Chiyomaru's temperature is above the acceptable level so he is now kyujo. That's all I know. Undoubtedly, they will test him for the coronavirus. If he has it, the Basho will be immediately canceled. If not, if it's just the regular flu or something else, the Basho will continue, as I understand it.

Old video of Kakuryu announcing his engagement. They now have 2 small children.

Another nice series of wedding, engagement and casual photos of people we know.

A nice romantic group of wedding pictures. (Ignore the audio!).

http://heyaaz.nagioff.com/2020/2020.html (Click on "Miyagino Beya" along the left side). Here is a picture of all the Rikishi in Miyagino Beya with their current ranking. It also shows other people attached to this Heya. When I visited Miyagino Beya during the Aki Basho in 2014, I sat right next to Oyakata Seiji (the white-haired man) and he rarely uttered a word the whole time I was there, as I recall. All of the Rikishi were training but the Oyakata didn't seem to interact with them. At that time, there were no Rikishi in Makuuchi or Juryo other than Hakuho. Ishiura was there but he was in Makushita, and of course Enho wasn't in the picture then. ************* An interesting thing about the above database is that you can click on the photo of anyone and you will get another screen showing a photo of them every year from the year they started!! Cool! Many thanks to the person who set up this database. ****************

Funny videos and photos of rikishi at play

I don't know if this has been posted before. The song he's humming is "Sukiyaki" (English title). -
Happy Birthday, Hakuho!! Today is his 35th birthday! Wishing him many more!!

You're right about that! I laughed the entire time it was going on and it went on seemingly for several minutes! I remember the last time they were in the ring together. Gyoji Konosuke could not get them to engage. They just stood there, making clawing motions at each other. I had never seen anything like it!

It's great to hear everything so clearly. Reminds me of my sumo clock! (It's like the one that's in this video).

I didn't see this posted on this thread so here is the link. I also set up a separate thread to notify anyone who is not aware that the Haru Basho Makuuchi Division will be livestreamed in less than one hour. It's counting down even as I am typing this!!

I don't know if this has been posted elsewhere, but I just noticed on Youtube that the Haru Basho Makuuchi Division is going to be livestreamed starting in less than one hour. It's doing a countdown as I type this!!

Ahokaina 36 Replied: 7 hours ago The word is "Tokuten"(特典=the direct translation is "benefit")or "Taigu (待遇=condition, treatment) , so Fan club's benefit/condition will be "会員特典” (Kaiin Tokuten) or "会員待遇” (Kaiin Taigu). Example: http://www.ootake-beya.com/supporter It's usually a calendar or newsletter and invitations for the Heya's parties and events. Correct, "Tanmono" is a roll of Kimono fabric in general, not a Sumo jargon. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is the answer to your question. I sent a message to a fellow Sumo Forum member Ahokaina and she was kind enough to answer it. This was my message to Ahokaina --- I enjoyed your post about joining a koenkai. I have a question and I was wondering if you could help me. I'm trying to find out the Japanese word for a heya thank-you gift (a bolt of yukata cloth/fabric) that is given as a GIFT to a person who gives a large amount of money to a heya. I've been told that the correct word is tanmono but I believe that that is just the word for the bolt of cloth/fabric ITSELF. Is there a special word or phrase for this TYPE OF GIFT? (given by a heya as a thank-you gift to a person who gave them a lot of money). I appreciate your help with this. Thanks! Joann

What does it mean to be the most agreeable player? Or very disagreeable?

I emailed a Japanese friend of mine to see what he has to say!

https://www.wordhippo.com/what-is/dynamic-translation/afc04189e9bdcb9cd62fb86bd1d6fbe279471bf1.html Could it be "KIJI NO BORUTO"? (And then add "OZUMO" to it?? --- I don't know Japanese so this is just a guess!). In looking up "Tanmono Kitsuke", it seems that the focus is on the art of wearing the kimono, the purpose of which is to showcase the artistic designs of the kimono and the person that did the dressing. https://www.wordhippo.com/what-is/dynamic-translation/afc04189e9bdcb9cd62fb86bd1d6fbe279471bf1.html

On Senshuraku, at the end of awarding the prizes, there is a wonderful ceremony called Teuchi-shiki. Unfortunately, it will undoubtedly be cancelled this Basho. It is a welcoming ceremony for the new Rikishi (Shin Deshi). After they file in, they form a circle on the Dohyo and drink sake. Then they and the audience clap hands (a series of 3 claps 3 times). After that, the Shin Deshi throw a Gyoji up in the air 3 times and then they all file out. Brodi Henderson (Homarenishiki) is one of the Shin Deshi in this video. He is the tallest! This is a wonderful ceremony and during a normal Basho is not to be missed. In the future, if you attend the Basho on Senshuraku (and if it's a NORMAL Basho), please don't leave right after the prizes are awarded as we saw many people do, trying to beat the crowd. You will miss this ceremony which left an indelible impression on my husband and me. You may recall that Hakuho got in trouble with the NSK during one of his Yusho interviews. He exhorted the crowd to perform the series of 3 claps 3 times. I think it might have been to honor himself!! lol

Yes!!!! You have to look up to see it as it is in the highest area of the arena. It's not a full orchestra! Here is a Youtube video. You can see the orchestra at the very beginning of the video. The National Anthem is only played on Senshuraku just before the Emperor's Cup and the other prizes are awarded.

What if confirmed cases turn up? If a rikishi is confirmed with COVID-19, the basho is cancelled forthwith. If an oyakata or a gyoji etc. is positive, they will decide on a case-by-case basis. The question of the effect of basho cancellation on ranking in the next basho is “still under debate”. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- See above, per the news conference.

Unless I'm in the dark, I don't think the NSK has made a decision about what to do regarding demotion resulting from forced kyujo due to fever. If the Rikishi are reassured that they won't be demoted if they are forced to go kyujo, that would stop them from being motivated to take temperature-lowering medication. The NSK will undoubtedly clarify this before the Basho starts. I read earlier in this thread that Hakuho is terrified of the coronavirus, and I haven't heard a peep about him training. I expect him to go kyujo before the Basho starts. Kakuryu on the other hand seems to be training hard, racking up a 50-0 win/loss record over a period of 3 days. Unless he develops a fever, I expect him to compete.

I hope more players sign up for this game --- 21 Har Har 20. It's so easy, not time-consuming and lots of fun!!
-
I would like to be able to obtain a program for this Basho. I'm sure they have been printed already. I wonder if the NSK would be willing to sell them online through the official gift shop. Or does that present a risk, too?? Or is it totally impractical? I have been collecting them since Jan 2004 and I have most of them. It would be a shame for them to end up in the trash!!

************************** SEE THE SECOND SENTENCE UNDER "COMING IN" ******************************* (I copied this information from tachiai.org) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here are some of the details from the press conference held by the NSK board. Keep in mind that they may reconsider any and all of these decisions during the coming week, and that more details will be ironed out as they come up. Coming in Only NSK employees (rikishi, gyoji, yobidashi etc.), and members of the press and media will be allowed in. The rikishi are not allowed to use public transport to get to the arena. Shuttle buses which are not used for public transport will be provided by the NSK. Rikishi will need to have their temperature measured daily three times, and if the mean temperature is above 37.5ºC, they will automatically go kyujo. Members of the press and media will also be requested to have their temperature taken at the entrance. Media interaction Normally, members of the press are allowed to enter the shitaku-beya while the rikishi have their hair re-done after bouts, to ask questions. This will not be allowed this basho. Instead, there will be a designated interview area with no direct contact between rikishi and reporters. Photographers will have to take photos at a distance. There is going to be a “sterile zone” of sorts around the dohyo. Broadcast teams will be seated in the second floor seats, or in enclosed rooms with monitors. The daily routine Chikara Mizu – “Power Water” – will be performed without water and without the rikishi touching the ladles with their lips. They will just be going through the motions. PA announcements of monoii results will still be made, for the benefit of TV. Kensho envelopes and their associated sponsorship flags have not been cancelled. They are aware that sponsors may want to cancel their pledges, and will have discussions with them if this happens. Senshuraku The san-yaku greeting on Day 1 and Day 15 usually includes a bow in all directions. This time there will only be a bow toward the main camera direction. The Emperor’s Cup, Yusho Flag, Prime Minister’s Cup and yusho certificates will be awarded. However, all the other prizes are to be cancelled pending deliberation. There will be no orchestra to play the national anthem, and it will be played from recording. The usual yusho photographs in the shitaku beya, featuring support group members and associates, will be prohibited. The yusho parade will be cancelled. What about the heya? It should be noted that the rikishi have already been warned not to go on unnecessary outings. Many heya have barred their practice grounds to spectators (customarily in non-Tokyo basho open practice sessions are common), and cancelled senshuraku parties and other fan interaction and events. There is going to be a meeting of the heya masters tomorrow, in which the procedure for temperature checking will be explained, and it’s likely that necessity of isolation of the heya members from the general public will also be stressed at that meeting.
