dazunoyama 2 Posted November 16, 2022 Hi all, I’ll be visiting Japan next week for the 1st time in many years and of course have Kyushu on the itinerary. I have tickets for Day 11, but was curious if anyone had any tips for where to see rikishi outside of the tournament, or anywhere sumo-related that I could drop by? Thanks, Daryl

Thanks, Daryl This is exciting news. I know you're going to have a great time in Kyushu. I have a friend in Japan who's going to see the basho on Day 7. I will send him an email to see if he can offer any information or suggestions. I've never been to Kyushu myself. I am concerned about what restrictions the rikishi may be operating under. In the good old days before Covid, I had heard great things about seeing the rikishi out and about at the Kyushu basho and quite accessible. However, Covid has undoubtedly curtailed that, but to what extent I haven't heard. I'm no expert on where members' posts should be located on Sumo Forum. However, I'm thinking that you might want to move this thread to the category "Honbasho Talk" and add it to the "Kyushu 2022 Discussion (results)" thread. That's where members discuss anything related to the current basho. More people would read your posts and you might get more help. Best wishes to you on your trip. I will post again if I hear back in time from my friend in Japan. Edited November 16, 2022 by sumojoann
rhyen 1,846 Posted November 16, 2022 Kisenosato’s heya is outside Fukuoka, near Imajuku station. Just disembark and look for the flags Imajuku Stationhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/fJGGnBGCBxLmFcqw8?g_st=ic 1
rhyen 1,846 Posted November 16, 2022 Sumiyoshi shrine is where they hold the Yokozuna dohyo iri prior to the honbasho. It has close tie with sumo. I believe that Asakayama & Shikihide heya are lodging here. Sumiyoshi Jinja +81 92-291-2670https://maps.app.goo.gl/vHLB2Pc4ZF2NRhDr7?g_st=ic
sumojoann 1,268 Posted November 17, 2022 @dazunoyamaMy friend in Japan sent me some information about what to see and do while in Kyushu that was sumo-related. First, he said that the rikishi are allowed to go out this time (last year they were forbidden to), so you might see some of them in town. My friend's suggestions are both outside of Fukuoka. If you would prefer to stay closer in, @rhyen's suggestions would be better. The following is taken from his email ----- 1. Hita Shrine in Hita, Oita prefecture known as “The Shrine of Sumo” 50 miles away from Fukuoka city. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g1023432-d13472951-Reviews-Hita_Shrine-Hita_Oita_Prefecture_Kyushu.html 2. Futabayama Museum “Futaba no Sato”in Usa ( not the US), Oita prefecture 65 miles away from Fukuoka city. https://www.trip.com/travel-guide/attraction/usa/futaba-no-sato-38609592/
