Asashouryuu back on form..

Recommended Posts

After a day's rest, Asashouryuu set out for Isenoumi-beya for degeiko. there were no less than 12 sekitori present, including Chiyotaikai and Tochiazuma. He gave shin-Komusubi Shimotori a present- his favorite tsuriotoshi move, proving to everyone that he's in good shape... 21 bouts against Shimotori and others, but no Ozeki-Yokozuna bouts. Left shoulder injured Tochiazuma had 23 bouts, and left calf injured Chiyotaikai had 16.

After completing his first de-geiko this pre-basho Asashouryuu said " I still have some uneasiness in my back, which hampers my moves, but from here on I'll be adjusting".

He seemed at ease and didn't seem worried in the least .

Poor Shimotori.......

i love Asa when he uses that kimarite....... (Eh?)

21 bouts (i wonder how many did he win...) is a good number for an "injured" Asashoryu.

I am back to being optimistic about his yusho..... :-|

Hmm, strong kimarite against anyone, and Shimotori is no slouch mentally like other rikishi who will not be named here.

I do too, but you know, I kinda miss his ashitori. I suppose he has no reason to resort to that trick now that his sumo is so much better the the competition's, but it would be really nice to see him pull off another one against the likes of Kaio or Chiyotaikai.

i think that the case is not that he doesn't "have" to resort to that technique any more, rather than he would prefer to loose a bout than to deal with the bitching about a yokozuna resorting to tricks like that......

but that's just my opinion.......

Why do you think ashitory is not worthy of yokozuna? Getting hold of opponents legs during a bout requires from a wrestler a lot of skills, speed and power. I would even go so far as to say, not any rikishi can perform ashitori. Especially in sumo there is always a danger being henka-ed doing techniques like this. So. I wouldn't write this kimarite down to a 'trick'.

i BELIEVE that a Yokozuna has to be a master of all kimarite and use/practice them often in the dohyo......

but this is not everybody's opinion.......... :-|

a lot of "classic" sumo fans believe that a Yokozuna has to play yotsu-sumo and win his games by moving forward and showing total dominance in the dohyo.

the characterisation of ashitori as a "tricky" move was reffering to them and their bitching......

Kyokushyzan has received a lot of critisism about his sumo "tricks" but my opinion is ....... "get in the dohyo and beat him".Play your "tricks"-free sumo and dominate.

Mongolian fighters in general use a lot of different techniques because of their wrestling past.I like them all very much because they offer exciting moments from time to time during the bashos.......

and don't forget....all this moves are in the books......anyone who can, should use them......... (Eh?)

Some more details-Asashouryuu used tsuriotoshi TWICE against Shimotori. There were 14 Sekitori from 7 heyas. At the beginning, everything was quite calm. Then, Asa was slightly cut in the left eyelid by Shimotori. That's when "the color of his eyes changed", as the reporter put it.. It seems Asashouryuu called out to Shimotori "Hey you!!! Come here!!" Chiyotaikai was heard saying "I had a feeling he would be going for it.."

He did it on his 9th bout of the day. He picked up the 150 kilo Shimotori by the mawashi and threw him down like a piece of meat. In his 19th bout of the day, he came from behind and slammed him down again. Even Tochiazuma who was standing nearby, stared in awe. Shimotori had 15 grueling bouts with Asa in all forms and shapes, and lost them all. (Asa won all of his 21 matches, BTW) "I was withholding my strength, so he succeeeded in doing that. But he's really strong!!", said Shimotori, later, seemingly frightened out of his wits by this display. Kotomitsuki, who lost by tsuriotoshi to Asa last Basho, said to Shimotori- "My sympathies", as if he had seen a ghost. Chiyotaikai asked Shimotori if he was OK, after the "treatment".

Yesterday, Asashouryuu decided on degeiko-ing, saying, "I need the fighting spirit". Today , he added, "That was good. The guy is now Komusubi. He's got to do really serious keiko!! The other Ozekis were being careful about joining, I guess..", implying that the tsuriotoshis were out of "an expression of affection" and were in no way meant to demean Shimotori. His left eyelid was a bit swollen from the collision with Shimotori, so he was hurt a bit as well . "So what?? Now my eyes are even narrower!!", he joked. His big smile showed he was quite pleased with the workout.

The feeling of the reporter was that Asashouryuu had two purposes in going for degeiko:

To assess his aites' strength, and to instill fear in the heart of the meek, by going all out. He even gave his aites an extra shove here and there after winning (dame-oshi) He approached Shimotori with his bloodied eyelid and said. " The pain this Basho is big. Thanks!!", threateningly. Shimotori was apparently pretty rattled by this.

Asa seemed to be trying to prove that regardless of his waist and back injuries, he's going for that yusho, and he won't be stopped by anyone.

Tochiazuma was 19-4 in his bouts at the same place. He seemed to be favoring his left shoulder, but had a lot of bouts, which is usual for him. Aiming for another tsunatori run, he said "I'm in great shape, but that left shoulder is a bit..".

Ashitori is, in my opinion, an excellent technique. I love to see it happen, and I know of two occasions where Asashoryu has used it effectively. It It is however, a gamble. Its success depends quite a bit on the opponents tachiai. No matter how well the technique is excecuted, it can fail (don't even think of trying it against Tochiazuma). When faced with someone who your chances of beating useing "classic" sumo are low, sometimes this kind of gamble is worth it. But its probably not the technique to use against someone you can expect to beat anyways. While it would be very entertaining to watch. If I were in Asashoryu's tabi, I'd put that technique in the drawer and pull it out in a time of desparation (fighting with injury, just turned 35, etc...) And yes, the unreasonably anti-Asashoryu Japanese media would likely have a blast if he ever used it.

I hope Chiyotaikai and Kaio exhibit the same fighting spirit as Asashoryu come basho time. (Nodding yes...)

check out the thread about Kaio's statements on Asa.

it will bring down your hopes .................
