New Year 2024 - not a happy one - quake, tsunami

Recommended Posts

Especially not for Onosato, Endo, Kagayaki, Enho, Oshoumi and the others from Ishikawa prefecture - with a strong earthquake (M 7.6) and tsunami on New Year's day at16:10h JST at the Noto peninsula - still ongoing.

The epicenter is very near the historic Rokkosaki Lighthouse on the very tip of the Noto Peninsula.  This is a lightly populated area, but remember that the actual epicenter may be 5-15 km underground.  early reports suggests that the expected tsunami was much less serious than expected. North Korea and the coast around Vladivostok may get more dangerous waves.

Update on the quake (all local times):

At 4:06 PM, with no previous activity, a 5.7 mag earthquake hit w/ epicenter 10 km deep in the hills North of Suzu City in the Noto Peninsula, w/ significant seismic effects (>2) in the Noto peninsula.

At 4:10 PM, a 7.6 mag earthquake hit w/ an epicenter on the North coast of the Noto Peninsula (at the location of the locally famous "Godzilla Rock") at "very shallow" depth.  This tremor had significant effects in an area bounded by a curve from Matsue through Osaka, Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Yokohama, Iwake, Sendai, and over through Yokote to Akita.

At 4:18 PM, a 6.1 mag earthquake hit w/ epicenter 10 km deep in Nakajima, on the Noto peninsula SW of the Noto Twin Bridge; significant seismic effects in all of Noto Peninsula, Sado Island, and the coast from Kanazawa through Toyama to Niigata.

Since then there were 8 aftershocks of at least 5.0 mag, though the dozens of aftershocks after 6 PM on the 1st have been exponentially decaying in intensity [no guarantee there won't be more severe activity!].
