2011 All-Japan College championships

Recommended Posts

Today was team day, won by Nittai-dai (first time in three years, fifth time overall) who beat titleholders Kinki 5-0. On the way they beat Ritsumei 4-1 and in the semis they beat powerhouse Nichidai 4-1 as well. Last year's individual champion Nakamura was the pivotal player for Nittaidai winning three bouts.

But who won this year's individuals?? The individuals were held yesterday, but I'll leave that to someone else who knows about this stuff far more than me (I have no idea..) and I'm actually quite surprised he hasn't posted the results yet..

Sorry sorry...between just plain forgetfulness, my home ISP seeing fit to put me offline regularly since Friday and the Naruto deal I haven't found the time to collect the information out there. I'll get to it later tonight, assuming I can get online...

This year's university yokozuna is Tokyo Nogyo 2nd-year student Naoya Shodai 正代直也 after beating Nittaidai freshman Daiki Nakamura 中村大輝 in the decider, not only becoming the first Tokyo Nogyo winner in 19 years (and 4th overall), but also giving himself an excellent 20th birthday gift. Shodai previously attained prominence by taking the Kokutai juniors title two years ago, Nakamura was last year's high school yokozuna. Speaking of the Kokutai, this year's champion Masahiro Yamaguchi went out in the round of 16 here unexpectedly. He wasn't the only upper-class competitor to bomb out early this year, the semifinals were contested exclusively by 1st and 2nd-year students. (Maybe some kind soul may add a few translated comments from the birthday boy and the losing finalist?)

Results as far as I can find them complete, as usual via Mainichi:

Round of 32:
Kurokawa (Takushoku) tsukiotoshi Haga (Toyo)
Kamiyama (Doshisha) abisetaoshi Noguchi (Nihon)
Doi (Nihon) uwatenage Yoshida (Nihon Taiiku)
Shodai (Tokyo Nogyo) uwatenage Ozawa (Toyo)
Yamaguchi (Nihon) tsukiotoshi Nagumo (Nihon Taiiku)
Kawaguchi (Kyushu Joho) tsukidashi Inoue (Tokai Gakuen)
Yamashita (Toyo) hatakikomi Takemura (Doshisha)
Kasai (Kinki) tsukidashi [Takumi] Hashimoto (Nihon Taiiku)
Haraikawa (Chuo) hikiotoshi Tanabe (Toyo)
Sakamoto (Nihon) yorikiri Matsumura (Kyushu Joho)
Omichi (Toyo) oshitaoshi Maruko (Tokyo Nogyo)
Kobayashi (Doshisha) oshitaoshi Ikeda (Kinki)
Nakayama (Toyo) tsukiedashi Kudo (Nihon)
Nishikata (Nihon Taiiku) fusen Kamata (Senshu)
Nakade (Toyo) oshidashi Iwasaki (Nihon)
Nakamura (Nihon Taiiku) tsukidashi Okada (Takushoku)

Round of 16:
Kamiyama (Doshisha) shitatehineri	Kurokawa (Takushoku)
Shodai (Tokyo Nogyo) tsukitaoshi Doi (Nihon)
Kawaguchi (Kyushu Joho) tsukiotoshi Yamaguchi (Nihon)
Kasai (Kinki) okuridashi Yamashita (Toyo)
Haraikawa (Chuo) oshidashi Sakamoto (Nihon)
Omichi (Toyo) tsukidashi Kobayashi (Doshisha)
Nishikata (Nihon Taiiku) yorikiri Nakayama (Toyo)
Nakamura (Nihon Taiiku) oshitaoshi Nakade (Toyo)

Quarterfinals:
Shodai (Tokyo Nogyo) yoritaoshi Kamiyama (Doshisha)
Kawaguchi (Kyushu Joho) okurihikiotoshi Kasai (Kinki)
Omichi (Toyo) oshidashi Haraikawa (Chuo)
Nakamura (Nihon Taiiku) oshidashi Nishikata (Nihon Taiiku)

Semifinals:
Shodai (Tokyo Nogyo) oshidashi Kawaguchi (Kyushu Joho)
Nakamura (Nihon Taiiku) oshidashi Omichi (Toyo)

Final:
Shodai (Tokyo Nogyo) hikiotoshi Nakamura (Nihon Taiiku)

I always assumed that this tournament was of the standard "three prelim rounds, 3-0's and maybe 2-1's move on to the playoffs" format, but from what I gather at the Nittaidai club website it's actually knockout all the way, with somewhere north of 128 competitors. Their club captain, 4th-year student and former high school yokozuna Seiya Hashimoto was knocked out in the round of 64, incidentally. Is he still as big a name as he was a few years ago, anybody know?

Random stuff gleaned from the Meiji club website:

Apparently the results of this tournament also serve as qualifying criteria for some of next year's college circuit events, namely the Uwajima and Usa tournaments. Meiji and Komazawa were tied as the 8th-best schools from East Japan in the prelim standings, so a playoff was performed; Meiji prevailed 3-1.

At last some explanation of why the Class A lineups of those circuit tournaments didn't seem to make much sense from year to year...I'd always made the erroneous assumption that the Class A / B designations are based on the results of those tournaments themselves.

Thank you for posting this stuff ! I wonder if the best rikishi of this generation will also turn to something else - professionally speaking - as some before them did.

And if anyone else has asked themselves where this tournament took place.
