Seki-Toto/Quad/Oracle/Fantasy Sumo banzuke for Nagoya 2017 (+ invitation to play!)

Recommended Posts

Seki-Toto (play):

If a Choshu-yuki yusho wasn't enough evidence already, the wacky Natsu basho was also borne out in the divisional results, where juryo outscored the top division by more than half a win. Oddly enough (or perhaps not), things mirrored the Quad results with good scores in the top half of makuuchi and the bottom half of juryo and below, and not so great results in between.

That forced me to deviate from my already rather permissive banzuke-making style by being even more generous to a few kachikoshi from juryo, as the standard approach led to an M10-15 area that was just too much at odds with the rest of the banzuke (especially in the two 7-8's down there, who would have moved up rather than down). That section turned into quite the puzzle job, but I think the pieces now fit as well as they ever will.

Anyway... Yokozuna Norizo had another average basho, scoring his 3rd 8-7 record in the last 12 months (the other scores were 11, 5 and 9). I'd raise an eyebrow at the mediocrity of it all, but it's not like we have a host of players who are more consistent than that right now. Ozeki Gurowake had a basho to remember - unfortunately, it'll be remembered for all the wrong reasons as he went 2-13. (Eh?) Already kadoban following a 6-9 in January and kosho in March, he now finds himself downed to sekiwake. Best of luck in the repromotion opportunity!

Shin-ozeki Susanoo did much better and scored 10 wins, while ScreechingOwl posted his 3rd straight KK since re-ascending to the ozeki rank, albeit only an 8-7 this time. Randomitsuki was up for repromotion in May, but his 7-8 fell well short of the 10-win target. (For those scoring at home, yes, that does mean we've entirely turned over the ozeki squad in the last 5 tournaments, and only ScreechingOwl's immediate return last November has saved us from not even having two ozeki right now.)

Outside of Randomitsuki only Profomisakari was reasonably close to an ozeki promotion before Natsu, having entered the basho with 20 wins, but he went just 8-7 giving him 19 in the latest two tournaments now, so his chances of making it have decreased. Pandaazuma takes over the sekiwake top spot for Nagoya following 10 wins, which also leaves him at 19 and with the same fighting chance for promotion. (Truth be told, if I had known what a mess the ozeki rank was going to turn into, I might have promoted him 12 months ago after his just-short 10/10/11 run...always annoying when one of the most consistent players remains at sekiwake because the stars just haven't quite aligned. Gimme 12 this time to seal the deal, will ya?)

Enough babbling, here's the new banzuke.

Seki-Quadrumvirate (play):

As mentioned earlier and alluded to above, the Natsu Quad results defied easy banzukefication thanks to a massive results gap in the middle of the rankings. As I'm a firm believer that score adjustments should only happen to make the banzuke work better, not just to make the scores look prettier, I ended up not giving out the extra win. The overall win average of 45.5% was practically identical to the March results anyway, and those didn't get adjusted either, so...

Ozeki Gurowake, who had been on the verge of demotion six months ago, has now cleared his name completely thanks to his second 9-6 record (with a kosho in between). And he won't have to hold down the fort at the second-highest rank alone anymore as freshly demoted ScreechingOwl came through in the biggest way possible, scoring the Natsu yusho with the tournament's only 11-4 record. Congrats on the immediate ozeki return! As provided for in the rules, this outstanding result means that ScreechingOwl will get to start over with a completely clean slate, rather than with one kadoban point. (Interestingly, the only previous ozeki to successfully return right away also did with such a strong record; Tosahayate had a 13-2 yusho-doten in Nagoya 2013, which was worth 11 adjusted wins at the time. All others failed to reach 10 wins.)

The second-best result of the basho was also provided by a sekiwake with Norizo's 10-5 score, though that wasn't good enough to earn a promotion as well due to only 17 wins in the previous pair of tournaments. He's at 19 wins now and normally needs another 10-5 to reach the 29-win expected mark and move up, but a 9-6 may be looked at favourably - there are no incremental score adjustments for the overall banzuke-making, but the latest two tournaments have both played rather tough and Norizo technically deserves nearly a full extra win from them (+0.3 for Haru, +0.6 for Natsu, relative to the makuuchi scoring). Of course, it's possible that Nagoya will swing the other way, so a "cheap" 9-6 in a high-scoring tournament won't cut it.

4 of the 8 S/K players had sizable makekoshi with 6 wins or fewer and none of the maegashira-joi had results that were good enough to force their way in, so the sanyaku ranks have been cut yet again (from 9 to 6) and even that required a slightly lucky promotion just to fill out the last spot. The good news is that the three extra maegashira slots helped resolve the mess further down from M13 onward where, effectively, all scores are in fact treated as +1 win even if not officially so. (Though the 7-8's received a reduced boost compared to the real KKs.)

Anyway, here's the new banzuke with the neatest sanyaku alignment possible, a throwback to the 19th century if you will.

A short history of Seki-Quad banzuke with fewer than 8 sanyaku (O/S/K numbers in brackets):

Haru 2005 (0/3/3)
Kyushu 2005 (0/3/3)
Nagoya 2006 (0/3/4)
Natsu 2007 (0/4/3)
Nagoya 2009 (1/2/3)
Natsu 2016 (3/2/2)

So, the first time with the 2/2/2 alignment. Also just the third time altogether with only the minimum 2 sekiwake and 2 komusubi - other than currently and in Natsu 2016 we've had that in Nagoya 2016 (4/2/2) as well.

Seki-Oracle (play):

Yokozuna Pandaazuma proved unstoppable again and won the Natsu Oracle yusho (with a converted 15-0 score, no less), becoming the first player to win back-to-back since then-ozeki Hironoumi achieved the feat exactly three years ago. I hear he wants to go for the three-peat, and I'm not sure I would bet against it...

His west-side counterpart Norizo posted a very credible shared 4th place finish, good for converted 10 wins. These two may get company at the top rank in two months as ozeki ScreechingOwl was the runner-up player and could secure promotion with a similarly strong Nagoya result. Randomitsuki scored an 8-7 record, his 9th straight KK, while Gurowake went 7-8 for his first makekoshi since ascending to the ozeki rank 12 months ago, so he will be kadoban.

Choshu-yuki has had two very strong results of late - yusho-doten in March, shared 4th in May - and is in the running for promotion to ozeki this basho. Smoczayama was a contender last time, but missed his second straight basho.

The new banzuke, with a sanyaku count other than 10 for the first time since Nagoya 2015:

Fantasy Sumo (play):

Average wins by division:

Makuuchi  9.08 (34 KK,  6 MK; -1 win -> 28 KK, 12 MK; -2 wins -> 16 KK, 24 MK)
Juryo     9.19 (22 KK,  4 MK; -1 win -> 16 KK, 10 MK; -2 wins ->  9 KK, 17 MK)
Makushita 8.23 (51 KK, 33 MK; -1 win -> 40 KK, 44 MK, -2 wins -> 29 MK, 55 MK)

Overall   8.62

I usually try to take my adjustment cues from the KK/MK breakdown, which would (narrowly) indicate subtracting only 1 win in juryo, but with the 9.19 average score I'm finding it hard to justify treating 9 wins as a kachikoshi...

So, my first draft has been done with -2 in juryo, which works but looks a bit meh in some parts of the division - I'll try to see if there's a superior result to be had at -1, maybe with the 9-6 -> 8-7 players only receiving half the usual KK credit.

I ended up going for yet another option with the juryo division in the end: half KK credit but with minus 2 wins, so players with 9-6 -> 7-8 records were treated as neither KK nor MK, resulting in some moving up and others moving down a bit as needed. (Or to look at it another way, it's an implied adjustment of minus 1.5 wins, appropriate enough in between the -2 for makuuchi and -1 for makushita.) Eagle-eyed observers of my banzuke-making approach may wonder right now that the effect should be exactly the same as doing 9-6 -> 8-7 with half KK credit, so what's the difference? Answer: None really, but I'm much more comfortable with giving out small promotions to some 7-8 records, rather than any demotions at all for 8-7's.

Anyway... Ozeki Taka finished the Natsu tournament in 5th place of the overall competition and with a share of the second-best W-L record for makuuchi, and will be observed keenly for possible promotion to yokozuna this basho. Pandaazuma also had a credible record, but kuroimori went makekoshi and will be kadoban.

No promotions to the ozeki rank this time as the best sekiwake result was only an adjusted 8-7, but Hironoyama does have 20 combined wins with that now and will have an opportunity to move up after Nagoya. The west spot at the third-highest rank is taken by Toratorii who has already had a near-ozeki quality run of 10 / 9 / 9 wins, but unfortunately starting from M8 so he has only now arrived in contention territory. Altogether the sanyaku ranks were cut back from 11 to 10 spots again.

As always, first the "clean" banzuke with the various adjusted scores, then the original results behind the spoiler tag.

Fun with volatile scoring:

Chocshoporyu was demoted from sekiwake to komusubi 8 months ago. He has scored four different win-loss results since then, but...

2016.11 K2w 7-8 -> 8-7
2017.01 K1e 9-6 -> 8-7
2017.03 K1e 6-9 -> 8-7
2017.05 K1e 10-5 -> 8-7

Thanks as always for the hard work.  And I extend that to everyone who volunteers their time and skills to make the games possible.

Seki-Toto (play) - predict the winners of all sekitori bouts each day and score wins by being above-average

Seki-Quadrumvirate (play) - pick four different rikishi each day and get at least three winners

Seki-Oracle (play) - predict the final records of all 70 sekitori ahead of the basho and get as close as possible

Fantasy Sumo (play) - pick makuuchi rikishi from 9 pre-determined groups and score points via their results

Invitation to play! (Yushowinner...)

The FS yusho was won by Danishido in a very close decision over Kitakachiyama who had the same total points but lost out in the bracket tiebreaker on slot #7. A quintet of players followed at a two-point deficit. All in all the top 10 results were only 5 points apart, a highly competitive edition of the game indeed.

Only 122 players this basho, very low even by recent standards. The participation levels were having their usual summer lull in all the games, but I did wonder if it also had an effect that the game front page never mentioned that Nagoya entries were open. I'll try to keep an eye on that next time.

Best-possible lineup (wins/points and number of selections):

3/22 Hakuho (100)
1/9 Takayasu (57)
2/14 Mitakeumi (60)
2/12 Tochinoshin (32) [also 2/11 Hokutofuji (25)]
1/12 Tochiozan (52)
2/18 Aoiyama (44)
1/10 Shohozan (19) / Chiyotairyu (11)
1/9 Takarafuji (67)
1/9 Chiyomaru (13)
------------
14/115 (winner's lineup 12/104, runner-up's lineup 13/104)

The top-scoring rikishi were largely the plurality or even majority picks, so lots of good scores this basho. The two leaders' biggest miss was both of them picking Onosho instead of Aoiyama. Four of the five third-place finishers did have Aoiyama but blundered into other sub-optimal picks and weren't able to profit from that sizable 8-point advantage.

Worst-possible lineup:

0/2 Kisenosato (9) / Kakuryu (5)
0/1 Terunofuji (52)
0/7 Kotoshogiku (12)
0/2 Endo (31)
0/5 Chiyoshoma (18) / Kagayaki (8)
0/5 Daieisho (13)
0/4 Tokushoryu (11)
0/6 Sokokurai (18)
0/3 Gagamaru (7)
------------
0/35 (red lantern lineup: 3/47)

Rather low selection rates, Terunofuji aside, although these worst picks obscure the fact that Okinoumi (0/5 x 63 in bracket 7) and Kotoyuki (0/4 x 48 in bracket 9) also killed a lot of squads with only marginally greater benefit in points. Kotoshogiku was the only 0-win choice in his section, the rest all offered at least two traps.

Average wins by division:

Makuuchi  9.56 (29 KK,  7 MK; -1 win -> 25 KK, 11 MK; -2 wins -> 19 KK, 17 MK)
Juryo     9.26 (15 KK,  4 MK; -1 win -> 12 KK,  7 MK; -2 wins ->  8 KK, 11 MK)
Makushita 8.34 (47 KK, 20 MK; -1 win -> 39 KK, 28 MK, -2 wins -> 26 MK, 41 MK)

Overall   8.84

Even higher scoring than last basho's 8.62, and the two sekitori divisions way out in front again, as usual when many favoured rikishi do well. Consequently there's no getting around the -2 adjustment for makuuchi and juryo, while makushita will also be getting adjusted at -1 again.

In fact, I kinda wish I could adjust several parts of makushita separately, as the top 20 ranks put up a sekitori-level result of 9.33 wins... (Ms21-40 averaged 8.06, Ms41-Ms60 plus the newcomers only 7.14.) Other than a bit of a crunch down to ~Ms6 things seem to be working out okay though, albeit with pretty large demotions for the unfortunate few who went MK in that area.
