entry before...

An odd mix of the worst performers being either very popular or largely avoided.

So, the lineups were all over the place from slot to slot this time. Somehow this worked out to roughly average overall scoring, namely...

Average wins by division:

Makuuchi  7.64 (21 KK, 21 MK)
Juryo     7.85 (18 KK,  8 MK; -1 win ->  6 KK, 20 MK)
Makushita 6.61 (43 KK, 70 MK;                         +1 win -> 67 KK, 46 MK)

Overall   7.03

Neither of those possible scoring adjustments looks all that appealing, so I'll stick with the original results for all players. Juryo is particularly screwed up with nearly half the division finishing 8-7, and although that part of the banzuke looks like it'll (barely) work out, some of these players won't be getting very lucky.

Final standings (banzuke wins in brackets):

1 Furanohana 107 (12+2)
2 kishikaisei 104 (12+1)
3 Carlos 100 (12)
4 Danishido 99 (12)
5 Jorach 98 (11)
6 Ketsukai 95 (11)
7 Sherlockiama 95 (10)
8 MussenoYama 95 (9)
9 SuperSteveZeki 95 (9)
10 Terarno 95 (9)
11 Innyuendo 95 (9)
12 Bill 94 (10)
13 Motohageouryu 94 (9)
14 Jro59 94 (10)
