Hatsu basho banzuke 2003

Recommended Posts

Here is the banzuke for Hatsu 2003. Only Makunouchi as yet (Kurausu first posted it on the German forum):

Y Musashimaru (Y, 4-2-9) Takanohana (Y, 0-0-15)

O Asashoryu (O, 14-1) Musoyama (O, 10-5)

O Tochiazuma (O, 8-7) Chiyotaikai (O, 6-3-6)

O Kaio (O, 2-2-11) ------------------------

S Takanowaka (K, 11-4) Kotomitsuki (S, 8-7)

K Takanonami (M1, 10-5) Wakanosato (S, 7-8)

M1 Tosanoumi (M1, 8-7) Miyabiyama (M2, 8-7)

M2 Kyokutenho (K, 7-8) Toki (M7, 9-6)

M3 Kotonowaka (M9, 10-5) Dejima (M10, 10-5)

M4 Aminishiki (M8, 9-6) Tokitsuumi (M7, 8-7)

M5 Kaiho (M8, 8-7) Iwakiyama (M11, 10-5)

M6 Hokutoriki (M2, 5-10) Kyokushuzan (M5, 7-8)

M7 Wakanoyama (M9, 8-7) Shimotori (M5, 7-8)

M8 Tamanoshima (M3, 5-10) Kotoryu (M6, 7-8)

M9 Takamisakari (M4, 5-10) Akinoshima (M14, 9-6)

M10 Tochinonada (M6, 6-9) Gojoro (M4, 4-11)

M11 Jumonji (M13, 8-7) Kasuganishiki (J1, 10-5)

M12 Tamakasuga (M3, 2-13) Takanotsuru (J2, 10-5)

M13 Otsukasa (J3, 10-5) Kasugao (J6, 11-4)

M14 Kobo (J3, 9-6) Tochinohana (M12, 6-9)

M15 Tamarikido (M13, 6-9) ------------------

Kasugao gave Korea it's first Makunouchi rikishi with good timing as of the announcement of the upcoming Korea koen.

The other shin-nyumaku is Toki-lookalike Takanotsuru.

Returnees are Kasuganishiki, Otsukasa and Kobo.

No real surprises this time. Takanowaka got the east Sekiwake spot and is at his highest rank to date. Takanonami returned to Komusubi, and apart from Takanowaka only Iwakiyama and the two shin-nyumaku are at their highest ranks.

I agree.

Here's juryo

Are you sure about these ranks?

They don't match up with what the Kyokai has printed on the english side of their webpage at the moment.

They have Kinkaiyama in the J1e position, amongst other differences:

Juryo Banzuke

I'm interested to know which ones the correct one.  (Huh?)

Asasekiryu J1

Despite being quite eager to slap down his opponents he brings fresh blood and technique in makuuchi. One of the three strong immediate future young upper makuuchi prospects. Shouldn't have problems getting kachi koshi and subsequent promotion to makuuchi.

Takekaze J3

Another rikishi who has overall strength, balance and technique and didn't have difficulties storming through the ranks since his ozumo debut.

Unfortunately after these two guys, juryo is presently simply a elongation of lower makuuchi with so many makuuchi veterans who don't seem to fit in makuuchi anymore. Definite shortage of promise in juryo. Kinkaiyama, Aogiyama, Oikari, Yotsukasa, Wakakosho, Daizen, Asanowaka, Oginishiki, Chiyotenzan and Kitazakura are good rikishi but also creating certain vacuum of interest in juryo. Ushiomaru is very good but the serious knee injury might plaque him for some time now. Hamanishiki has entertainment value and noble style but is in a somewhat serious plateau.

In makushita we have many interesting future sekitori prospects and dare I say future sanyaku regular (maybe even the most promising yokozuna candidate of the latter part of ongoing decade at the moment) too. Here are some rikishi drawing my interest, and undoubtedly others' too, in makushita ranks

Ms1 Dewanofuji

26 years old rikishi at his highest rank.

Ms2 Asamiyoshi

23 yeard old tank who is an ex-college champion and has good shot for sekitori debut. He was very close in Hatsu too but lost his last bout against juryo rikishi and finished 3-4. Not necessarily especially spectacular rikishi but fresh blood in juryo soon hopefully.

Ms3 Kakizoe

If I am not mistaken Kakizoe was considered a REALLY promising rikishi but he faced the common career obstacle in form of serious knee injury. Now at M3 this 24 year old Musashigawa-fellow has a good shot for sekitorihood.

Ms6 Kokkai

Kokkai is on the verge of being ready to step up the ladder and hovers between Ms1-Ms10. Tachi-ai could be better....

Only 21 years old and many good scalps already. Always followed closely by foreign sumofans.

Ms15 Kuniazuma and Nakao (Wakatsutomu)

These guys plummeted all the way to sandanme. Nakao trained with Takanohana couple of years ago during jungyo and got kachi koshi at his makuuchi debut. 1.5 years later he was in sandanme. Kuniazuma was once in upper juryo but then fell as a result of injuries (mainly his chronic back). Now both have regained some strength and smell oichomagehood again.

Ms18 Sentoryu

Sentoryu suffered only one defeat in Aki basho. He lost to future sanyaku star  (In a holiday mood...)

Ms20 Kotokikutsugi

18 years old rikishi with tremendously good sumo body. Muscles and speed. I got the chance to see some of his bouts and my prediction is that he will be next Sadogatake-superstar. He is better than Asashoryu was when he was in makushita. Too many variables still to know how good he will become but if Kintamayama was convinced of Asashoryu's ascension to ozekihood already when he was in sandanme, I am as convinced Kotokikutsugi will be at least strong maegashira in 2004. We shall see......

Ms40 Hakuba

19 years old Mongolian. Almost as good as Ama.

Ms49 Roho

22 year-old Russian will finally get some opposition. Very interesting to see how he does in makushita! If he is close to Kokkai's level already he should be able to clinch 5-2 or even 6-1. We shall see...

Other ideas? Other rikishi worth observing in makushita? I know there are but you tell me!

Ah..Christmas meal ready now

 (Xmas...)

Maybe Kirinowaka ( Michinoku-beya ), 19 years old and already in makushita ( makushita 50 ).

Chiyohakuho ( Kokonoe-beya ) is 19, makushita 44.

Heights and weights are from a supplement of a Sumo magazine in 5/2002. Maybe sometime I scan the mug shots from the magazine... The other information can be found on the NSK site... it is somewhat difficult, but it can be found... for the newer lower division rikishi the NSK site also has heights and weights.
