Seki-Toto/Quad/Oracle + Fantasy Sumo banzuke for Nagoya 2016

Recommended Posts

Seki-Quadrumvirate (play):

The Natsu edition of Quad was on course for record highs, before the scoring did come down a bit thanks to low-scoring Days 11, 13 and 14 (although senshuraku then closed with the second-highest scores ever for that day). That second-week relief didn't save the makuuchi players though, who posted a collective average of 8.8 wins, making a score adjustment inevitable. Even after the minus 1 we had a 23 KK / 17 MK distribution, so most makekoshi players will still find themselves treated quite harshly.

On the last banzuke release I claimed that neither sekiwake was anywhere near promotion, but ScreechingOwl decided to prove me wrong by finishing 12-3 runner-up in Natsu. While this set of records:

2016.01 K1w 9-6 Y -> 10-5

2016.03 S1e 8-7

2016.05 S1e 12-3 D -> 11-4

barely clears the standard mark of 29 (adjusted) wins for an all-sanyaku run, the fact that it involved two hoshitori-topping tournament scores made this an easy thumbs up. Congrats!

The incumbent ozeki trio had rather different levels of success last month: Gurowake posted an unspectacular adjusted 8-7 to remain MK-free in his three-basho ozeki career, while DeRosa was adjusted down to 7-8 and has now scored back-to-back makekoshi; he'll be hard kadoban and in danger of demotion in July. Gernobono already was hard kadoban, for the second time in just a year, but just like the first time around he came back with a strong performance of 10 adjusted wins, finishing right behind the yusho-leading trio of players. Consequently he has fully cleared his name again.

With all four lower sanyaku players vacating their ranks - ScreechingOwl up, all others down - there was room for some lucky promotions into sanyaku, so at least a few players may be pleasantly surprised. While I'm at it, I'd like to highlight one of the most consistently good players of the last year, shin-komusubi Kyodaitimu:

2015.07 J12w 10-4-1 J

2015.09 J1w kosho

2015.11 J3e 11-4

2016.01 M11e 8-7 -> 9-6

2016.03 M7e 8-7

2016.05 M3w 10-5 -> 9-6

Nice to see some fresh talent coming through. :-)

All in all this banzuke was pretty easy to assemble, with only a bit of a mess at the bottom of makuuchi interrupting the flow.

Since the banzuke tends to be terribly hard to read when adjusted scores are involved, I'm posting a pretty version with the original scores - do keep in mind that all makuuchi players were treated as though they had one win less. For the ugly truth with the adjusted scores also listed, scroll down to the spoiler tag.

Good thing I didn't make any promises as to when the other three rankings would come... :-S

Seki-Oracle (play):

Debuting yokozuna Pandaazuma made an impressive start as one of Oracle's standard bearers, finishing Natsu basho in shared 4th place. He's easily taking over the Yokozuna East slot on the new banzuke as Norizo merely had an adequate 9-6 record to show, and Andoreasu even went makekoshi.

However, Pandaazuma was still only the 4th-best high-ranker of the basho - the ozeki pair of Randomitsuki and Ganzohnesushi went a couple of points better to score 2nd and 3rd place, the latter getting rid of his kadoban tag in the process. Needless to say, with those results they'll be on tsuna watch during the next couple of weeks. The winner of the Natsu yusho was sekiwake Gurowake, who deservedly earned promotion to ozeki courtesy of an 11-4 -> 8-7 -> 11-4 -> 15-0 run, all while sekiwake-ranked. Congrats!

Fantasy Sumo (play):

As mentioned after the basho, the W-L scoring turned out rather weird this time, with over 90% of the players in makuuchi and over 75% in juryo scoring in the 7-8 to 9-6 range, and 7-8 the most popular record. Rather than have very little movement (and problems in juryo due to too few KK), I decided to bump the ranks/win multiplier up to 3 - normally it's 2, of course. The resulting banzuke is IMHO pretty fair, even though it looks a bit non-standard...but then it's not normal that nobody in makuuchi scores better than 9 wins either, is it? ;-)

Up in sanyaku nobody even managed that, so ozeki Pandaazuma's 8-7 record was one of just two kachikoshi in the titled ranks. The other was contributed by top sekiwake Chocshoporyu, not nearly enough to be considered for a promotion to ozeki though. Meanwhile, Jejima finds himself kadoban as one of the many 7-8's in the makuuchi division. The rest of sanyaku was changed in wholesale fashion with 6 demotions and 7 newcomers.

Due to the one-basho hiatus of FS all players who were kosho-absent in January and also missed the May tournament received a kosho extension as promised; these players are marked as kosho* in the rankings. Overall we were about 20 players short from the usual numbers which meant a veritable truckload of kosho especially in makushita.

And to complete the set...

Seki-Toto (play):

Big results in makuuchi as usual with an average score of 8.1 wins, but as the KKs were concentrated in sanyaku the banzuke worked out okay without any adjustments. 13 sanyaku now, though, which I don't like to do, so tougher measures may have to be instituted next time.

Yokozuna Norizo posted an untypical off-basho with just an 8-7 record, while ScreechingOwl (11-4) and Randomitsuki (10-5) had a credible ozeki showing, though not enough to merit a tsuna run. Fellow ozeki Oskanohana was absent. Lots of double-digit records were also posted by sekiwake and komusubi, but none brought the requisite previous results to make their way to the ozeki rank this time. Pandaazuma (10/10/11) and yusho winner Smoczayama (10/12) are the top contenders for a promotion after Nagoya basho.

On a closing note: Unfortunately I had to mono-ii the Day 11 results in Toto. For some reason the automation seemingly "forgot" two entries at some point - 76 players entered the day, and all 76 entries went into the calculation of the day's scores (as can be deduced from the risk factor totals), but only 74 are reflected on the linked page - with a normally impossible split of 38 winners and 36 losers.

The two missing players are listed for Day 11 on the overall basho standings, marked as losses, which is how the error became apparent. That wouldn't be a problem if they had in fact lost, but a manual calculation of the day's results (and boy, was that a chore...) showed that their missing scores were above the median. Consequently, the last two players above the incorrect median line had to be demoted into loser territory for the day to provide the correct split of 38 wins and 38 losses.

Summary of changes:

X -> O: Namsrai11 and Nakura

O -> X: Frinkanohana and Mariohana

Fortunately (sort of...), Frinkanohana and Mariohana were already makekoshi even with the original results, so the effect of these changes was minor.

2016.01 M11e 8-7 -> 9-6

2016.03 M7e 8-7

2016.05 M3w 10-5 -> 9-6

Nice to see some fresh talent coming through. :-)

Thank you! :)

Congrats to Holleshoryu on winning the Fantasy Sumo yusho!

Stats...

Best-possible lineup (wins/points):

1/12 Kisenosato

3/21 Harumafuji

1/8 Terunofuji

0/7 Kaisei

3/18 Takarafuji [also 2/16 Takayasu, 2/11 Tochiozan, 2/11 Okinoumi]

3/18 Yoshikaze

1/9 Chiyootori

2/17 Takanoiwa

1/9 Nishikigi/Arawashi

------------

15/119 (winner's lineup: 11/99)

Worst-possible lineup:

1/10 Hakuho

0/2 Kakuryu

0/1 Kotoshogiku

0/6 Tochinoshin [not counting kyujo Osunaarashi]

0/2 Kotoyuki

0/5 Shohozan

0/3 Endo

0/5 Daieisho [not counting kyujo Toyonoshima]

0/4 Sadanofuji [not counting kyujo Aminishiki]

------------

1/38 (red lantern lineup: 2/33 with Toyo & Ami; worst lineup without kyujo rikishi 3/45)

Average wins by division:

Makuuchi 7.19 (17 KK, 20 MK)

Juryo 6.80 (10 KK, 15 MK)

Makushita 6.39 (26 KK, 54 MK)

Overall average 6.67

Lots and lots of bonus wins available thanks to 5 kinboshi and 4 awarded sansho, but many of them ended up being scored in the same bracket. In addition many KK rikishi and kinboshi/sansho recipients were picked by rather few players, so the overall scoring turned out to be surprisingly low.
