Tumppi 0 Posted August 16, 2003 (edited) A great basho once again! Very exciting! With Chiyotaikai and Kaio in the final I couldn't lose as they're both my favourites! A great fight that was! (Sign of approval) I hope they both make it for Yokozuna. It was hard to stay away from sumo on the internet etc but I think it was worth it. Hopefully I can catch up now.. but the next basho begins soon I guess, just a few weeks from now. I wonder how long it will take for Eurosport to broadcast the Aki? I bet it takes another 2 months And they could also make sumo closer to prime time as it isn't on very often. :-( And once again I have to thank Christer L Edited August 16, 2003 by Tumppi

Naifuzan 1 Posted August 16, 2003 Yeah, Toki's been amazing. Wouldnt it be great if he had a good basho as komusubi as well? I cant find the Toki smiley in the smilies list. Am I blind or is it missing? Would be nice to have that one + the kasuganishiki smiley (Sign of approval)
Usagi 40 Posted August 17, 2003 I only follow the Juryo and lower divisions through the tournaments, that are not broadcast on TV. But I wait for Eurosport's broadcast to watch the Makuuchi. I don't want to see the fights in minor quality on a small monitor. Anyway, I think there could have been a little more about Asashoryu's foul and the reaction of the crowd in the next days of the basho. German comentator Alexander von der Groeben is always much fun to listen to, though he may not know that much about sumo. But he is very good in not revealing too much. The way, sumo is treated by Eurosport, I fear it won't be long, till it finally drops out of the program. They should at least broadcast a replay on the afternoon to reach the kids and other folks who do not have the time, to watch TV at midnight. A major suprise was Toki's more intelligent performance. Kaious win in the final match was a suprise as well.
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted August 17, 2003 Am I blind or is it missing? Missing. Those were ad hoc emoticons created for chatting purposes but I might add them to the forum side as well.
Tumppi 0 Posted August 17, 2003 Yeah, Toki's been amazing. Wouldnt it be great if he had a good basho as komusubi as well? Yes, at one point when Toki went over 10 losses I was worried he might drop to Juryo soon, boy was I wrong!

That's smart to follow only Juryo during the basho but aren't you just bound to run into Makuuchi results as well? Sumo is usually on only 1 hour a day on Eurosport so I wouldn't think it would be very hard to fit it in somewhere in the afternoon.
Naifuzan 1 Posted August 17, 2003 After having watching a few bashos on the live feed I must say I find it way superior to waiting and watching it on eurosport. The main reason is that you get to see all the matches, all the preparations before the matches, and you get all the daily news on the sumo forum, wich really adds exitement. + You can play sumo games. Yeah I'd like to try those games, must be fun! Say, how do you watch it "live"? I mean is there some place where the videos of the bouts are uploaded every day during the basho? Or where do you get to see them? I'd like to try watching it (almost) live sometime.
Chiyozakura 163 Posted August 17, 2003 I have completely stopped watching Sumo on Eurosport. They broadcast the basho that late that I have usually finished watching the TV Japan tapes until then. Plus I can only get the German commentary, and Alexander von der Groeben's Shikona speaking ability is next to zero. I still cannot understand how he can commentate Sumo for more than eight years without getting any idea of Japanese language. Plus all he does is add the information from his papers, he usually does not commentate the matches and if, he misses the decisive points. SIGH....
Naifuzan 1 Posted August 17, 2003 The sumo association broadcasts the bashos live on the internet. You just start your media player and press crtl+O and type in mms://live.sumo.or.jp/sumolive/ You can also download most matches here

Does it mean I have to be here a certain time of the day? Or can I watch it any time? And how often does banzuke update the movies? Daily during a basho? Zentoryu 154 Posted August 17, 2003 (edited) Ok, so how does that mms work? Does it mean I have to be here a certain time of the day? Or can I watch it any time? Well, it's a live broadcast only. So you would have to be there somewhere between 12:00 and 2:00pm Japan time when the broadcast starts (I don't know how that translates to your local time). They usually pick up the action with the Juryo dohyo-iri and the last of the Makushita bouts, followed by Juryo and then Makuuchi action. The video quality isn't the best in the world, but as mentioned earlier, you get to see a lot of the pre bout rituals that you don't normally see elsewhere. Dale's videos, which are taken from TV Japan's live broadcast and uploaded to his website every day, are usually up within 6 to 12 hours of the end of a particular day's action. They are also available for viewing anytime during the tournament. He also has videos available from most of the basho dating back to early 2000. I prefer the latter as the video quality is much better. Plus the announcers are pretty good as well. Edited August 17, 2003 by Zentoryu

Usagi 40 Posted August 18, 2003 http://dohyo.com/sumomovies/nagoya2003/movies.html There you can find the Juryo-Matches and many Makushita-Bouts since last basho. It is better to watch those then the live-broadcast on the NSK-site, if you use a modem. Better quality and the upload is rather quick.

The quality certainly is far better than on a modem, but (as I made the recording and cutting for those movies) I still would like the streaming to have a better and more stable performance (no jitters, better sound), especially in the Makushita section. I also prefer the stream over Eurosport, because there is no announcer. The German broadcast has an announcer who talks non-stop which makes it difficult to hear the sounds of the audience, the rikishi and the gyoji which are much more important to me.
