Seki-Toto/Quad/Oracle/Fantasy Sumo banzuke for Hatsu 2018 (+ invitation to play!)

Recommended Posts

Seki-Toto (play):

The run of unexpected yusho winners continued for a fourth tournament; this time the championship was earned by recently returned veteran player Chijanofuji - and with a nowadays rare 14-1 record, to boot, two wins clear of runner-up Fujisan and three+ of anybody else. One of the multitude of 11-4 scores was posted by Norizo to mark the yokozuna's first strong result in a year.

Order did get restored as far as the divisional alignment of the results is concerned, with the top division averaging 7.9 wins, well ahead of juryo and makushita. The KK/MK split up there ended up as only 22/20 anyway, however, with the most popular records being, strangely enough, 11-4 (8 times) and 6-9 (9 times). In an unusual occurrence, all 70 players ranked in makuuchi and juryo were active for the basho.

ScreechingOwl had another of those many 11-win records, but it's hard to consider that the start of a tsuna run, being three wins off the winner and not even jun-yusho. Gurowake went 8-7 again, while Susanoo takes a seat on the kadoban carousel for Hatsu basho.

Three of the four sekiwake had respectable KK results, but unfortunately the best W-L was posted by the one who was furthest away from ozeki consideration (Kaiomitsuki with 18 wins from Nagoya and Aki), so no promotions here once again. The best-placed contender was Unkonoyama with 21 (albeit starting from M6), but he scored worst here with a 7-8 makekoshi.

It's going to be very crowded at the third-highest rank for Hatsu after no less than three komusubi posted double-digit wins to force promotion, which has also caused DeRosa to be stuck at komusubi with a rank/record combo that would ordinarily mean direct promotion from maegashira to sekiwake, and Konosato to miss out on sanyaku altogether with an eminently promotable record. Sorry about that, but I really am trying to stick to a maximum of 12 sanyaku spots unless more is absolutely unavoidable. The top ozeki contenders for Hatsu by the numbers are now Fujisan and Flohru, both with 21 wins from their last two appearances.

Overall this was a very typical Toto banzuke with small promotions / large demotions in upper makuuchi, and the inverse further down (starting from M8 this time). No pockets of really huge luck either way though, and it was still possible to demote 7-8's as far down as J12, so this thing is one of the more normal-looking banzuke we've had of late.

Seki-Quadrumvirate (play):

Like all the previous 2017 bashos the last one of the year also finished with low scoring, totalling a winning percentage of 43.0%, just shy of 6.5 wins on average. That was good news for one of our ozeki, as it meant they too were eligible for the scoring adjustment (which they wouldn't have been at >6.5). As for the field as a whole, 7-8 was by far the most popular score, so +1'ing them all created a decent scoring spread for the basho. (Makuuchi 10/32 -> 24/18, juryo 4/21 -> 8/17.)

It wasn't a basho for the top-rankers, however, as none of the 9 sanyaku guys managed to be among the 14 "real" kachikoshi. Consequently the top score was only 7-8 -> 8-7 achieved by 4 players, among them ozeki ScreechingOwl who avoids kadoban territory again (while Gurowake does not), and sekiwake Gernobono who has unfortunately fallen just a little bit short of an ozeki promotion with 12-3, 9-6, 8-7. He's joined at the third rank by Kuroimori and Norizo, the other pair of KK players.

In fact, it really wasn't a basho for higher-ranked players at all - none of the M1-M7 players managed 8 real wins either, while more than half the players in the lower maegashira ranks did. As one might expect that set of results produced a rather severe crunch in the middle of the division, where lots of upper-ranker MKs and lower-ranker KKs collided. Consequently basically everyone between M5 and M15 on the new banzuke ended up with bad banzuke luck, so if you think your movement sucks, at least you can feel relieved that you're far from the only one. Sanyaku found itself reduced in size again, this time from 9 to 8, with only one maegashira player deserving of promotion.

Seki-Oracle (play):

The top-rankers got mauled by the Kyushu edition of Oracle. Pandaazuma went makekoshi for the very first time in his 10-basho yokozuna stint, and Norizo also ended up below average again after 7 tournaments. And to add insult to injury it was MK time for tsuna-chasing ozeki Gurowake as well, so kadoban beckons for him. Choshu-yuki took the final spot above the KK/MK line to avoid the same fate.

In better news, last basho's demoted ozeki ScreechingOwl finished this tournament in 2nd place and easily earned the ticket back to the second-highest rank. He was very nearly accompanied by yusho winner Asashosakari, but a run of 8-7, 9-6, 14-1 Y was deemed to be not quite enough in the end. (Not a fan of ozeki runs where nearly the entire value is bundled up in one score, and the 31-win total wasn't enough of a difference maker on its own.)

Okay, I'm going to try Fanatsy Sumo. This is probably a total newbie question but what is with the groupings? Terunofuji in Ozeki/Sanyaku? Groups C & D have a few that aren't Ozeki/Sanyaku.

Fantasy Sumo (play):

Another credible showing for the top-rankers, although neither Pandaazuma, Taka nor shin-ozeki Chisaiyama managed to crack double digits. And the rank is up for another expansion courtesy of this run by Asashosakari:

2017.07 M8w 12-3 -> 10-5
2017.09 M2w 13-2 -> 12-3
2017.11 Se 11-4 -> 10-5

It's another promotion that is a bit non-standard with the low starting rank, but 32-in-3 with straight double-digit records has shot well clear of the recently applied ozeki promotion standards, which had dropped as low as 28 wins due to everyone struggling just to KK consistently. So in light of that, the win total was easily enough to suggest promotion even from M8.

It was a strong tournament for the sanyaku-rankers overall, with only two makekoshi in the 11-strong lot. Consequently we're right back to having loads of sekiwake, but the komusubi rank is held just by the minimum two this time. Altogether we're staying at 11 for the third straight tournament, some unusual stability for FS.

Things were quite relaxed in the upper maegashira ranks, but eventually the excess of KK records took its toll, and the promotions and demotions all became rather unfavourable. And then it all got somewhat wacky in juryo where, despite an okay KK/MK split, some amount of good and bad luck alternated nearly from one rank to the next due to holes constantly opening and closing. Not too pretty, but it works.

Okay, I'm going to try Fanatsy Sumo. This is probably a total newbie question but what is with the groupings? Terunofuji in Ozeki/Sanyaku? Groups C & D have a few that aren't Ozeki/Sanyaku.

The group headers are more for general guidance. Mike tends to shift a few rikishi around if they look very out of place in their ranking, or to pad out groups that would otherwise be too short.

You're invited to play! (Yushowinner...)

Seki-Toto (play) - predict the winners of all sekitori bouts each day and score wins by being above-average

Seki-Quadrumvirate (play) - pick four different rikishi each day and get at least three winners

Seki-Oracle (play) - predict the final records of all 70 sekitori ahead of the basho and get as close as possible

Fantasy Sumo (play) - pick makuuchi rikishi from 9 pre-determined groups and score points via their results

Ignore the grouping labels.  They've never been accurate since I've played.  Just focus on who is in the groups.  Maybe at one point in time he had many smaller groups at the top and a few large groups at the bottom, but now that he's dividing them somewhat equally, of course they're going to generally be labeling guys too high, because most of the groups are for the top of the banzuke.

2018 in Fantasy Sumo was opened up by animals running wild as War Rhino took victory by two points over Monkey, FS's resident drone. (And Kung Fu Pandas 2 finished third for good measure...)

Another big influx of 21 newbies, helping the Hatsu edition to a total number of 164 participants.

Best-possible lineup (wins/points and number of selections):

1/11 Kakuryu (17)
1/12 Takayasu (69)
5/32 Tochinoshin (20) [also 2/13 Ichinojo (18)]
2/10 Yoshikaze (26)
2/12 Endo (33)
1/9 Shohozan (22) / Chiyomaru (15)
1/9 Kagayaki (33)
2/15 Abi (65)
2/15 Ryuden (31)
------------
17/125 (winner's lineup 14/113)

Picking yusho winner Tochinoshin was obviously a grand idea. Those 20 players all ended up inside the top 29, so it was basically impossible to do badly enough with the rest of your squad to undo that one-slot good fortune. On the other hand a few people did manage to finish fairly high in the standings even without him; the best one got to shared 7th place.

There were loads of additional points again courtesy of another 6 kinboshi and 4 sansho tournament, with just one yokozuna again who made it all the way through. However, as seen above the best picks were largely ignored, with only Takayasu and Abi getting selected by more than a fifth of the player base.

Kagayaki was the only KK pick in his bracket.

Worst-possible lineup:

0/1 Kisenosato (13) [also 0/2 Hakuho (134)]
0/6 Tamawashi (23)
0/0 Terunofuji (30)
0/7 Shodai (23)
0/4 Ikioi (27)
0/6 Tochiozan (69) / Chiyonokuni (26)
0/3 Aminishiki (32)
0/5 Takekaze (31)
1/8 Nishikigi (44) / Daiamami (18)
------------
1/40 (red lantern lineup 3/45 in points, 2/54 in wins)

Again one section in which everybody managed to KK. In addition Tamawashi, Shodai and Takakaze were the only makekoshi guys in their respective brackets.

Those bad-pick numbers actually don't look too bad (the yokozuna slot aside), but since so many players didn't manage to pick up the good stuff either, it all ended up as a pretty low-scoring basho after all. To wit...

Average wins by division:

Makuuchi  5.58 ( 5 KK, 35 MK; +1 win ->  9 KK, 31 MK; +2 wins -> 16 KK, 24 MK)
Juryo     6.81 ( 9 KK, 18 MK; +1 win -> 14 KK, 13 MK)
Makushita 6.74 (32 KK, 65 MK; +1 win -> 45 KK, 52 MK)

Overall   6.47

Yikes. That was some bad, bad play by the makuuchi crowd. And I loathe having to adjust the top division more favourably than the rest of the game. "Fortunately" it turns out that the makuuchi banzuke doesn't actually get any easier to do at +2 despite the improved KK/MK split, because it would have to come at the expense of three extra sanyaku slots. (In other words, the gaps to fill get even bigger, and the additional KKs don't help enough to compensate.)

So, +1 for all three divisions, strange as it might look for makuuchi.

Final standings (banzuke wins in brackets):

1 War Rhino 113 (14+1)
2 Monkey 111 (14+1)
3 Kung Fu Pandas 2 107 (12)
4 Valley Wind 101 (12)
5 pandaazuma 98 (12)
