Jonosuke 28 Posted September 15, 2008 Kakizoe (2-0) over Kasugao by oshidashi, 7.3 sec ----------------------------------------------------------- (After failing to four shikiri at tachiai against Kasugao and getting scolded by his own heya's Fujishima oyakata, sitting as a dohyo judge) "It's all my fault...I was too early. It was really bad." (Not only he has to deal with former Musoyama back at the heya but also his shisho and new chairman, Musashigawa oyakata, "I will personally give him a reprimand!") Fujishima oyakata, Dohyo Judge and Musashigawa Beya oyakata --------------------------------------------------------------------------- (On Kakizoe) "We've been telling him countless times back at our heya training dohyo. He is just too self-centered. If he doesn't want to meet his opponent half way then we should just give him a loss. This is really embarrassing." Hanaregoma oyakata, Director of Judging and Dohyo Judges ---------------------------------------------------------------------- (On repeated shikiri time infractions) "We intend to keep stopping bouts and keep cautioning them. I figure if they get sick of us telling them then they will naturally have to follow the rule." "When you get matta that many times, the flow gets real bad," a rikishi commented. Tamaarashi (1-1) over Takekaze by oshidashi, 3.3 sec ---------------------------------------------------------------- (Getting his first win in his Makuuchi debut basho) "I am hoping I can face Takamisakari-zeki soon so I can get his Kensho." Iwakiyama (1-1) losing to Hokutoriki by oshitaoshi, 7.5 sec -------------------------------------------------------------------- (Injuring his right ankle ligaments, appear to heading into kyujo) "I fell down with all my weight on my right foot. I have some pain still. It may not be possible to come back tomorrow but I will talk to my shisho tomorrow morning. Even if I have to withdraw from tomorrow, I hope to come back at a later stage." Aminishiki (0-2) losing to Goeido by yorikiri, 8.4 sec ------------------------------------------------------------ (Starting the basho with two straight losses and told if he could win one, things may change) "The point is, if I could ever and even win one at all...." Kaio (1-1) over Asasekiryu by yorikiri, 13.3 sec ------------------------------------------------------ (Another record in the books with his 1500th appearance) "Hehehe...you guys keep bringing up records again. Just like always, it doesn't matter at all one bit. I really don't care about it one way or another." Baruto (1-1) over Kotooshu by yorikiri, 3.6 sec ------------------------------------------------------ (Winning the battle of titans) "I was real psyched up for this one. Like saying to myself I want to win, I want to.win....." (Any pressure being a Sanyaku?) "Nah. I've been sleeping like 10 hours. I've been eating a good size chanko and meals too." (On still in midst of bouts with top ranking rikishi) "Well I figured I had to win one just about now." Kotomitsuki (2-0) over Kyokutenho by uchimuso, 9.5 sec ----------------------------------------------------------------- (Displaying a well executed Uchimuso move) "I am not that good at throws you know. This one happens to be one of my favorites. I feel good, real good." Chiyotaikai (2-0) over Kisenosato by oshidashi, 4.0 sec ---------------------------------------------------------------- (Overwhelming Kisenosato with his quick attack) "I had a total complete control out of tachiai." (On shikiri problems other rikishi have been encountering) "Well as far as I am concerned, Kisenosato put his hands down too quickly. Since I am not concerned about it slightest, I had a big advantage." Asashoryu (2-0) over Kotoshogiku by sukuinage, 23.7 sec ------------------------------------------------------------------- (Calmly taking down Gaburi Shogiku with a sukuinage) "I went with a moro-zashi to stop him from moving into me. I figured there was no point in rushing things. Perhaps today I should have first got the mawashi and then create my flow from there. But I think I am showing a sumo that I am capable of right now." "I still have a pain in my left elbow. Not sure what the real condition is though." Miyabiyama (0-2) losing to Hakuho by okuridashi, 10.1 sec ------------------------------------------------------------------ (Felt he had a good chance of beating Hakuho) "If he did a pull one more time...." "I thought it was a pretty good sumo for me but when you think about it after all, I could find no opening to get the win..." Hakuho (2-0) over Miyabiyama --------------------------------------- (Confusions and anxiety swirling around almost all rikishi on the new tachiai rule, leading the way by executing a model shikiri and sumo, today showing a perfect yokozuna-like sumo to Miyabiyama) "I went with a flow. I didn't have any plan to get the mawashi. I figure a yokozuna shouldn't go to with any prior strategy. Perhaps it wasn't as good sumo today." "I am aspiring to be a rikishi who can compete well with Migi or Hidari yotsu sumo or Oshi-zumo, from close or far. I want to take them all in whatever style they have. I am preparing myself to respond in any way I can." (On a 17 bout winning streak) "I haven't been thinking about it but if you remind me about it, I guess that's true." Kumagatani oyakata, Hakuho's shisho ------------------------------------------- "Comparing him to some time ago, he is competing much more calmer now." Katayama, Makushita West 5 (1-0, over Tokusegawa by yorikiri on Day 1) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (29 year old from Onomatsu Beya fell out of sekitori rank for the first time since the 2004 Nagoya Basho) "I was really nervous prior to the bout. I figured it would go that way so I prepared myself getting ready by doing more training sessions." (Now without the oicho and tsukebito) "Sure I do miss it. After all I have been a sekitori for four years. But I just want to get back to Makuuchi and compete in front of full crowd hearing all the cheers. This basho decides for me one way or another whether I can do that once more." Records: Day 1 Dejima - 1,000th Career appearance Miyabiyama - 800th Makuuchi appearance Aminishiki - 700th Makuuchi appearance Day 2 Kaio - 1,500th Career appearance Kyokai News Briefs: Kyokai announced they would make a couple of changes to their charter to add external directors and auditors. Gusoyama 104 Posted September 16, 2008 Kumagatani oyakata, Hakuho's shisho------------------------------------------- "Comparing him to some time ago, he is competing much more calmer now." I actually think he's returning to his form when he was first coming up into Juryo/Makuuchi. A free flowing, supple "quiet power" type of sumo. Loved it then, love it now.
