Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted October 30, 2002 Perhaps Akebono's son?
Tony 16 Posted October 31, 2002 Perhaps, it's simply Musashimaru'son, but I don't know if he has children!( and is he engaged? )
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted October 31, 2002 He isn't a father or... how is it said... romantically involved. At least not publicly. :-D
Tony 16 Posted October 31, 2002 Are married ( or engaged ) Chiyotaikai, Musoyama and Tochiazuma ?
Manekineko 200 Posted October 31, 2002 He isn't a father or... how is it said... romantically involved. At least not publicly. :-D Isn't it strange, though? I'd think women would be falling at his feet, big charmer that he is... ;) Konishiki never married, either... Talking about marriages, do we have a statistics freak in this forum who can tell us the percentage of rikishi married to older women? I have a feeling it is above-average. Talking about marriages, do we have a statistics freak in this forum who can tell us the percentage of rikishi married to older women? I have a feeling it is above-average. Most certainly Konishiki got married to a Japanese woman called SHIODA Sumika. He took his wife's family name to his legal name, SHIODA Yasokichi. They were later divorced in December 2000 eight years after the wedding. I eat some of Nekonishiki-zeki's bandwidth by including this picture from their wedding. I agree with you about the high percentage of sumo wrestlers marrying a woman older than themselves. Could this be more common in Japan on average than it is in western countries where the bride tends to be few years younger than the groom?
Amanogawa 79 Posted November 1, 2002 Are married ( or engaged ) Chiyotaikai, Musoyama and Tochiazuma ? Either of them are not married or engaged but I heard some sort of romantic rumours aobut Tochiazuma. :-)
Manekineko 200 Posted November 1, 2002 Most certainly Konishiki got married to a Japanese woman called SHIODA Sumika. And I knew that, once upon the time. Why am I too lazy to check before opening my big mouth? (I am with stupid...)
Hoshifransu 0 Posted November 12, 2002 Do you know these 8 wrestlers on these sumo cards ? Recent wrestlers or past legends ? It is said on the web site which gave this picture : "Set of 8 different SUMO WRESTLERS. Japanese Menko Cards, early 1950's. Photos are superimposed on diecut bodies. I assume that these are actual SUMO champions! Note that each face is different, and design of each costume is different. Thick cardboard. Menko playing backs. Very minor edge wear, as made - NOT from use."
Hoshifransu 0 Posted November 12, 2002 BTW, about Sumo and cards game, I've just found that one ! Someone knew it ? Did someone ever play to it ? The man who deigned the game explained everything on his website here. I have no idea if this one is still available somewhere ... Well, a sort of Trivial-Pursuit game ? I recognized Takanonami and Mitoizumi on the box. Am I right or wrong ?
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted November 12, 2002 I recognized Takanonami and Mitoizumi on the box. Am I right or wrong ? Sumo as a board game?!?! :-0 Now I've seen everything. They do look like Takanonami & Mitoizumi. That salt-throwing picture is a familiar one.
Tony 16 Posted November 12, 2002 For the eight unknow rikishi, I believe that rikishi on top right is Maedayama ( 39th yokozuna ) and the other yokozuna could be  Azumafuji ( 40th ). On top left, perhaps Tochinishiki.
Manekineko 200 Posted November 12, 2002 Sumo as a board game?!?! :-0 Now I've seen everything. I own a silly but fun sumo board game, by Hasbro. You have dohyo, 5 spaces in diameter, two *really* fat rikishi (Blue Lotus Flower and White Mount Fuji, I'm not making this up) and a set of fighting cards each. Cards are either 'attack' moves (yorikiri, yoritaoshi, oshidashi, tsuridashi, kimedashi, tsukidashi, hikkake) or 'defense' moves (uwatehineri, mamorite, tsuppari). To win, you have to push the opponent of the dohyo, using these cards. It's a fun semi-strategy game, and grossly fat Aohasubana and Hakufujisan make the fun complete. I recommend it as a perfect way to introduce younger generations to sumo... Â (Laughing...)

Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted November 12, 2002 I own a silly but fun sumo board game, by Hasbro.(...) 'defense' moves (uwatehineri, mamorite, tsuppari) This one? Mamorite? "Covering, protecting hand" in glossary of Japanese swordsmanship. I wonder how usual that word is in sumo context.
Manekineko 200 Posted November 13, 2002 Yes, that one. edit: Mamorite? Hmm, perhaps it was hard to find a kimarite describing what's in fact running away from your opponent... :)
