Some Makuuchi day 10 comments

Short impressions of the bouts:

Gojoro simply hatakomied Tochinohana.

Yotsukasa chased Akinoshima around with powerful oshi. To Akinoshima's credit he fought with determination and didn't give up easily. Yotsukasa was too strong though and finally ousted Akinoshima to his 7th loss.

Sekiryu seemed angry and slapped Hoku down twice and once more when he was already on the ground.

Aminishiki was the boss with good tachi-ai followed by nice yank and okuridashi.

Takanotsuru has ran out of steam. Weak performance and loss to Tamarikido.

Shuzan won with good sumo for a change.

Iwakiyama blocked Tsuumi's throw attempt nicely and won with oshidashi.

Toki was very spirited today blasting into Kinka and almost driving him out. Kinka countered but Toki kept the pressure and sent Kinka down. Oshitaoshi.

Kotoryu and MIyabiyama had a long calm pushing battle which ended with a big push from Miya sending Koto far into audience. Hopefully no osteoporosis present at the scene of sudden rikishi airmail arrival.

Kaiho pulled down Buyuzan.

Kasugao twisted Waka down with kotenage.

ODD Kotonowaka-bout! One of the oddest I have seen. After the tachi-ai Koto attacked with mean nodowa and Taikai like de-ashi and looked to be on his way to very non-Kotonowaka like victory but at the tawara Nada was able to pivot a bit and Koto's momentum took him over before Nada stepped out. Kotonowaka is Kotonowaka. One of a kind.

Takamisakari stopped Dejima's de-ashi after a bit of circling. Then looked to be certain winner as Deji had upright and quite gripless situation but Dejima's legs seem very strong again and he was able to prolong the bout significantly before Sakari finally escorted him out with yorikiri to the delight of the audience.

Tenho started well and was in upper hand but Tosa turned the table with strong pivot and won with yorikiri.

Kotomitsuki's tachi-ai was VERY hard again and this time it carried through the bout. Nami never got a grip and despite a close call and VERY confused gyoji the mono-ii backed up gyoji's guess and Kotomitsuki survives another day without make-koshi.

Chiyotaikai bowed the win as Shimotori chest cartilage (must be the rib-sternum cartilage joints) prevented him from fighting. 3 weeks to recovery was reported.

Kaio looked ok and did good grip pursuing but slipped on the dohyo and lost in annoying manner. He pounded the dohyo with his fist in great disgust. I am not sure if Waka contributed to that slip at all.

Yotsukasa seems good with 7 wins after 3 straight losses. He has a funny name too.

Akinoshima will have another Juryo rikishi tomorrow, as he still has a chance of retaining his Maegashira spot.

I watched the live video today for the first time (had to download Media Player 9 and hammer the server like 30 times before I finally got in). I already said to myself "This is the end of Tosanoumi", but Kyokutenho again let the bout slip right out of his hands...

That bout required a tori-naoshi. It was too close and too awkward

LOL, it's been a year since Taikai managed to win on day 10. Stupid Taikai. I was so anxious, knowing that today is also Shimotori's birthday. And then I found out about the kyujo. Some luck for Taikai, but still no win on day 10 ;)

Kaio looked ok and did good grip pursuing but slipped on the dohyo and lost in annoying manner. He pounded the dohyo with his fist in great disgust. I am not sure if Waka contributed to that slip at all.

Well, he did pull Kaio, but Kaio did not fall until he tried to turn around and attack Sato for what would surely plummet him out of the ring. Unlucky Kaio. He's virtually out of the race now, and the struggle for kachi-koshi continues. I just hope he gets it before he needs to face Taikai and Shoryu (should be days 13 and 14).

That means Kaio needs to win two now, including tomorrow against Kotoryu. Talking about Kotoryu - 5-5 after 5-0, that's not good. Still, I'd rather see him make-koshi than Kaio.

I suppose you tried accessing the feed shortly before the makuuchi bouts began? If possible, try some 90 minutes earlier to see the five last makushita bouts, whole juryo and then makuuchi. You can almost always get perfect feed then with fast enough connection (98 Kbit/sec is the maximum needed, I think). I noticed today my problems during the last two days (when I seemed to receive only audio) were because of my own mistake. (Cursing aloud...)  (Blush...)

This is the address to be put onto the browser address bar:

mms://live.sumo.or.jp/sumolive/

Now I'll assemble a PC to my uncle. (Laughing...)

I disagree strongly on this, especially since you don't have anything to back up your comment other than your own viewing of the stream. Here is a nice picture which shows pretty clearly that a torinaoshi would have been an insult to Kotomitsuki's fighting spirit:

You can clearly see that Kotomitsuki still has a foot touching inside the dohyō while Nami is standing with one foot outside the dohyō. Nami even already has his weight on this foot and is in the process of lifting up the other foot from the bales. No part from Kotomitsuki is below dohyō level. The arm you can see dangling down between Nami's legs belongs to a bulky rikishi sitting ringside.

Odd..isn't there a guy called Asashouryuu who is partaking in the proceedings? What is the penalty for "Asahouryuu denial"?

And Tamanoshima? Deserveth not a mention he?

First of all, I posted my comments only after viewing the slow motion replay several times, so please.

You are of course 100% right that Nami stepped outside before Mickey crashed below the dohyo level, but Mickey's body was long ago dead.

Ok, I stand corrected. Sorry for that. You having NHK TV or what? I'm curious...

But to the second point I just have to say: You are wrong. A body NEVER is dead if the foot is still touching the dohyō. I think this a point I am pretty confident in making, and a tori-naoshi would be a blatant error since in the replay really a LONG time was between Nami and Mitsuki touching outside. Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong here.

there is a contradicting example: that bout between Takanonami and Asashoryu, which I mentioned earlier. There you could clearly see Takanonami stepping outside, while Asashoryu's left foot was still inside, and yet no one questioned the referee's decision to give it to Nami, according to the dead body rule.

Hmm, yes, I remember this bout quite good. I say, a whole lot of people questioned the gyōji's decision. It was a topic in the newspapers. It was discussed in the Sumo Mailing List. But you are right, this really was a close decision, much more close than today's question.
