Chiyotaikai and the two Kyokus

Oozeki Chiyotaikai had 24 keiko bouts with Chiyotenzan and others. Instead of using his trademark oshi and tsuki, he used migi-yotsu most of the time. After failing in his bid for Yokozuna last basho, he has decided to widen his technique range. "It's still mediocre yotsu, but I aim to polish it up in the near future." From the 27th (today) and onwards, "I would like to push some big opponents", he said. He plans to go a-keikoing to Tomozuna-beya, straight to the waiting arms of KaioU.(Sanspo)

New Sekiwake Kyokutenhou is in top shape. He had 17 bouts with Kyokushuuzan and Makushita- and -under rikishi and showed overpowering strength against them all, including Shoes-on. Sharp first step and quick seizing of mawashi are the main points he is working on. He is shouting a lot these days as well at keiko. "That's the way it is. I hadn't done that much before", he said, probably loudly. After keiko, he spoke to toddlers who came by to visit the heya, and was very friendly and smiling radiantly. (Sanspo)

You know what I find strange in those Sumo news? How they always say: "XXX had N training bouts with YYY,ZZZ,etc", but rarely they tell what the results were? Any particular reason to that? I mean, if you know the exact number of bouts, surely you know the outcome. (Applauding...) (Eating...)

I do hope Taikai will be successful in his attempts to increase his technique and make Yokozuna-I certainly think there have been many less talented Yokozuna even as he is now.

At least hes got one of the best in the business as his Oyakata the great Chiyonofuji.

Yes, it is strange. They always have the exact number of bouts, sometimes the results of one rikishi, but never how the results are divided, like when Musashimaru is 10-1, who he fought and what was the outcome.

Or that the newspapers to be allowed to continue reporting on sumo training are only allowed to report whatever the oyakata accepts...

Chiyonofuji was a great yokozuna, but I'm not sure he's a great oyakata. Really, how many superstars has Kokonoe stable produced since he became the stable master? Anyone besides Chiyotaikai?

Also, as oyakata, Kokonoe probably is partially responsible for Taikai's failure to rise to yokozuna rank (so far), having been at ozeki for 4.5 years. Even in an individual sport such as sumo, coaches and trainers have great impact.

Anyhow, I do hope, like you, that Chiyotaikai and his oyakata can find the magic formula and finally put Taikai through that big step. That would be big success for both of them.
