The sand/clay inside the ring and for about 1 foot outside the ring seems lighter in color than that of the remainder of the dohyo. In the past, it has all been the same shade. Edit: The ring is darkening down, but the outside band is staying light. Everyone entering and leaving the dohyo is making an effort not to step on the light external band. Edit: At the start of day2, the light colored material was not evident. The entire dohyo is now the same color/shade.
