Taizeniki 0 Posted July 23, 2004 Just wondering, among those who might have the vantage point to know, how the large number of gaijin rikishi are doing in picking up Japanese. I realize that they are taught Japanese in the heya, are they not? But which have more easily gained proficiency and who is still struggling? :-/ Secondly, due to large number of gaijin, is the Japanese language "rule" being relaxed? Will we ever see a mongolian or european ever give his yusho interview via a translator?
Kaikitsune Makoto 210 Posted July 24, 2004 Here some stuff about this: http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=3329 how the large number of gaijin rikishi are doing in picking up Japanese. I realize that they are taught Japanese in the heya, are they not? But which have more easily gained proficiency and who is still struggling? Secondly, due to large number of gaijin, is the Japanese language "rule" being relaxed? Will we ever see a mongolian or european ever give his yusho interview via a translator? Kyokutenho is said to be completely fluent in Japanese at least. I wonder if he can write Japanese well too though? Konishiki learned Japanese naturally but sucked at writing it which became evident at some amateur sumo thing where we was doing some clerk work. I'd think for guys like Kotooshu, learning Japanese just comes with the situation. I doubt he has any Bulgarian talking people helping him or talking Bulgarian to him. Even the modestly talented person linquistically is bound to learn a new language to some degree fast when all you get is that language every day. As for the yusho interview via translator prospect, it would feel very strange since sumo remains a very Japanese phenomenon with roots there etc. The contents of yusho interviews aren't exactly the most difficult Japanese either so all yusho winners should manage that..even Musashimaru did. Roho gave his jonidan yusho interview in Japanese too if I remember correctly but once there was a young Mongolian rikishi who had Kyokutenzan as interpreter. The guy was shy but said some Japanese too... http://www.banzuke.com/~movies/aki2001/day...ho_interview.rm

Currently Sandanme east 2, but with a healthy 6-1, should be promoted to around his highest- Makushita 20. Maybe a bit lower, around the thirties..No. Yes. No.
