  1. I am the happiest person ever! (Punk rocker...) (Bleh!) :-S (Dripping sweat...) (Applauding...) My girlfriend's mother sent me the playstation sumo game! it's called nihon sumo kyokai kounin nihon ozumo, which i gather means nsk's official japanese grand sumo it's made by konami in 2000 and features akebono musashimaru and takanohana (Heart) on the cover. unfortunately i havent been able to play it yet, cuz i need a mod chip (getting it tomorrow). from what i can read of the instructions, i will be an oyakata and will have to train my rikishi :-D i can't wait. anyway, i was wondering if: a) there is anyone else who has this game and can give me some pointers on what certain screens might mean, as my japanese knowledge is limited (especially in the kanji dept- to about 300), so i might not understand many things. b) there is anyone who would like a copy of the game. i would be willing to copy and distribute it at cost to whoever wants it, although it would take a while, cuz i don't personally have a cd burner, and i wouldn't be able to guarantee that it would work. anyway, let me know if you are interested...meanwhile, once i get my mod chip, i wont't be sleeping for a few days/weeks/months....
  2. My boss told me today that he saw on NHK this morning that Musashimaru announced he will be kyujo. BUT-his english isn't perfect, so it's possible that didn't bother to say that it was just something a commentator said (which is a question i didn't think to ask at the time) also, he is old, sometimes he doesn't remember what he ate for lunch, or IF he ate, so he might have gotten the story mixed up. anyway, ill be looking for confirmation online

    Taikai or Kaio

i knew there was a reason i put it there, it was nagging at the back of my mind. also- if they get the jun-yusho, who's getting yusho?

    Taikai or Kaio

i think it's pretty self-explanatory, who do you think will do better in aki: Kaio or Chiyotaikai? I, personally, am deeply tempted to choose Chiyotaikai in my games, but all i see in this forum is people (not to name names) worshipping Kaio. He just barely took the yusho last basho, but it seems that many people think he's almost a lock to take it this basho, even with a healthier Musashimaru, a less-distracted Asashoryu, and, of course Taikai. anyway- who do you pick?
  5. as us gamers make our picks and all fans look forward to the basho, i was hoping we could be helped with some information about the injury status of some rikishi we don't hear much about. we know all the info about moose and asashoryu, but i was wondering about (especially) dejima and aminishiki. i haven't really heard anything about either one of them. has anybody?
  6. my fave is sumo game, because it is simple, but there are many choices (that makes sense, right?) you can spend as much or as little time on it as you like. and i love the stats page. it is very comprehensive and easy to navigate.

    Japanese Exam

what would you like to know about it? there is a website, which i will find and post here, or you can just google jplt or japanese language proficiency test. all i really know about it is that it has 4 levels, it happens once a year, and only takes place in major areas (in canada it only was held in two cities).it cost (i think) $60CDN, aruond $45 USD. i took (and passed) the level 3 jlpt last year, and am planning to take level 2 next year. i was in japan for one year on student exchange, during which time i did very little actual studying of japanese. what i learned mostly came from casual conversations with friends and reading kanji at karaoke. i found the kanji parts very difficult, and i think got around 55% on those sections. the listening sections and the parts where you put in the (ha ga ka ni de) anyway, those sections i found very easy and got 90+% on them. my overall score was around 75% i think. p.s.- we have the same pic- u love aminishiki also?
  8. i, in my very short time playing these games, have found that it seems to be more dificult to move up and down in sumo game, as compared to bench and other games. on the other hand, it seems one doesn't fall so far with a bad record, so i guess it evens out. it's just that i can't help but thinking it will take me 20 years to make it to makuuchi in any of these games. i wish that i had known about them 3 years ago so i could have started near the top. (Applauding...)
  9. i got it from a book called Ripley's Believe it or Not, which is based on tidbits recorded by a guy named Robert Ripley, who travelled the world noting strange things, and is also the basis for a bunch of museums and a tv show. the entire word, from what i can see in the book is: kumarreksituteeskenteleentuvaisehkollaismaisekkuudellisenneskentekuttelemattomam uuksissansakaankopahan hmmm....if this is not true, can i believe any of it? like the guy who hit 2 hole-in-ones in the same season into the 3rd hole, from the 11th tee....
  10. i heard that there is a 100+ letter word in Finnish which means "to bow" is this true? do you actually ever say the word? how long does it take to say? why is it so long????are there other words like that?
  11. moi aussi how do you know these things?
  12. is anyone able to identify the rikishi in this photo? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...&category=31679

    Next Zensho

it seems to me that there are no rikishi currently capable of going zensho, with the exception of a healthy musashimaru, something which, it seems, we will never see again. so i was thinking, when could the next makuuchi zensho possibly happen? im saying 2007 or later. guess we might have to wait a long time to see if im right
  14. taikai will beat umi and :-P . he will take yusho, even if he has to face miyabiyama in a playoff. sure, this prediction isn't really taking a chance, but it's what will happen
  15. and he is further blessed to share a birthday with Takanohana, and, of course, the great Fukunoyama! (You are going off-topic...)
  16. yes, i was thinkig that i might as well try that, although as you say, nothing is likely to come from that. I also figured that i would contact the Canadian Amateur sumo association.
  17. The Boss at the Japanese restaurant where i work has been toying with the idea (originally a joke made by me) of holding a sumo tournament to help gain publicity for our restaurant, and, i suppose, sumo as well. we are thinking that we would likely have to resort to local participants with no prior knowledge of sumo, but were also wondering if anyone knows where we could find at least two 'real" sumos to show the audience what it's all really about. we likely would not be able to pay them with anything more than all the sushi they could eat, but it would serve as good publicity for the sport as well as the restaurant. the event will likely not take place until the spring of 2004, so there is lots of time, and no set date yet. If anyone has information about how i could contact some participants, it would be greatly appreciated.
  18. i believe that i have read that the kinboshi bonus is for the duration of their career, regardless of division, but i can't remember where i read it, so i am unable to double-check
  19. you should find all your answers here: http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/index.php?...=73&hl=swastika
  20. I don't like this decision. In the Shuzan case, it was correct, because he would have lost the match if shoryu had not committed hansoku. however, it is quite possible that there could be a match where a kinboshi is clearly about to occur, when a yokozuna commits hansoku, which would rob the rikishi of his kinboshi. I think that they should consider them on an individual basis.
  21. thank you all
  22. hahaha, moi aussi
  23. that's what i get, too. perhaps we need someone 100% fluent to read it for us, though
  24. yes, i like Doitsuyama's suggestion also. sorry, i did not realize that it was only the score of the three top players, rather than the country's total score. but yeah, i like doitsuyama's idea- it would still give a slight advantage to the more-represented nations, which they deserve, but it would give the smaller nations more of a chance. I think people would take more interest in the prize if there were more nations which had a shot at winning it
  25. are there any good, free programs i can download for typing in japanese? i have been until now using the trial version of njstar, which doesnt self-destruct after the trial period is over, but i have found it does not work with the new msn and various other programs. any suggestions?
