Erkhembulgan 0 Posted May 25, 2008 Why would a Bulgarian citizen sing the Japanese anthem? Why would anyone sing a foreign anthem? Ask Asashoryu. He does. And makes himself an idiot once again in the process. WTF! Almost all foreign-born yokozunas did it in order to show their respect to the country which gave them a lot. It's stupid to think that Asashoryu or Kotooshu are not patriots because they sing Japanese anthem.

HenryK 38 Posted May 26, 2008 If an anthem is just another song to you, you might as well sing the latest Britney song instead of it. Naaaah. Most anthems are much better music. Ever heard the Russian anthem? Or the former East German one? Sends shudders down your spine. If I were a foreign rikishi, I'd appreciate Japan by learning the language and culture as well as I could, serve NSK as well as I could and gave my best every time on the dohyo. There would be no need for something as superficial as singing a foreign anthem. It would look ridiculous to me if a foreigner were to sing Maamme and not because the song as a musical piece is putrid to be diplomatic. Well, not to me, and not to themselves either, it seems. Kotooshu himself made him what he is. Still there wouldn't be an Ozeki and yusho winner Kotooshu without Japan and without Ozumo?
That-Satsu-Guy 1 Posted June 6, 2008 Yes, I'm American. What of it?North America is home of the NHL. Teams from America and Canada play each other often. Usually the same person sings the American and Canadian national anthem, most likely not a dual citizen. I have seen Russian, and yes, Finnish, members of those teams sing along with the anthem as well. I never thought of singing it as anything more than a gesture of respect for the host country. As long as there are friendly relations between the countries, what is wrong with an American, or a Bulgarian, singing the Japanese national anthem? Great flaming hockey pucks! Canada is losing it's anthem! http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news?slug=cp-n...p&type=lgns
Harry 67 Posted June 6, 2008 Great flaming hockey pucks!Canada is losing it's anthem! http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news?slug=cp-n...p&type=lgns Ahem, Canada could be losing it's "other" anthem ;-) What that story doesn't mention is that the music publishing company who owns the song is suing the CBC for some use of the song. That makes it difficult to strike a new deal!

The two national anthems at the begining you can't miss, but I thought it was all organ music and glam rock after that. "We are the Champions!"

Unless you've watched a game on CBC (the Canadian Broadcast Company, kind of like PBS), you probably haven't heard the theme song to "Hockey Night in Canada". It was written 40 years ago, and sounds like it but its still kind of catchy. You're right though, "We are the champions", "We will rock you", "Another one bites the dust" from glam rock Queen, 2Unlimited "No Limit", etc. are quite popular. There are a bunch of CDs out there, "Jock Rock" which has the popular sports arena glam rock and "Jock Jams" which has the popular sports arena '90s "Pump Up the Jam" dance, house, hip-hop, disco music etc. Wikipedia to the rescue: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jock_Jams http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jock_Rock
