Doitsuyama 1,259 Posted March 13, 2003 The three leaders Chiyotaikai, Kotoryu and Jumonji continue to win, as does Yokozuna Asashoryu. Other than this there were several surprises today with Kaio, Kotomitsuki, Wakanosato, Kyokutenho, Miyabiyama and Takamisakari losing. Is Musoyama's first win this basho a surprise? I don't think so. Akinoshima got his first win too, while Kasugao and Tochinohana stay winless. It looks like the field of true Makuuchi yusho contenders is already down to just Chiyotaikai and Asashoryu. The other rikishi with no or one loss aren't real contenders, I think. In Juryo Tochisakae is the sole leader now after defeating Kakizoe, while Hamanishiki lost a good bout to Harunoyama and is one win behind together with Asanowaka and Hayateumi. -- Doitsuyama Day 5 Juryo Ms3e Towanoyama (1-2) yorikiri J13w Hidenokuni (1-4) J13e Kotonomine (3-2) yorikiri Ms2w Sumanofuji (2-1) J9w Dewanofuji (2-3) oshidashi J12e Tomikaze (2-3) J10w Harunoyama (3-2) yoritaoshi J9e Hamanishiki (4-1) J8w Wakatoba (2-3) uwatenage J10e Kitazakura (2-3) J8e Tochisakae (5-0) tsukiotoshi J11e Kakizoe (3-2) J4w Ushiomaru (3-2) oshidashi J3w Aogiyama (2-3) J3e Asanowaka (4-1) oshidashi J7e Wakakosho (3-2) J6w Hayateumi (4-1) shitatedashinage J2w Otsukasa (3-2) J2e Kobo (3-2) okuridashi J5e Senshuyama (2-3) J1w Yotsukasa (2-3) oshidashi J6e Gokenzan (0-5) J4e Oginishiki (2-3) shitatenage J1e Komahikari (1-4) Makuuchi M12w Akinoshima (1-4) yorikiri M15e Tochinohana (0-5) M14w Jumonji (5-0) oshidashi M12e Kinkaiyama (2-3) M11w Tamarikido (3-2) yorikiri M14e Gojoro (3-2) M10w Buyuzan (3-2) hikkake M13e Kasuganishiki (2-3) M11e Hokutoriki (4-1) oshitaoshi M9e Aminishiki (2-3) M10e Asasekiryu (2-3) yorikiri M8w Takanotsuru (2-3) M6w Toki (2-3) hikiotoshi M9w Miyabiyama (3-2) M5e Kotoryu (5-0) tsukiotoshi M8e Tokitsuumi (3-2) M4w Tamanoshima (4-1) yorikiri M7w Kyokushuzan (3-2) M3w Kotonowaka (2-3) yorikiri M7e Kasugao (0-5) M6e Iwakiyama (3-2) kotenage M2w Takamisakari (1-4) M5w Kaiho (2-3) kakenage M1w Kyokutenho (3-2) M4e Wakanoyama (2-3) oshidashi S2e Wakanosato (3-2) K1w Tosanoumi (3-2) hikiotoshi S1w Kotomitsuki (2-3) O1e Musoyama (1-4) oshidashi M3e Shimotori (1-4) K1e Dejima (3-2) oshidashi O2w Kaio (3-2) O2e Chiyotaikai (5-0) oshidashi M1e Takanonami (2-3) Y1w Asashoryu (4-1) sotogake M2e Tochinonada (2-3) Day 6 Makushita Ms13e Ryuo (1-1) Ms15w Hochiyama (1-1) Ms15e Daimanazuru (2-0) Ms11w Torafusuyama (2-0) Ms12e Asahibenten (1-1) Ms9w Tochifudo (1-1) Ms7e Tamanokuni (2-0) Ms11e Nakao (2-0) Ms6e Kotoiwakuni (1-1) Ms9e Sentoryu (1-1) Juryo J11e Kakizoe (3-2) J13e Kotonomine (3-2) Ms3w Hamanoshima (1-2) J11w Juzan (0-3-2) J10e Kitazakura (2-3) J12e Tomikaze (2-3) J13w Hidenokuni (1-4) J10w Harunoyama (3-2) J7e Wakakosho (3-2) J9w Dewanofuji (2-3) J9e Hamanishiki (4-1) J4w Ushiomaru (3-2) J3e Asanowaka (4-1) J8w Wakatoba (2-3) J8e Tochisakae (5-0) J3w Aogiyama (2-3) J2e Kobo (3-2) J6w Hayateumi (4-1) J6e Gokenzan (0-5) J2w Otsukasa (3-2) J1e Komahikari (1-4) J5e Senshuyama (2-3) J4e Oginishiki (2-3) J1w Yotsukasa (2-3) Makuuchi M13e Kasuganishiki (2-3) M14e Gojoro (3-2) M11e Hokutoriki (4-1) M12e Kinkaiyama (2-3) M15e Tochinohana (0-5) M11w Tamarikido (3-2) M14w Jumonji (5-0) M9w Miyabiyama (3-2) M8e Tokitsuumi (3-2) M12w Akinoshima (1-4) M7e Kasugao (0-5) M10e Asasekiryu (2-3) M6e Iwakiyama (3-2) M9e Aminishiki (2-3) M10w Buyuzan (3-2) M6w Toki (2-3) M8w Takanotsuru (2-3) M5w Kaiho (2-3) M3e Shimotori (1-4) M7w Kyokushuzan (3-2) M1e Takanonami (2-3) M5e Kotoryu (5-0) M4e Wakanoyama (2-3) M1w Kyokutenho (3-2) K1e Dejima (3-2) S1w Kotomitsuki (2-3) S2e Wakanosato (3-2) M3w Kotonowaka (2-3) O2e Chiyotaikai (5-0) K1w Tosanoumi (3-2) O1e Musoyama (1-4) M2e Tochinonada (2-3) M4w Tamanoshima (4-1) O2w Kaio (3-2) Y1w Asashoryu (4-1) M2w Takamisakari (1-4)
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted March 13, 2003 M6e Iwakiyama (3-2) kotenage M2w Takamisakari (1-4) That one caught me by surprise. Maybe I'm partial to Takamisakari and maybe I'm not giving Iwakiyama enough credit, but I was pretty sure Takamisakari would win. :-@ Also cost me a 3 point slot on bench sumo. How good was Iwakiyama's toriteki career?
Manekineko 200 Posted March 13, 2003 I got a favourable impression of Iwaki last basho, when I fully expected him to get Kasugao-like kicking after rocketing up the banzuke, but he finished his 2nd makuuchi basho with respectable 7-8 mk. He's also so ugly he's likeable ;) and he shows strength, stability, and technique. As long as he's healthy, he's very good addition to makuuchi.
Kaikitsune Makoto 210 Posted March 13, 2003 In Juryo Tochisakae is the sole leader now after defeatingKakizoe Tochisakae has been totally dominant in his bouts. Despite some hesitance today, he made Kakizoe look like a deshi he was giving good work out to by simply overpowering him down. Totally dominant force in juryo so far. Healthy Tochisakae doesn't belong to juryo.
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted March 14, 2003 A former college rikish, Iwakiyama was started as Ms60 Tsukedashi Thank you for the summary Yubiquitoyama-zeki: it's exactly what I was looking for. FWIW, I think his bout today againast Takanotsuru should be fairly interesting. He's also so ugly he's likeable :-) That's funny. He's not pretty like Toki, but he's not bad :-( Healthy Tochisakae doesn't belong to juryo. I agree. He's mid to low Maegashira when healthy. But can he stay healthy? I don't think he has the talent to compete with sanyaku rikishi, but he's pretty good otherwise. With Toki, Iwakiyama, Takanotsuru, Shimotori, Tochisakae, Kasugao, Asasekiryu, and others I think we have some very interesting bouts among the mid to low maegashira. It's a pleasure to watch, although sometimes very difficult to predict winners.
