Manekineko 200 Posted November 4, 2002 Tallest first: young Bulgarian recruit (whose name escapes me) has joined Sadogatake-beya and passed physical exam. He's the tallest recruit ever, 202 cm tall, and will asume shikona Kotooshu (Oshu = Europe). And in Ozumo magazine from September this year, three European rikishi are first among the 'handsome young men of the dohyo' (scans from Sumo Now page) Amuru (Russia), 19 years old: Kokkai (Georgia), 21 years old: Takanoyama (Czech), 19 years old: 8-O Edit: I've removed the pictures, since I needed my limited web-space for other purposes... If you want to see them, mail me!
Tony 16 Posted November 4, 2002 Do you have heights and weights of these rikishi ( so except Kotooshu )?
Manekineko 200 Posted November 5, 2002 From the same article: Amuru - 192 cm, 91 kg Kokkai - 187,5 cm, 145 kg Takanoyama - 186 cm, 90 kg
Manekineko 200 Posted November 17, 2002 Nakabi report: Europeans are doing quite well this basho... Czech Takanoyama won today, and now has a comfortable 3-1 result at Jonidan 19 west. Two Russians in Jonidan, Hakurozan (Jd28w) and Amuru (Jd65w) also have 3-1 results. Moving up to Sandanme, the first Russian to join Ozumo (of the recent crop, that is), Orora (Sd85e) is also 3-1, having won today. Roho, the Russian Phoenix, is 4-0 at Sandanme 32 w, and is undefeated in his sumo career so far. Finaly, Georgian Kokkai is struggling in the top makushita, with an even 2-2 result at Makushita 9 east. He was Ms1w last basho, at the gates of sekitoridom (salaried ranks, juryo and above), but went only 2-5. I belive that after some adjustment to fiercer opposition this far up the banzuke, he'll become a sekitori next year. Good luck to him! All these results are from the Custom Sumo Results page, which translates the data from official Nihon Sumo Kyokai page. Since maezumo bouts aren't included, I can't report anything about the Bulgarian, Kotooshu...
Hoshifransu 0 Posted November 17, 2002 Amuru - 192 cm, 91 kgKokkai - 187,5 cm, 145 kg Takanoyama - 186 cm, 90 kg Except Kokkai, the others will have to gain much more weight to be competitive. And the tall Bulgarian too ! He seems so slim on the photo ! 202 cm could make 240 kilos, for example, like Akebono ! I hope the Bulgarian loves Japanese food !? :~-( (Sigh...) Yubiquitoyama 4 Posted November 17, 2002 Moving up to Sandanme, the first Russian to join Ozumo (of the recent crop, that is), Orora (Sd85e) is also 3-1, having won today. I might add that Orora, who at hatsu-dohyo was already a giant at 200kg and 190cm has not lost any weight at all. In fact, it was reported before the basho he is currently the second heaviest rikishi in Ozumo behind 237kg Musashimaru, at 220kg. If I understood the article correctly (which is in no way certain...) his oyakata Kitanoumi expected him to grow more, since his parents were bigger than him... (!!! ) . (Edit:) Hehe, I doubt Hoshifransu, you included Orora in your statement about gaining a lot of weight (Sigh...)
Rijicho 6 Posted November 17, 2002 I just added Spoilers! warning into the topic title for principle's sake. (Sigh...)
Manekineko 200 Posted November 17, 2002 Gomen, Rijicho... :-P I considered whether this was spoiler-worthy news, but since sumo ML doesn't treat non-sekitori results as spoilers, neither did I. About gaining weight: certainly they need weight, but even more they need technique, and muscles in right places. I haven't been following their careers very closely, but here are some unfounded guesses. Takanoyama is from Naruto-beya, and my guess is he follows the same weight-training regime as T'waka and W'sato. So he should still be among slimmer rikishi when (if) he reaches juryo. I picture him having Takanowaka-like build, if only because they are both pretty-boy tipe. (Happy...) Wrestling style? Yotsu, perhaps. Too bad I don't know the stats on brothers Roho and Hakurozan. Roho is in Taiho-beya, soon to be Takatoriki's heya. Whether that means that he will develop into a mean slapper, only time will tell. On a picture of three Russians together, taken on their entry into pro-sumo, Amuru looks the tallest (with 192 cm it's no wonder), Roho is a bit smaller, and Hakurozan still a bit smaller. But they should both be above 180 cm. Roho and Hakurozan also look bulkier than Amuru, and I think the two of them are ex-amateur sumo-wrestlers, while Amuru wasn't. Orora might be big, but he still doesn't know how to use his bulk with success, he's been hovering in Sandanme for a while now. I think this approach (I joined sumo 'cause I'm big) is not a good one... most of the current makuuchi rikishi were slim when they started. It's not fat that counts in sumo, it's heavy muscle cloaked in some (or lots, if you're Musa) of fat. Kotooshu (who, BTW likes yoghurt and thinks he can still grow a few cm) joined Sadogatake-beya, so he might develop into another Kotonowaka, for example. Sadogatake-beya rikishi prefer yotsu, right? Or he might develop Takanonami-like 'slim' physique. Akebono was really too bulky on too thin legs, so that wouldn't be the ideal goal for Kotooshu. I know you like big and strong rikishi, Hoshifransu, and I prefer muscular and technical, so we both project our (dis)likings... :-P How about their prospects? Kokkai is certainly capable of becoming sekitori. Roho is tearing through the banzuke, so I guess he'll manage it too. About the others, I'm not so certain. Takanoyama has problems reaching sandanme, Amuru's progress is not spectacular... They all look physicaly capable, but it is question of their mental strength. How long will they take the hard life of deshi if no immediate success is possible? How hungry are they? If they half the hunger and will of a certain thin and light-weight mongolian sumotori, no lack of weight will stop them. (Sigh...) Here's to European invasion of Makuuchi! (Drinking beer...) Actually, I believe that picture was lying since Roho was in May listed as 193cm/130kg and Hakurozan as 189cm/126kg. They are far from short (Sigh...) Regarding Orora I don't think it is in itself anything wrong to enter sumo although already big, and I definitely think such a rikishi also can have some future if he also can gain some muscle. The actual reason why someone starts sumo almost certainly is more or less different between every different rikishi and I suppose it's up to each and every one of them to have their own approach. I assume the life in the heya will change their views in one way or another anyway, eventually. Hopefully to the better :-P

About the others, I'm not so certain. Takanoyama has problems reaching sandanme, Amuru's progress is not spectacular... Actually, Amuuru is doing OK-he's 13-5 career, only one behind Hakurozan's 14-4.Much better than Oorora's 58-51, although the fattest seems to have gotten his groove-he's at his highest rank and 3-1.. Of course, anyone visiting MY Foreigners site(with all due respect to the awesome Custom Results page..) sees all the foreigners and their stats(career, highest rank..etc..) I always feel my site isn't getting the respect it should, but don't we all..(Sigh...)))
Manekineko 200 Posted November 18, 2002 Actually, Amuuru is doing OK-he's 13-5 career, only one behind Hakurozan's 14-4. Granted, but it's to early to tell for both Amuru and Hakurozan whether they'll keep climbing or stall. Both of them are certainly much better than my second adoptee (as yet unofficial, I'm waiting for him to reach jonidan), Kotokaneko, who strung an impressive record of 4 consecutive make-koshi since his hatsu-dohyo. It seems I'll wait a bit longer for him to reach jonidan... although his cumulative 6-15 result actually got him promoted from jonokuchi 49 to 26! Oh yes, he went makekoshi this basho, too... :p Ganbare, 'Kaneko! edit: Hamanoshima also went mk in makushita... (Hmmm...)
Hoshifransu 0 Posted November 18, 2002 I always feel my site isn't getting the respect it should, but don't we all Hey, your pages are very often those I visited at first when I connect to internet. I'm focused on Sentoryu, Hoshitango, Kokkai's results, more than current boring makuuchi division ! You've got at least one dayly hit from me on both of your pages (foreign wrestlers and makushita wrestlers) Congratulations for your work, very courageous work to put this on-line, day after day with all your quotes, all these entertaining colors ! Don't change nothing ! I'm a fan ! And I read Sentoryu himself was too ! (Hehe...)
Hoshifransu 0 Posted November 18, 2002 Roho makes a very impressive 5-0 currently, which put his own record to an unbelievable 19-0, and possibly, a third zensho in a row, to him ... He will hit the makuuchi very soon like a meteor ! Just wait & see ! BTW, do you know that Kagamifuji who is Jonokuchi 41 currently, aged of only 15 years, coming from Texas ? I've just found a link and that picture : and I read his name's Jason Walker, his tall is 178 cm for 132 kg and he was born on 1987-05-14. Thanks again to Kintamayama-zeki for his impressive dayly work !
