Day 15 lower division results

Recommended Posts

The Sandanme yusho playoff between the two do-beya rikishi Tokitenku and Toyonoshima was won by Tokitenku with a typical uchigake. Tokitenku is a tall lanky Mongolian who is really masterful at leg techniques.

Kokkai drew a bye in the first round of the Makushita playoff. The best bout was Dewanofuji against Sumanofuji, the Dewanoumi rikishi looks like one to stay in Juryo. Hochiyama was all offensive against Uchida in the second round, rewarded with a win, while Kokkai was simply stronger than Dewanofuji. In the playoff final Hochiyama again tried his luck with a strong offense, but Kokkai seemed to have learned from the loss of Uchida and simply pulled a henka with quick success.

On the promotion to Juryo side, I think that Kotonomine, Dewanofuji, Kakizoe (who won in Juryo today) and Kokkai will get the nod. This would mean three interesting shin-sekitori next basho.

Shouldn't it be JK1,2,3... instead of 9,12,19,26,34 etc.?

Lower division rikishi only wrestle seven bouts over the course of a 15 day basho. Thus, only half of them wrestle every day. Over the last few days, the number of bouts is even less as almost all the rikishi have had their 6th bouts by day 12. So the 7th bouts have to be spread out over the course of three days. As a result, some rikishi end up wrestling for the last time on day 13, two days before the end of the tournament.
