Amanogawa 79 Posted January 13, 2003 Today I read a little article on the local newspaper here ( Aomori, Japan ). It's about yokozuna in history that retired after/during Hatsu Basho. Referred yokozuna in the article: Akebono Kitanoumi Wakanohana (II) Takanosato Yoshibayama Kagamisato Chiyonoyama Asashio (IV) ( could be more.. ) And of course this scribe indicates Takanohana. :-( I heard that he had lost weight of 9 kg due to "secret keiko" prior to Hatsu Basho ( It's said that he hated to be seen do keiko in public and so did quite a lot of training while no one could see him ). But actually my impression for him on Day 1 was, "Gosh his upper body looks saggy..". He looked small rather than tight, despite that win with timely kotenage -narrowingly though... But maybe I'm wrong and he'll make another "Takanohana Legend" and will go kyujo for another couple of bashos and then will make resurrection and will go kyujo again and..... ( Don't get me wrong. I really do like Takanohana! ) ;-)
Naifuzan 1 Posted January 13, 2003 All I can say is that it's going to be really interesting to see how this basho turns out for Takanohana!
Fujisan 533 Posted January 13, 2003 Well Im not overly fond of Takanohanas attitude but you cant ignore his record. I think maybe the Sumo heirarchy have been very patient with him up to now but sooner or later its going to run out. Lets just see how he does this basho,I still think its a two horse race between Takanohana and Asashyru especially after the poor showing so far by Tochiozuma and Musoyama. Maguroyama 27 Posted January 19, 2003 Yes, to the list on the top you can also add Asahifuji, who retired 4 days into Hatsu Basho 1992. Trivia question: who was Asahifuji's final opponent on the dohyo?
Tony 16 Posted January 19, 2003 Day 3 : Asahifuji was defeated by Wakahanada ( shitatenage ) Day 4 : Kirinishiki won ( fusensho )
Jesinofuji 11 Posted January 19, 2003 Hello all, I have never been a big fan of Takanohana, I always saw him as the nemisis of the hawaian giants. However, I just don't want to see him go this way, he's just too great a Yokozuna to lose to be forced into retirement because of an injury like this. Guest Kyukenzan Posted January 19, 2003 Almost looks like he's heading for make-koshi. Now that'd be something, wouldn't it? :-
