Who was the rikishi the most spectacular ( by style or weight ) in 1990ies ?

For me, it's Mainoumi. He was small, very fast and strong. He used incredible kimarite ( kirikaeshi, etc... ). His style was very special and uncommon. A very spectacular rikishi!

Akebono. He had such presence... I never really saw him in his prime, but what I did see was wonderful. For me he's still a class above Musa as yokozuna. 1990s are forever Ake-Taka era...

He's also very articulate when he speaks, and sounds very intelligent, which couldn't be said about either Musa or Taka...

And he had that stare that could freeze boiling water, and that tsuki-oshi that could (quoting Kintaro here) launch any opponent into low orbit of the dohyo.

He wasn't my favourite rikishi, but I respected him, and I admired his decision to retire after winning the yusho. I think he would be a great asset to Kyokai if he'd stay on as an active oyakata.

I'll have to pass on this poll, as I mentioned before I only started to really follow Ozumo since Aki 2001... but (like I also said before) I think if I could chose one or a few of these guys to still be around, I would love to see Akebono, Konishiki and Mainomi... I think they would add a great deal of (additional) interest to the current fray! :)

Cheers

For me it must be Mainoumi. (Thumbs up...)

A guy smaller than me stepped onto the dohyo, took his chances and raged like a madman against guys double or almost triple his weight and you couldn't be almost sure beforehand he would lose. I seem to recall his last eight bouts against Konishiki ended 4-4. :-0

His spell at komusubi (Aki '94, 2-13) was the briefest possible but many established maegashira never get as high up ever. Had I been him, I would have worn a brown mawashi just in case but the little Aomorian That Could never needed one.

Nagao Shuhei it must be. Born in Showa 43 works for him, too. :-P

Just look at the guy! You're quite likely to be at least as "big" as him. 171/98!

I voted for Konishiki, of course, you all know my passion for the very heavy rikishi ... though Mainoumi as Konishiki's opponent was one of the best ever clashes ...

Just imagine a bit :

96 kilos against 285 kilos ... Only Sumo enables this !

Konishiki. He made it i.e. on the cover of Aerosmith's best of "Big Ones". (Again with Mainoumi) I guess without his impressive body, Eurosport may never have startet broadcasting sumo. I admit, that I certainly was fascinated by this freakshow-effect.
