Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted March 7, 2003 Does anyone else Shimotori is going to get destroyed in this basho? I think he's ranked too high and will be lucky to come out with more than 6 wins. I can see him staying around the lower half of the maegashira ranks for a while, but no higher. Looking at his past 90 bouts, only 46 are wins, and yet he's promoted to M3. If we didn't have so many sanyaku injuries, I don't think he'd be ranked this high. On the first day, he's facing Wakanosato. On the second day, Kotomitsuki. Two days, two sekiwake, two losses for Shimotori I think. Or am I completely underestimating him?
Tony 16 Posted March 7, 2003 I don't agree with you! I think that Shimotori could obtain good results in this basho. I believe that Shimotori will be, at least, sanyaku ( of course without severe injury(ies)).
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted March 7, 2003 Really? Shimotori in sanyaku?? Just when I thought I had some easy picks for my game predictions, there comes someone knowledgable (not to mention another Chiyonofuji fan) and makes it more difficult :-) Although this is one of the reasons I really like this board. So why do you think he will be so successful?
Tony 16 Posted March 7, 2003 He had a very good yotsu-zumo, powerful grips. He is a very difficult opponent ( look bouts agaisnt Asashoryu for example ). He lacks to regularity ( losses against "seconds couteaux" ). Then, he's only 24, 25 this year, so he can improve his sumo.
Kaikitsune Makoto 210 Posted March 7, 2003 I second largely to Tony's views. Shimotori has yotsu-quality. Especially his left arm is very deadly once it seizes outside grip on mawashi. He has physical strength to give good bouts to sanyaku and while he lacks some sparkyness and innovativeness, he also possesses rare sukuinage power. He does face most bouts in Haru as underdog but isn't a sure loser either.
Yubiquitoyama 4 Posted March 7, 2003 I also agree. Shimotori seems very promising in my eyes, and I would be very surprised if he won't be sanyaku at some point of his career, and probably more than once. Of course, 6-9 isn't that bad at that height, so you might be right he won't get a better result this basho, but I wouldn't be surprised if he goes 8-7. By the way, 46 wins of 90 isn't that bad. All elevator rikishi have more losses than wins and after a while in Makunouchi, only perennial sanyaku and Ozekis/Yokozunas can ever sustain a record of more wins than losses (in Makunouchi). As an example, Aogiyama have 0.42 in Makunouchi winning percentage, Toki 0.47 Tochinonada 0.47 and so on. Having more than 0.50 is rather quite impressive. I think Wakanoyama could have a rough basho though...

Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted March 9, 2003 Wow. What a positive response for Shimotori. Perhaps I will add him as a reserve rikishi in benchsumo? I will definitely keep your opinions in mind when picking his bouts in the various sumo games. Thank you :-Q
